Steins;Gate

Eccentric scientist Rintarou Okabe has a never-ending thirst for scientific exploration. Together with his ditzy but well-meaning friend Mayuri Shiina and his roommate Itaru Hashida, Okabe founds the Future Gadget Laboratory in the hopes of creating technological innovations that baffle the human psyche. Despite claims of grandeur, the only notable "gadget" the trio have created is a microwave that has the mystifying power to turn bananas into green goo.

However, when Okabe attends a conference on time travel, he experiences a series of strange events that lead him to believe that there is more to the "Phone Microwave" gadget than meets the eye. Apparently able to send text messages into the past using the microwave, Okabe dabbles further with the "time machine," attracting the ire and attention of the mysterious organization SERN.

Due to the novel discovery, Okabe and his friends find themselves in an ever-present danger. As he works to mitigate the damage his invention has caused to the timeline, Okabe fights a battle to not only save his loved ones but also to preserve his degrading sanity.

First off let me preface that this is the first review I've written for an anime, not because I'm new to anime, but rather because I've never really seen the need to do so. However, steins gate warrants a review. First off, I've seen this anime 3 times at the time of posting this review and each time I've enjoyed it more than the previous time. In fact one of the main reasons I'm writing this review at 5am when I have an advanced anatomy class in a few hours is because I saw the negative reviews for this show and it irked me.

First off: ... this is a time travel anime, if you are tired of time travel you might not like it. I personally think it does time travel in a unique and fun way that makes the premise much more fresh than your standard take. Also the characters are memorable and awesome. A general complaint I see is the slow pace. It's a 24 episode anime, the first 6 episodes are mostly establishing character and setting, which it does the best out of any anime I've probably ever seen. It creates a sense of realism for the characters you're observing, they aren't your usual annoying protagonists that are yelling their emotions for half the series (Erin Yager). The characters feel real and are flawed, but grow through the show.
The atmosphere of the anime is intentionally saturated and has a hue that creates a sense of dullness. This is intentional and those who can understand symbolism shouldn't have a hard time noticing that this is thematically relevant.
To summarize: Steins gate is the best physiological/sci-fi anime I've ever watched and also my favorite anime in general. I don't often give 10's to anime because they can generally improve on something (not trying to be pompous, it's just 10/10 is perfect) but I view steins gate as perfect. It has its flaws, but it's intentional for the characters and works for the plot.

Mixed Feelings

The time-travel concept seems quite legitimate, actually, with all the scientific terminology used.

One mistake I initially made, was thinking the time-travel concept used here same ass the popular concept of parallel realities or parallel worlds.
But here There is only one reality and world(parallel )don't exist simultaneously, making other world just a possibility of possible future

It even had moments like (spoiler alert!) the line, "I need a 26378x New Gen processor, it's super rare," only for someone you know to suddenly possess it 😆.

I watched this show a long time ago, back when I was just starting my anime journey, and I didn't ... delve into its complexities then. Despite that, it has secured a special place in my heart. Without needing mainstream edits to keep it in mind, the fragments of the story remain, creating a sense of total comfort and quiet reflection.
I advise others to also listen to both opening themes:
1. "Hacking to the Gate"
2. "Fatima"
Both are excellent, creating a bittersweet feeling that overflows with thoughts of that world.
I think I will definitely give it a rewatch once I reach my utopia. I believe that this time, I will gain a much better understanding of the show and feel even more deeply connected to it.

Reminder : 3rd best rated anime on MAL

…sigh…

I’ve never seen a story neglect its thematic responsibility this much wow. The themes surrounding its setting, time travel (existential/psychological implications on the characters such as questions of identity, causality, determinism, metaphysics, etc) are implied and mentioned multiple times but NEVER explored or developed. They stay in the background for no apparent reason, the author preferred to focus on the phenomenological/direct experience of the characters, the emotional plot.

This wouldn’t be a serious flaw if the story solely focused on what it wanted to do and didn’t open up this thematic territory to proceed on abandoning it, but weirdly ... it’s not the case. It’s more than a missed opportunity, it’s a serious flaw that can easily be felt throughout the show as time travel becomes only a narrative tool and loses all its meaning. 

Because of that, the main character literally only cares about his « sister » and love interest ; he doesn’t question anything, ever. He acts based on his own feelings, not even thinking once about the ethics of time travel or anything that impacts other people (his friends, the world). It’s so unnatural it hurts.

It’s alright in what it does with its plot : it tells a compelling story and delivers emotional weight through its characters. But neglecting the very themes your entire setting is about, is what completely ruins it. I can’t believe people rated it this high…people have absolutely no media literacy, Jesus christ.

Not even mentioning all the stupid niche tropes and most of the characters being flat or lacking depth. Just very incomplete writing.

PS : the first half is dogshit.

Probably the anime that deserves the most the label « overrated ».
