In the 16th century, the city of Florence booms with cultural and creative revival in celebration of the Renaissance. Arte, a delightful young lady from an aristocratic family, dreams of being an artist and contributing to the renewal of civilization. However, with her father's death, she ends up losing the only person who believed in her passion for art. Now she is expected to marry a nobleman and live as a refined housewife without disgracing her family name. Reluctant to accept her fate, the headstrong Arte steps into the streets in search of a master artisan to take her on as an apprentice.

In her quest for a mentor, Arte has to face harsh reality when she is completely shunned for being a female artist. No one believes that women are capable of fine craftsmanship, and therefore none are willing to accept her. Luckily, a renowned artisan by the name of Leo is persuaded to take her as his disciple since he has none anyway. And thus, Arte's new life begins, far from the comfort of her noble upbringing. As an apprentice, she must earn her keep while tackling various challenges along the difficult path to becoming a full-fledged, master artisan.

If you enjoy Art and Crafts I think you'd like this Anime for seeing how it was all done in that past. I'm not sure if this view is frowned on or not here, but I'd recommend you watch at least parts of it in Dubbed. I feel that the budget that may have came with the Universal the English version is the best I've watched in ages, just from the simple part of there being Italian words thrown in from time to time. It feel's to me that a lot of attention went into making every character you meet in the show feel real, ... I don't know I just feel this show hit at the right time of my life for me. if you like the history of the time period then it's an easy recommend from me.

Arte is a charming 12-part anime series about 14-year-old Arte, who has to fight against many prejudices to fulfill her dream of becoming a painter in 16th-century Florence. The subject matter alone could lead one to dismiss or even criticize the series prematurely—but that would be unfair.

In fact, Arte is a life-affirming and loving series. Men in particular initially treat Arte with prejudice, but are won over by her strong will and determination. The series does not portray exaggerated antagonists: the men are not depicted as “pure evil,” but their rejection is limited to the attitude that “a woman cannot paint.” There are ... no sexual assaults or innuendos – which is a positive aspect of the series.

I could well imagine that it was similar in Florence at that time. The series comes across as credible and manages to combine historical atmosphere with a calm but interesting narrative style. The animation is lovingly designed, the drawings look good and fit the mood of the story.

Overall, Arte is a calm but interesting series that is told with heart and is worthwhile – precisely because it addresses a difficult topic in a respectful and positive way.

Arte ist eine nette, zwölfteilige Anime-Serie über die 14-jährige Arte, die sich im Florenz des 16. Jahrhunderts ihren Traum als Malerin gegen viele Vorurteile erkämpfen muss. Schon allein wegen des Themas könnte man die Serie vorschnell abtun oder sogar beschimpfen – aber das würde ihr nicht gerecht werden.

Tatsächlich ist Arte eine lebensbejahende und liebevolle Serie. Vor allem Männer begegnen Arte zunächst mit Vorurteilen, werden aber durch ihren starken Willen und ihre Entschlossenheit überzeugt. Die Serie zeigt dabei keine übertriebenen Gegenspieler: Die Männer werden nicht als das „pure Böse“ dargestellt, sondern ihre Ablehnung beschränkt sich auf die Haltung „Eine Frau kann doch nicht malen“. Es gibt keine sexuellen Übergriffe oder Anspielungen – das ist der Serie positiv anzurechnen.

Ich könnte mir gut vorstellen, dass es damals in Florenz ähnlich gewesen ist. Die Serie wirkt glaubwürdig und schafft es, historische Atmosphäre mit einer ruhigen, aber interessanten Erzählweise zu verbinden. Die Animation ist liebevoll gestaltet, die Zeichnungen sehen gut aus und passen zur Stimmung der Geschichte.

Insgesamt ist Arte eine ruhige, aber interessante Serie, die mit Herz erzählt wird und sich lohnt – gerade weil sie sich einem schwierigen Thema auf eine respektvolle und positive Weise widmet.

This anime is about a girl who aspires to became an artist in 16th century Italy where apparently women are not capable of drawing like Michelangelo and da Vinci and all the men are. You will see her hardships as she upgrades her level of drawing at an astonishing rate. You ll be seeing that most of the time.

Now, since the anime and main heroine share the same name of course the plot will revolve around her 99 precent of time and that is expected. The problem, at least with me, is that the main heroine is so boring and annoying most of the time ... that the whole anime gets boring too prety fast. Also,the story is too slow paced.

Its basiacally a shoujo where the main heroine can do anything if she just puts some will and a background past of loving to draw, into it.

The animation is done really well and for me that was the best part of the anime. I loved how they animated Firence, Venice, the drawings. It is animated really well. Unfortunately that is the only thing that gets a good grade from me.
