Synopsis

The group of privateers known as the Blue Steel continues their mission to deliver blueprints of the Vibration Warhead Torpedo—a weapon that may turn the tides of war in their favor—to the United States. However, a new threat arises from their enemy, the overwhelming Fleet of Fog in the form of "The Student Council.," This is a group of warships composed of the remaining Mental Models—the ships' humanoid avatars—who have yet to face the unpredictable captain of the Blue Steel, Gunzou Chihaya.

As the Blue Steel gets closer to understanding the origins of the authority controlling the enemy, Iona's past starts to reveal why the war began and her reason for siding with humanity.

I have been waiting 2 years for this move to come out..and it was so freakin worth the wait :D. This an overall good conclusion for the entire series.

By far the best navy based anime series to have ever come out. i just loved it all the way. you can tell they put there heart and souls into making this movie. the action scenes alone are god like...i mean really the entire second half was one big naval warfare...it was truly amazing to watch it. It took me so long to finally give it a watch cause i so wanted it to never end. ...

Mixed Feelings

This movie is the 'true sequel' to the original anime, the problem is the anime veered away from the manga and that's this movies biggest downfall. If you haven't read the manga it's an ok movie, but even then the way the movie feels incredibly rushed and much of the suspense built up in the original anime is gone. Everything about the movie feels rushed/phoned in because this is an anime original end.

The story:

The story picks up where it left off in the DC movie, which was basically a recap of the anime series + a little bit extra at the end that ... was left out of the anime to setup for this next movie. The problem is how the characterisation in the original anime and this movie don't fit at all, many things that captured our attention in the original anime (who is gunzou's father, why did he defect to the fog?) just are not dealt with in an intelligent fashion. It feels like the movie directors just painted over everything to quickly end the series, the movie while well animated feels very by the numbers as they are forcibly ending the series, the downside is that everything the anime had built up basically comes to nothing interesting. The problem is the run time of the movie and the fact that many characters motivations are just not explained or fleshed out, we get a tonne of new characters for the fog side and a return of the main cast, there is just not enough time in this movie to really make each character shine so many characters are onscreen for a few seconds and the main focus is gunzou and iona.

The problem becomes Gunzou and iona's characters were not really dealt with well at all given the screen time they occupy. Iona's especially.

Animation:

In terms of animation, the animation is still top notch if a little over the top in that many scenes are so busy readability becomes an issue. The fights are still well animated but choreography suffers with too many ships and the 'battles' don't feel like tactical fights more then a mostly uninteresting lightshow in a battle of attrition.

Verdict:

After everything the original anime built up the movie just felt like a real rush job like the directors were hurrying to 'finish her up', and sadly that comes across in the movie. The bizarre anime original end of this movie will leave you dissatisfied and scratching your head. They Deus ex machina'd the ending. Importants events that happened before the anime you are 'exposed to' for the first time in this movie and that's a big no no. For me it just ruined the show, the same way mass effect 3's ending ruined the cool mass effects game team had built. Same thing happens with this movie sadly.

If you're easily pleased pick it up, but if you enjoyed the original anime and wanted more intrigue behind gunzou's dad and the fog, I'd recommend against watching this movie. It will just leave a bad aftertaste after all is said and done.

This movie rocked my world, in a bad way.

This is a try hard anime. Lot´s of melodramas and cringy scenes. From the series to the end of this movie.
It´s one of those simple animes but they try to make things looks awesome and magical in the end, but fails hard to deliver - actually, at this point I wasn´t caring much on what was happening.

The battle scenes became overwhelming ridiculous. Heavy battleships can submerge; submarines are heavy battleships; fast battleships are submarines; super big drilling attacks; battleships spliting their hulls in two ... so they could use "guillotine attack!" (Yes, it´s exactly what you are thinking). You know, all of the traits of each of those different battleships does not matter at all cause they can do and have the same firepower of any other different battleship. I wouldn´t mind that if this was an easy-going just-enjoy anime. But this is an anime that makes you take it to some serious level.
Iona (401) has a huge plot armor it´s painful to watch. Even when her submarine is at 1 (one) HP left, they won´t be defetead even after getting hit by a super-ultra-big railgun. Don´t take me wrong, it´s not like I wish her submarine to sink, it´s just that they really overused of her plot armor so much that started to bother me good amount.

Like, there is no tension, just a bunch of random super-powers appearing out of no where from those battleships and just accept that.

As for characters from the Fog fleet: At one second a player from the red team is now in the blue. This turned out to be so common in this anime that I am starting to wonder if I could say that it´s common me going to my kitchen getting a cup of water.

- Chihaya Gunzou just being there as boring as ever; giving obvious orders and managing to take down every ship they battle against.
- Takao as always wanting to open her legs for Chihaya Gunzou. I couldn´t stand those scenes, had to skip them all.
- 401 (Iona) being the cute innocent girl "don´t obey the admiral system!", but also being hypocritical cause she would do anything or execute any order Chihaya Gunzou gives.
- Kirishima, Haruna and Makie just appeared in this movie to complete the team in the last battle scenes, and that is it. Too bad since in the series they were the group I enjoyed most watching. They had an interesting incident in the series, and that was the best part of this anime.
- Kongou and every other new Fog character, as expected, successfully were converted and convinced to switch sides after they are defeated. Over and over the same thing would happen to each of the Fog character throughout this series.
- Hyuga nothing in special to talk about her in this movie, except that she seemed slighly different - her behavior.
- Every other character are just there.

I was okay with this anime, but this turned out to be painful to watch.
Ah! Last but not least, not enough fanservice scenes in this movie. Actually, almost zero. The saving grace was not here this time.
