>King of Prism in the BR top
A little surprised to see it there, then again B-Project is in the DVD top so I guess it makes sense. I wonder what the box-office was*.
*ANN says they sold over 300,000 tickets, not bad at all; would almost expect a higher BR/DVD sales number...

Also >that cd single top
AKB needs to fuck off already

And Ikimono gakari still up there in the albums, that CD is from 2010. Can't imagine the 2017 numbers now that the hiatus has been announced.

Did they reach 250K for BD/DVD sales though?

The movie could've had 250,000 copies shipped, but in terms of sold copies it was 237,883 total from the 2016 Oricon Yearly Top 30 Overall Anime Sales Ranking.

Those sales don't include merch sales which Gintama is notorious for in Japan. In addition to that, Gintama is still 30 and generally speaking that's still extremely good.

I guess it's time to watch Love Live and Osomatsu-san

Top 30 is pretty darn good imo, especially considering the peak of Gintama popularity passed over years ago...

Obviously we can't equate the price of a Limited Edition Blu-ray Box set with a CD Single and treat them as if they were the same thing, so this is just to show the general performance of the series and franchises in the rankings across different media.

Overall, I'm really happy for Monogatari, Naruto, Code Geass, Free!, Studio Ghibli and One Piece.
And I also really like the numbers in the CD Single/Album section of THE IDOLM@STER (it sold 1,146,919 units!), Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, Fairy Tail, Dragon Ball and Fate/stay night.

I see. I'm sure that if Oricon took that data into consideration the ranking would be basically the same, with the franchises probably in the same place or close to where they are now (although I'm sure one difference would be Gundam placed above Haikyuu!!, thanks to the merchandise sales). But the figures would be way higher, like you say.

Thanks for the link to the "Cool Japan" magazine. I hope they have a similar article about the data for 2015 and 2016, too.

Thank you for reposting this :) It's awesome to have concrete numbers about the profits of the biggest franchises in anime/manga.

Do you know why the list excludes merchandise sales/box office revenue/mobile game sales? Was the information not available at the time Oricon made the ranking?

Oricon does not release this sort of data on a weekly or monthly basis on Oricon Youtaiju, and we can only speculate whether they do collect this sort of data at all. However, the "Cool Japan" magazine does give data on franchises such as sales, fanbase distribution according to age groups and gender, and how much money a fan spends on a franchise on average:
http://yusaani.com/l-ra/t-ra/lovelive/2015/09/19/194023/

For example, we have data for 2014 where Gundam made 16.9 billion yen, Shingeki no Kyojin made 13 billion yen and Love Live! made 42.3 billion yen, while Oricon says 6.1435 billion yen, 11.0512 billion yen and 5.3716 billion yen respectively. It becomes fairly obvious where this huge difference in figures comes from, as there are of course other forms of revenue such as merchandise sales, mobile game sales, Box Office gross, cosplay sales, streaming services, etc.

I'm curious how 2015 turned out, but unfortunately I haven't found any Cool Japan magazine scans yet.

Garupan doing great!!!

cant wait for 2nd season...

Jan 14, 2017 11:53 PM by IZUMI64

I love μ's. I miss them so much. Thanks for the domination. T_T

Good luck to Aqours. I am really hoping for an S2. There is no reason why they won't be given a second season with the amount of the success they had. I still remember I wasn't a fan of Love Live! after season 1 but season 2 made me fall head over heels for it.

And also for Girls und Panzer. PANZER VOR!

And ARIA is so gold for managing to outsell the initial release numbers with BD-Box re-releases by a long shot showing how much it has been loved by Japan after it ended.

And I seriously need so trim down on mediocre seasonal anime out there and pick up gatari-series I have yet to watch. Not many interesting shows to watch in this season anyways apart from a few sequels.

Glad to see those Love Live sales. <3

Also wow at the gatari and Osomatsu domination as well.

Thank you for reposting this :) It's awesome to have concrete numbers about the profits of the biggest franchises in anime/manga.

Do you know why the list excludes merchandise sales/box office revenue/mobile game sales? Was the information not available at the time Oricon made the ranking?

Just reposting this from a few weeks back.

2016 Oricon Yearly Top 30 Overall Sales Ranking (2015/12/14~2016/12/11)

Note: This includes sales from Anime BD/DVD, Music BD/DVD/CD, Light Novels/Books, and Manga. This doesn't include other parts of a franchise such as mobile game sales, Box Office revenue, merchandise sales, etc. Series most affected by this are the large franchises, such as Kimi no Na wa., ONE PIECE, Gundam, Love Live!, etc.

Note2: Love Live! includes Sunshine's sales, while Idolmaster includes Cinderella Girls, Million Live, other spin-offs, and Side-M.

I bought both of those movies. I'm waiting for Kimi no Na Wa now. I wonder if that could sell a million copies or more?

I'd totally buy them too, if they came with English subs. lol
1/2... Love Love The School Idol Movie BD, like the TV series, comes with English subs! GuP does not, unfortunately but I don't need them so I'm OK without. Hopefully Kimi no Na Wa will, Garden of Words had English subs.
