Synopsis

Best friends Yoshiki and Hikaru have been stuck together like glue for most of their lives. Living in a small village and being the only children their age, the two boys find solace in each other's company. Their friendship seems picturesque at first glance, but Yoshiki has noticed a shift in Hikaru's demeanor ever since one fateful summer.

The "Hikaru" that sits beside him now is nothing like his friend. Despite his physical appearance and memories remaining exactly the same, Yoshiki knows something is amiss and that the Hikaru he once knew is gone. When he brings this up, Hikaru partially transforms into an otherworldly being, threatening to kill Yoshiki if he cannot accept it—while also professing its love for him.

Wracked with grief and unable to let go of his best friend, Yoshiki struggles to move on with his life as he finds himself getting closer to the new Hikaru. At the same time, strange occurrences begin to plague their village, bringing unsettling chaos.

Background

Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu won the Traditional Chinese Global Special Prize at the eighth Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards in 2022. It ranked first in the 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division. In the same year, the manga was nominated for the 16th Manga Taisho Award and placed 11th in the final ranking.

The series has been published in English as The Summer Hikaru Died by Yen Press since July 18, 2023. It has also been released in German by Altraverse since January 23, 2023.

It’s one of those stories that grabs you and won’t let go, The combination of horror and deep emotional storytelling is something I hadn’t seen in a while, The setting is quiet and rural, but there’s this underlying tension that builds with every chapter. The art is stunnin there’s this perfect balance between the peaceful countryside and the growing sense of dread. It really sets the mood for the whole story.

Bumped into this and at first I just wanted to read a horror manga with 2 boys as MC hoping to ship them but it turns out this has BL/Yaoi genre mixed into this.
The horror and uncertainness genre is widely present. the exaggeration of the effects and BG noise adds the feels to it.
I am in still in the early chapters but I already like everything there is to it - Art, Story, Pacing, Telling of the everyday life, the scene.
Even when I look at each panel it feels clean. Idk but there is something in each page/panel.

The high school boy put his hand on his best friend’s bare chest. The moment and other scenes with similar dynamics are the meat of the series. I do enjoy the core relationship and the mystery - there are some chilling visuals for good spooks at times - but everything beyond that is pretty bleak. The supporting characters are uninteresting, maybe one or two exceptions, but they also felt underdeveloped, and maybe I’m just not at the right age where I can find the one-eyed enigmatic antagonist “cool”.
