Made in Abyss

Both titles feature a bespectacled female protagonist searching for someone/something from their past and smart, curious children, eager to explore the world around them. There are hints of dark secrets lurking in the Abyss and behind Dennou Coil's Augmented Reality.

Among the anime I've seen these 2 probably share the most similarity in an overarching sense. Both have rich and fantastically elaborate worldbuilding that continues to surprise the viewer with mysteries and secrets until the end. Also, the young characters and initial child-like wonder belies some rather dark and bittersweet themes. The kids in both cast are written well and realistically (which I find rare in anime). Both have distinct animation style and quality even though the art looks simplistic. And let me just emphasise again how incredibly original and imaginative they are!

Aside different settings - Dennou Coil more science fiction and Made in Abyss an engaging fantasy adventure - but both share a curious, adventurous and youthful main cast as well as the driving force is a heartily girl.
Both series let their little heroes go through life's bitterness-sweetness, with disappointments and hardships.
The story lines in both shows are well written, offering the opportunity on the one hand just to watch and enjoy or, on the other hand, to watch attentively and think about the questions and thoughts raised.
I would like recommend both anime because (IMO) both are worth your time.

Both the anime depicts the small kid investing unknown domain which contains unknown threats and lesser adult intervention.Both the anime provides us with a sense of adventure and mystery which is well maintained.

Both features a cast of young prtotags with similar age and designs investigating a mysterious area, where it features many variety of different entities and beasts together with quite a bit of action with rich worldbuilding and Scifi elements.

Both of them starts out much more like kids shows but get much deeper and more complicated with much more emotional and intense moments later on. Which I think the simpler art style and longer length helps to make it more impactful

The difference is that one does not have any blood or gore and have a smaller adventure scope,

Both Made in Abyss and To your eternity are great unique stories unique/interesting characters, full of surprises and also tragedies 

To your eternity is the saddest one but after watching season 2 you'll understand that its not always the happy part of the stories its all about how you understand that attachment leads to suffering people come and go

To your Eternity is also somewhat similar to Maquia when the promise never bloom

If you liked To Your Eternity because of the powerful moments which made you bawl your eyes out. Then Made In Abyss might just be for you.

- Both shows cover the theme of loss and learning to come in terms with the truth. 

- Both Shows explore what it truly means to be human, both literally and figuratively.

- Both shows have incredibly sad moments and characters that you easily get attatched to, before they get sent off. Made In Abyss and To Your Eternity isn't afraid to play with your heart, because the stories just goes in whatever direction is feels like going. 

Personally these are the darkest shows I've seen to date, and are the ones that have gotten me the most emotional. read more

They are both fantastic adventure anime that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. They both have amazing worldbuilding and complex characters. The main difference is that MiA is focused more on the journey while FnAE is focused more on the destination.

Both are an emotional journey, Fumetsu no Anata is a more emotional then made in abyssbut the whole journey of discovery, emotionally damaging, and fucked up moments are still there, def recommend!

Both are extremely dark series in not just its depiction violence but its depiction of a brutal unforgiving world. Frankly I think Ima, soko ni iru boku is far more extreme in how dark it is.

These series are very similar in that it thrusts very innocent children into a dangerous world, and they have to figure out how to survive on their own with very little help.  Both shows are grim and brutal, and ultimately a very worthwhile experience of drama and the realization that not everything is all fun and rosy.

Despite looking completely different, the two TV series feel very similar while watching. 
They tell a story of a kid, that has just been exposed to the dangers of the world and is trying to deal with unpleasant situations (no spoilers) that come up against it. You will be hearing them saying "It's OK, everything will be good", but you know it won't be because this world is a cruel place.
Or you're going to learn with them.

Wonderful and enigmatic animation. Mystic world with various creatures, a wondering child, adventures, great voice acting and soundtrack. At first it seems relaxing, yet later it chatches you with action and great story.

