Both anime feature children that have to go through some bad circumstances while they explore the world around them (In The Promised Neverland they have to, in Made in Abyss they want to).

Although they are different types of stories, the two series share an aesthetic (childish designs that contrast with their world). Both also feature superb world-building, nice art direction, and beautiful music that manage to whisk you to another world completely. So if atmospheric world-building is your jam, definitely watch both!

Both have a unique, cute artstyle that covers a dark, deep lore. Both have beautiful animation that make them stand out from the rest.

Both of them are amazing adventure series with endlessly imaginative settings. Both of them have young and naive main characters that undergo a lot of development and go through a lot of hardships on their adventure, learning things the hard way. Both of them explore the idea of downwards vertical exploration, in Made in Abyss's case, it is the main driving force behind the story and with Hunter x Hunter it is part of one of the challenges from the first part of the series. Both of them have complex themes and dark aspects to them. Both of them aren't afraid to show how cruel the world can be. Both  read more

They both have an eerie feel to them. Shinsekai Yori is a lot darker than Made in Abyss although they both have the feeling of a hidden deep story that is unraveled as you go. Both are also coming of age stories that show the world isn't as bright as you think from first impressions.

While these two anime are about two totally different things, they are also fundamentally very similar. They are both what I would call a true "adventure" anime. Where the anime is about setting off on a journey to go somewhere important to them, they are both excellent and highly regarded anime.

Both are brutally gorey. They both use great soundtracks and character motivations to tug at the heart strings. Neither series is for the faint of heart. Both anime have excellent world building and setting. As much cruelty as beauty.

Only Thing that ties these two is the main cast is being hunted by the grotesque monsters

Both large mysterious worlds with great world building for their individual settings. Both have brave warriors who scale their respective challenges (tower/abyss). In TOG they ascend up the tower facing new challenges each floor. In Made in abyss they instead descend deeper into the abyss but again similarly face new challenges every new floor.

- At a glance both seems like they came from a Pixar studio but in reality, Kaiba and Made in Abyss targets older or mature audiences - Both have world or places with specific rules on it that makes them unique and scary at times. - Excellent in world building - As each episodes goes by, secret and stuff are slowly revealed that will makes you emotional and realized how deep and meaningful both anime is - Both are short anime but tells more content than some of the multi-season anime out there

Both of them have incredibly imaginative fantasy settings. Both have stunning visual presentation and incredible landscapes and backgrounds. Both of them have a vast amount of fantastical creatures (animals, bugs, plants, etc.) Both of them have main characters that undergo a lot of development on their adventure and deal with a lot of hardships on their journey.

the atmosphere, world building and how it starts with a mysterious world that you learn more and more about as the story unfolds. Houseki, has better character development and tackles some interesting themes such as what it means to be alive and what gives us meaning, what we have to sacrifice to gain something special and so on its real beep if you are willing to look deeper.

Both Made in Abyss and To your eternity are great unique stories unique/interesting characters, full of surprises and also tragedies To your eternity is the saddest one but after watching season 2 you'll understand that its not always the happy part of the stories its all about how you understand that attachment leads to suffering people come and go To your Eternity is also somewhat similar to Maquia when the promise never bloom

Wonderful and enigmatic animation. Mystic world with various creatures, a wondering child, adventures, great voice acting and soundtrack. At first it seems relaxing, yet later it chatches you with action and great story.

The third entry in the Great Potato Trifectia of 2017-18 (after Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou and Made in Abyss), Hakumei to Mikochi follows a grand tradition of potato anime: A small cast of absurdly cute characters, detailed setting with plenty of exploration and beautiful scenery, combination slice-of-life and adventure elements, great music and OST, and crucially, it's super comfy. Hakumei to Mikochi may very well be the comfiest anime ever: grab a blanket & curl up.

Both shows with vast mysterious worlds unknown to our heroes that they need to explore, uncover and understand. Both sets of heroes are continually thrust into dangerous situations. Both have top tier soundtracks.

While the Made in Abyss has a fairly different type of plot it is another fantastic world building anime which I would highly suggest for anyone with an innate curiosity. While Magnus Bride presents a new world in the form of magic and magical creatures, Made in Abyss presents a new world in the form of a giant hole/cave in the ground which presents its own set of environments and creatures.
report Recommended by Zmaier
Made in Abyss has a very "Ghibli" feel, with an eerie feeling, and a lush, rich world and deep characters and story. More mysterious than Princess Mononoke but if you like one you should check out the other.

A little girl wants to go explore a dangerous world because she got a message from a legendary figure (in Made in Abyss its her mother), and they both travel with a partner. Both female MCs are super smart but occasionally make fatal mistakes since they are children and feeling the rush of the adventure.

Similar vibe at certain times. Both have beautiful background art and very fitting BGM. You get a kind of eerie feeling, but still a sense of wonder from both anime/movie. There is also the same sense of the 'unknown' and the viewers discover the mysteries of the world alongside the younger protagonists.

