My scoring criteria:
Scores generated based on technical judgment first, primarily directing, narrative functionality, character development, tonal consistency, visuals, and sound design. Thematic achievement and emotional resonance tend to come second in my reviews if present at all.
Masterwork: Nothing is perfect, but there are some excellently crafted anime that I find personal significance in to the point that I would consider them subjectively perfect.
Exemplary: A show that excels in almost every way. It may have a few issues, but they are by far negated by overall greatness.
Great: A solid well rounded experience. The show may stumble along the way but not enough to hamper enjoyment.
Good: Overall a very positive experience worth watching inspite of a few noticeable flaws. It may have clear issues, but they are negated by highpoints.
Passable: A show with good aspects that are weighed down by flaws, worth watching for certain people but not everyone.
Average: A middle of the road anime that may not be bad, but could have been so much better with more time, talent, and/or budget.
Subpar: Below average, there may have been good ideas presented, but the flaws detract from the experience too much to warrant a recommendation.
Bad: There may have been good ideas along the way, but they were not successfully executed. The show may have a few worthwhile moments, but they were overshadowed by serious issues.
Abysmal: I hated watching it, a difficult experience to say the least. Although it may not have actively insulted me, I take solace in knowing I will never watch it again. Maybe braver people could find an average show in it, but I found nothing.
Traumatic: The horror shows that mentally scarred me. The shows that are so offensively bad, I want nothing more than to unsee them. Unforgettable, but in the worst way imaginable.
