Synopsis

Hirasawa Yui, a young, carefree girl entering high school, has her imagination instantly captured when she sees a poster advertising the ‘Light Music Club’. Being the carefree girl that she is, she quickly signs up. However, Yui has a problem, she is unable to play an instrument.

When Yui goes to the clubroom to explain, she's greeted by the other members: Ritsu, Mio and Tsumugi. Although disheartened at Yui’s lack of musical know-how, they still try to convince her to stay to prevent the club’s disbandment. After playing Yui a short piece which re-ignites her imagination, they succeed in keeping their new member and guitarist.

Along with the tasks of school and homework, Yui begins to learn the guitar with the help of the other band members, experiencing many mishaps along the way. However, with the school-festival drawing near and Yui getting stuck with her practice, will the Light Music Club be ready in time for their debut?

The first time you pick up an instrument, you can feel the giddiness, feel the excitement, feel something click right inside of you that makes you think, "Yeah. I want to do this."

Setting aside her weapon of choice (castanets, hilariously enough), Hirasawa Yui decides to join her school's light music club and become a guitarist. There, she quickly befriends three other students who all have mostly come together to form a band, play music, and have afternoon tea. The chronicling of this venture results in an extremely cute, very fun and enjoyable anime.

K-ON! is inconsequential fluff. One might compare it to popcorn or cotton candy: a tasty treat, but if you're looking for a meal, it will leave you looking for something more substantial after it's done.

K-ON! follows the tried and true formula of cute girls doing cute things. Based on a 4-koma comic, the series is about several high school girls who form (technically join, but all the previous members graduated) a light music club and follows their activities. The music itself often takes a back seat to the antics of the girls, and audiophiles may find themselves somewhat disappointed if they go in expecting detailed read more

K-ON! and Lucky Star are both easy-going, slice-of-life anime that have practically matching character personalities. K-ON has a hint of a story-line, but ends up with the pointless and random almost every episode, just like Lucky Star. If you loved one, there is no way you'll not love the other.
Let's start with what they have in common. The two shows share a similar premise in that it's about five girls in an organized group who play music. The art style is remarkably similar, and the characters tend to have cute moe characteristics both in their aesthetic design and personality. Both shows spend much of their time using music as a central catalyst to develop the characters' personalities and interpersonal relationships, and this serves to demonstrate how powerful an impact music can have on peoples' lives.

But that's where most of the similarities end, as while both shows have a similar basic premise, they end up taking that premise in two completely different directions.

K-On! is a cheerful and lighthearted slice-of-life story about a girl who joins a club of girls aspiring to become talented rock musicians, and what music can do to touch the lives of others and truly bring people together into an inseparable family. Sora no Woto is also an occasionally lighthearted (but overall much more serious) military drama in a war-torn setting about a girl who joins an army regiment as a war bugler in hopes that she can learn the trumpet, and how the power of music can echo throughout time and transcend inexorable cultural divisions to heal a broken world devastated by endless war.

While both shows have slice-of-life scenes that go beyond the musical setting, K-On! spends much more of that time developing connections between the characters through liberal use of comedy, whereas Sora no Woto tends to delve into the intricate and sometimes dark past of many of the characters and the history of the war-ravaged world. Due to this, K-On! maintains its cheerful, lighthearted atmosphere throughout the course of the entire series as appropriate, whereas Sora no Woto can often switch--sometimes even without warning--between cheerfulness and heavy drama.

Both go highly recommended. Fans of one should definitely try the other, and non-fans can decide which ones to watch depending on whether they enjoy a relaxing high school slice-of-life (K-On!), a deep military drama (Sora no Woto), or both.