What makes a good fantasy series is worldbuilding. Made in Abyss and Mushoku Tensei have distinct societies that emerged from their unique environments. Lore is an important aspect to the worldbuilding and the narrative in both series. These series are able to showcase these strengths when their main characters become adventurers. Made in the Abyss quickly begins the adventure, but relies on overt exposition throughout the series. Mushoku Tensei takes an entire cour to introduce and build a fantasy world that will only be explored in Mushoku Tensei Part 2. Tired of watching the same cliche isekai fantasy anime with overpowered protagonists over and over again? Tegamine Bachi and Made in Abyss are two amazing fantasy anime without isekai setting. In both anime a young boy and a girl go on the adventures of their lifetimes in a beautiful, yet dark fantasy world, both underground (?). The worlds are full of mysteries which slowly unravel during the anime. Also both anime have some sad moments. Both are HIGHLY recommended to watch.

Made in Abyss and Cannon Busters both have not entirely human protagonists. Both include a colorful pallet and interesting characters. Along with soundtracks you wouldn’t usually think of when it comes to anime.

The beautiful scenery of both of the anime settings hide how terrifying the alien-like nature of these worlds can be. Both the abyss and paradise have curses/poison that causes the loss of humanity and death. The worlds of both of these anime make you fear the unknown, but draw you in to discover the secrets behind the fantastical wilderness of their settings.

Though they look quite different, both shows have a very similar vibe. They both take place in mysterious, unique worlds where the rules are unclear and only slowly revealed. Both shows feature positive lead characters in a setting that turns out to be quite dark in nature. In the process of discovering the secrets of the world, the main characters are subjected to severe suffering - expect some serious feels in both shows. Both have strong set of side characters, though in my opinion the main draw for both are the incredibly detailed and creatively set up worlds. The music also is quite good in both.

Incredible amounts of world building and rich lore is just one similarity Sound of the Sky and Made in Abyss share. They also share a post-apocalyptic setting; Sound of the Sky takes place after a great world war, and Made in Abyss happens after cataclysmic natural event. After said events occur, the world is forever changed as new civilizations and cultures arise, each with lived-in mythologies and histories. Thrusting cute/moe characters into this setting is another commonality.

Character-driven drama that showcases humans and their psychological trouble, suffering even. Yet, they still show the positive drive towards exploring the world.

- Humans are utterly dwarfed in size and power by a lovecraftian surrounding - The protagonists are enlisted in an organization that specializes in dealing with the lovecraftian threat - Their parent is a competent and famous top member of the organization who has neglected their child to focus on their profession - Both feature a highly driven scientist who significantly advances humanity at the expense of minors - It gets dark; shit hits the fan - the protagonists are strongly impacted by severe hardship - It's a masterpiece

Made in Abyss and The Mysterious Cities of Gold are adventures series involving children who embark on a journey to find answers and reach a hidden location. Despite their age, the main characters are resourceful, tenacious, and courageous. Each character contributing their skills and abilities during the journey. There are obvious differences between Made in Abyss and The Mysterious Cities of Gold, most obviously their character design, animation style, and settings (fantasy world vs historical fiction). However, if you can accept the timeless qualities of The Mysterious Cities of Gold then you will discover a hidden gem.

Made in Abyss is basically exactly the story of Gunbuster reimagined and breathed new life. Both shows deal with a young girl who is driven by the desire to find her missing/presumed-dead parent in an impossible environment. For Riko, that's to find her mother, a White Whistle, the bottom of the Abyss, but for Noriko (the similarity in their names isn't a coincidence, either), her ultimate goal is to find her father, the captain of a space battleship that was attacked by monsters. If you watched urasekai hoping for a horrifying exploration of a world that obeys different worlds then made in abyss is a great choice instead of uresekai, dealing with the tension and horror of this (imo) way better. The only thing keeping this from not being a hard horror is the setting- being a fantasy world gives a layer of seperation the horrors shown and us. Similairly Uresekai is much closer to our worlkd since the "isekai-lite" setting many episodes set up tension well although unfortunately this is poorly worked upoon.

Unlike most series from 90s this series has aged very well because even nowadays anime creators struggle to make believable worlds with characters that feel realistic.. characters that feel like your old friends. While the narratives are quite different, they are both excellent if you are looking for unexpected thrills. They both deal with slowly uncovering a secret, though Made in Abyss really takes it's time with that as it's not yet finished as of writing this. They are both quite violent, though both manage to do it in a way that feels very intentional and meaningful. They show how brutal their worlds can be. Made in Abyss is obviously much more about the adventure of it all, but both have a similar air of mystery as their stories are slowly uncovered by the characters.

The children in both stories show with the right motivations anything can be achieved when it seems hopeless with no end insight. The two narratives show an amazing heartwarming and emotional ride between the children as they set out to take on what seems impossible.

There’s really nothing similar about these anime. Settings and genres are very different. The only comparison I found was that both main heroines have a parent that they are trying to find. They don’t even know if they’re alive or dead. The missing parents of both characters left them a message that they were waiting for them in this place. Both anime are adventures leading to said place. Also, this place happens to be a very big hole in both anime’s. It’s up to a man/boy to take the woman/girl to the place where their parent is supposedly waiting for them.