Hakumei to Mikochi addpermalink

The third entry in the Great Potato Trifectia of 2017-18 (after Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou and Made in Abyss), Hakumei to Mikochi follows a grand tradition of potato anime: A small cast of absurdly cute characters, detailed setting with plenty of exploration and beautiful scenery, combination slice-of-life and adventure elements, great music and OST, and crucially, it's super comfy. Hakumei to Mikochi may very well be the comfiest anime ever: grab a blanket & curl up.

Both shows with vast mysterious worlds unknown to our heroes that they need to explore, uncover and understand. Both sets of heroes are continually thrust into dangerous situations. Both have top tier soundtracks.

They both introduce you in a particular world without explanations, both seem quite simple later in both series there are important and dramatic plot twist. Both share similar artstyle. The main difference is the feeling of esploration that is basically absent from grimgar. Grimgar is more focused about surviving, having a quiet life and interpersonal relationships and development (not cheap romanticism but self development).

Both seems quite simple and a tranquility later in both series. They all have beautiful and gorgeous landscapes as well as a little bit guro and dramatic plot twist. Both have same art style but  Made in Abyss has a more tendency in Chibi to satisfy any age users. No exploration factor in Grimgar, it focused more on completing specific quests. Grimgartalks about suvival factors while telling us the beautiful everyday life of all characters together, a bit slice of life, on friendship and self development through main char's vision. Hope the romanticism will appear in another season of Grimgar while Made in Abyss made it really well throughout the development in friendship between Greg and Riko. read more

While the Made in Abyss has a fairly different type of plot it is another fantastic world building anime which I would highly suggest for anyone with an innate curiosity. While Magnus Bride presents a new world in the form of magic and magical creatures, Made in Abyss presents a new world in the form of a giant hole/cave in the ground which presents its own set of environments and creatures.

Made in Abyss has a very "Ghibli" feel, with an eerie feeling, and a lush, rich world and deep characters and story. More mysterious than Princess Mononoke but if you like one you should check out the other.

A little girl wants to go explore a dangerous world because she got a message from a legendary figure (in Made in Abyss its her mother), and they both travel with a partner. Both female MCs are super smart but occasionally make fatal mistakes since they are children and feeling the rush of the adventure.

Similar vibe at certain times.  Both have beautiful background art and very fitting BGM.  You get a kind of eerie feeling, but still a sense of wonder from both anime/movie.  There is also the same sense of the 'unknown' and the viewers discover the mysteries of the world alongside the younger protagonists.

What makes a good fantasy series is worldbuilding. Made in Abyss and Mushoku Tensei have distinct societies that emerged from their unique environments. Lore is an important aspect to the worldbuilding and the narrative in both series. These series are able to showcase these strengths when their main characters become adventurers. Made in the Abyss quickly begins the adventure, but relies on overt exposition throughout the series. Mushoku Tensei takes an entire cour to introduce and build a fantasy world that will only be explored in Mushoku Tensei Part 2. Both series standout when it comes to worldbuilding and grandeur compared to many fantasy adventure series.  read more

Both are fantasy and adventure anime with a strong underlying plot and world, focusing on the fantasy and mysteries of their respective worlds.
Both have outstanding storytelling and world building, along with the following similarities:
- Both have children as their protagonists
- Both of these protagonists are extremely knowledgeable and burdened relative to their age
- Both stories start because the protagonist want to help their family, who's in a dangerous and mysterious place
- Both stories have their dramatic and somber moments, while being relative lighthearted otherwise

Instead of just listing in dot points what similar, I'm just going to say one thing.

What both these stories have is a similar sense of adventure. Both have a group of characters working towards one goal. Not only are the character from both stories lovable and have in depth backstory, but the adventure it's is fascinating. The worlds they are both set in have lore that is not only explained extremely well but itself is just so damn intriguing. You know the world building is good when you as the audience can imaging thousands of other stories that can be told in the same universe.

