Have you ever regretted a past mistake, a choice you made, a chance you never took? These anime take that regret and build a story from it. Both follow a man who is working a dead-end job, wishing things went differently. They are randomly transported into the past and given a chance to change things.

Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou.
add

Adult male protagonist lives through life lethargically. He falls in love with a woman who has her life together, great job, beautiful, and caring. He confesses to her, but she rejects him at first. He begins interacting with a mysterious teenage girl who helps him find motivation and self-confidence. Both girls are high school dropouts and ran away from home. In HigeHiro the mysterious girl moves into the main character's apartment. Whereas in Yesterday she appears at random times throughout the show. They attempt to have a realistic atmosphere—no romantic comedy hijinks, toned down color palette, and the setting is suburban Japan. Most of the anime is comprised of conversations taking place in the street, a convenience store, a cafe, or the main character's apartment. Higehiro deals with trauma and depression, but Yesterday is more about finding yourself. If you like realistic dramas with love triangles you might like both of these anime.

Dystopian mecha series following a squadron of young soldiers fighting on behalf of a government led by suspicious aristocrats. They contain death and violence in a war against inhuman monsters. Both feature a female protagonist who provides insight into the government's politics and is looked at as outsiders in both appearance and personality. The main male protagonists are stoic and respected by all of the group members, especially the women. Either series has some hijinks expected of rom-com's but juxtaposed with the military setting.

Keijo is an anime like One Punch man because they have one joke, but it is VERY funny. Butts hitting each other? Punching things? Comedy gold! Neither anime get bogged down by useless things like plot or character development.

Both are dark stories with lots of action, violence, and mature themes. They are flawed in many ways, such as animation quality, however, these flaws make both anime unintentionally comedic. If you enjoyed one, you will surely like the other! I recommend watching both.

Arte
add

In Arte, the main character is also a woman aspiring to learn a trade, painting portraits of clients. In Violet Evergarden, the main character learns the trade of writing letters for clients. As they work for their clients, they learn about them, they gain respect for them, and they gain a friend. Both are historical fiction taking place in a European setting. In either, there is a blossoming romance with someone they idolize, although in Violet Evergarden it is a side plot. Coincidentally, both shows are named after the main character.

Babylon
add

Both are politic dramas that focus on the world's response to supernatural events. The introduction of a supernatural/sci-fi person in the world presents new ideology and debates with politicians. The philosophies for the ideal societies in either show are very speculative and based on the writer's opinion rather than believable concepts rooted in reality. They are written by the same man. While each start with an intruiging premise, their endings take a pseudo-philosophical turn. Babylon ends on a more disappointing note, to say the least.

The main antagonist of In/Spectre is an enigmatic steel beam wielding maniac attacking people at random, inspiring fear and mass hysteria in people who believe she exists. She is similar to the anonymous Lil Slugger from Paranoia agent who attacks people at random with a golden bat. Both series focus on the panic, media coverage, and investigation of the unknown psychos. Paranoia Agent is more serious than In/Spectre.

Shichisei no Subaru
add

Group of six friends are separated by the death of one of them, a cute girl. The girl returns years later with no memory of dying and the friends have to come back together and work out their conflicts with one another that were caused by her death. Shichisei no Subaru takes place in a video game setting, but is otherwise a direct copy of AnoHana’s story and some of its character archetypes. The protagonist dude with almost no personality has to take care of the girl, he is in a love triangle with his childhood friend and the aforementioned cute girl. If you like AnoHana you’ll probably find this repetitive, but if you just want more of the same this has it in spades.
