Well that was certainly unexpected! Haha.
Thanks for the unexpected reply.
It's actually funny, thematically, as I was just reading last night on why we old fucks think Morrowind is so much better than Skyrim, and a common consensus is the fact that it was a unique and alien world with a genuine feeling of "otherness" to it.
Kinda thing that made Tolkien and Lovecraft iconic, but that most genre fiction just imitates into triteness.
You're right that Iria really had that same feeling of being genuinely creative. As an introduction to the medium it probably spoiled me as to my expectations of what anime can provide.

Another strange coincidence--I see Memories in your recent updates. I only just learned of it recently after a youtube video recommended it, despite years of scouring the earth for good 90s anime. I've been sitting on it a couple weeks, waiting for a rare stress-free day to marathon all three in the hopes it'll scratch the nostalgia itch.
Feel free to share your thoughts if so inclined. No pressure, but I'm starved for intelligent discourse, haha.
I'll check for a reply in four months. :P

Good to see Iria in somebody's favorites. According to the anime page, there are only 112 of us.
My first and only anime waifu, haha. Family thought I was crazy, but 25 years later, she's still the ideal woman.

So... I'll now be going through your list looking for good OVAs/series I may have missed out on.

Thanks for the info! I look forward to watching the both of them.

Ty for accepting my FR. I like your favs - everyone in 'people' except Miyazaki have worked on at least one of the GiTS projects, so no surprises there. Could you tell me what Ga-Rei and Iria are about? I haven't really heard much of them before.
mozgow Aug 30, 2022 3:18 AM
Wow. A reply after 5 years :D

As for the anime, I've seen them all except Green Legend Ran. I might give it a chance but I'm making no promises :'-)

Hello :-)

I've seen your recommendations for Iria: Zeiram The Animation. I've already seen all of them so I'm wondering if there is anything else with such unique setting, that you've seen but haven't write the recommendation for.

Seeing your favorites has inspired me to watch Ga-Rei: Zero since Junni Kokuki, Shinsekai Yori, and Kemono no Souja Erin are all in my top 5.

Hello again, Sara! so what do you think of the 1977 Lupin series? I watched this series (I remember when this Lupin show was aired in 2003 with English dubs) and it is more canon or relevant to the manga (yes, I did read the manga) than the 1971 series (Green Jacket). Too bad the live-action movie 2 years ago was never on par with "The Secret of Mamo". You probably know this already, but Lupin III and Cowboy Bebop have several similarities or common characteristics.

Aside from anime, I like cooking, blacksmithing, playing video games, shopping and being social.
Kurt_Irving Jul 25, 2016 6:47 AM
What are your non-anime interests?
Kurt_Irving Jul 15, 2016 9:31 AM
Wolf's Rain had good voice acting, a wonderful music composer, but a mediocre director.
Kurt_Irving Jul 14, 2016 3:58 PM
I agree with you on Gate's music, but then again, A-1 Pictures lacks talented music composers like Yoko Kanno, Tsuneo Imahori or even Yuuji Oono.

Also, thank you very much for the recommendations.

Hi there! I dropped by to say that you have good taste in anime, definitely above average. Imho, if an anime has boring music, then it probably sucks. Speaking of music, what kind of music does Gate have? I'm not a big fan of contemporary Japanese music.
Coolman920 Apr 16, 2016 9:01 PM
About the gate review, did we even watch the same show?

I won't disagree that it was a Japanese military propaganda but that's like saying water is wet, everyone knows that.

But the show is depicting WAR, the people they were "slaughtering" were not just some people, but Soldiers and bandits. If you did literally any kind of research or have any kind of base knowledge, you should know about the rules of engagement:
"You have the right to use force to defend yourself against attacks or threats of attack. Hostile fire may be returned effectively and promptly to stop a hostile act"

Also you say slaughter but you really don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Look at the show again and tell me, did they EVER strike first? The first battle in Tokyo they were attacked first and were just retaliating, defending them, they went through the gate and set up a defensive position as you do in war. Then the imperial army attacked them again and again, and the slaughter you are talking about is really them defending themselves from the opposing army in war.

Then the "Rise of the Valkyrie" scene was, again, the same. Only this time they were actually defending a town from being overrun by bandits that would have most likely slaughtered (note how I use the word here cause I'm referring to bandits killing civilians) and raped all the civilian people in the town, JSDF called for backup to stop the bandits.

They never once killed a normal civilian, they always tried to save every single one. And near the end they were trying to start a peace treaty between Japan and the imperial empire.