Any way if all that sounds to vague and doesn't convince you, here's my last point.  After finishing FMA:B, it's always hard to go back to watching other shows without thinking "This new show it good but...it just didn't have that FEEL FMA:B had".
Well let me tell you...Made In Abyss has that FEEL, and you'll love it. read more

Both anime has quite a nice world setting and engaging story. Alphonse the boy in the armors and Reg  - boy Robot. Action, great animation and details, nice soundtracks, friendship and hardships of life.

both are documentary anime(kinda)
both has similar character traits and personality
kaban is same as riko, both are powerless human but quite intelligent and skillful.
serval is same as reg, both are quite strong but lack of skill and critical thinking.
at the same time:
kaban is same as reg as both of them are coward.
serval is same as riko as both of them fill with excitement.

-Both series have child protagonists that explore these areas.

-Both seem to have wholesome and light hearted moments in contrast to its eerie and dark world.

-Both have excellent animation and a more darker and grayish tone of colour when it comes to their shows colour palette. 

-Both have good OST's With Shadows House having an banger of and OP and ED.

-The world building in both are amazing. just watch it.

Very similar feel in that they both feel like you have stepped into the spirit world. With a lush world of amazing art, and incredible character and strange creatures. You definitely feel transported away in both works. Made in Abyss has a very "Ghibli" feel to it too.

Both shows include a great and original world revolving around a strange underground place made up of layers, each layer having its own ecosystem and different landscape. The main characters try to explore this place and its hidden mysteries and we are exposed to its history progressively and through the myths and legends around it. The adventure thrill you get from both shows is just very similar.

The shows differ in that Cooking and food is a main theme in Dungeon Meshi while the main theme of Made in Abyss  is Children suffering (and toilet humour). Dungeon Meshi is also more lighthearted than Made in Abyss although it does get serious and gory too. read more

Tired of watching the same cliche isekai fantasy anime with overpowered protagonists over and over again? Tegamine Bachi and Made in Abyss are two amazing fantasy anime without isekai setting. In both anime a young boy and a girl go on the adventures of their lifetimes in a beautiful, yet dark fantasy world, both underground (?). The worlds are full of mysteries which slowly unravel during the anime. Also both anime have some sad moments. Both are HIGHLY recommended to watch.

Both anime dictate the adventures of a duo as they wander across the world. Both anime contain some dark moments and explore a concept of self discovery. Katanagatari differs with some action and more dialogue as its duo search the world for the 12 deviant blade and come to new realisations. While Made in Abyss can be seen as a coming of age story for its duo as they descend into the "Abyss" and go on to face the challenges and dangers it prevails. So, if your a fan of stories about a wandering pair crossing the world and learning from the challenges they come across, you'll be sure to love both series. read more

The beautiful scenery of both of the anime settings hide how terrifying the alien-like nature of these worlds can be. Both the abyss and paradise have curses/poison that causes the loss of humanity and death. The worlds of both of these anime make you fear the unknown, but draw you in to discover the secrets behind the fantastical wilderness of their settings.

Though they look quite different, both shows have a very similar vibe. They both take place in mysterious, unique worlds where the rules are unclear and only slowly revealed. Both shows feature positive lead characters in a setting that turns out to be quite dark in nature. In the process of discovering the secrets of the world, the main characters are subjected to severe suffering - expect some serious feels in both shows. Both have strong set of side characters, though in my opinion the main draw for both are the incredibly detailed and creatively set up worlds.
The music also is quite good in both.

Incredible amounts of world building and rich lore is just one similarity Sound of the Sky and Made in Abyss share. 

They also share a post-apocalyptic setting; Sound of the Sky takes place after a great world war, and Made in Abyss happens after cataclysmic natural event. After said events occur, the world is forever changed as new civilizations and cultures arise, each with lived-in mythologies and histories. 

Thrusting cute/moe characters into this setting is another commonality.

- The protagonists are enlisted in an organization that specializes in dealing with the lovecraftian threat
- Their parent is a competent and famous top member of the organization who has neglected their child to focus on their profession
- Both feature a highly driven scientist who significantly advances humanity at the expense of minors
- It gets dark; shit hits the fan - the protagonists are strongly impacted by severe hardship
- It's a masterpiece
