The aesthetics and atmosphere in this thing are insane. Empty, depressing, suffocating, silent, yet there's something in the horizon. There's always something for you to reach for in total darkness. The narrative is very inconsistent, ranging from some of the most gripping and enthralling episodes in anime to literal fever dream levels of randomness. Yet the themes of self worth, self acceptance, self drive pull through in the end.

Whilst it falls into Pokemon 2019's unfortunate habit of essentially teleporting from place to place, losing the roadtrip vibes of earlier seasons, it is somewhat excused with the airship, and the sense of adventure is still ever present. It is also more linear and less "adventure of the week" than earlier seasons, which is to its benefit. Liko is a refreshing protagonist, and the supporting cast is strong too.

One of the first anime I watched so I don't remember much and it needs a rewatch. From what I remember, it's a decently cute tale of growing up and being yourself, themes I heavily relate to due to being borderline autistic and doing a lot of cringe LARPing during my childhood. However, it has extremely frustrating elements alongside weak and annoying side characters which heavily bog down the viewing experience, making it more of an appreciable show through hindsight rather than good entertainment, atypical of Kyoani shows.

That said, it was a great bittersweet finale with a lot of hype moments, and the action scenes were peak as expected. Can't believe it was possible to rival Fate/Zero.

Color me impressed, this show isn’t complete doo doo pee pee poo poo garbage. Rudeus is absurdly puntable, and indeed the fan service is quite tasteless. That said, Rudeus’ trauma is surprisingly well presented, and Roxy is truly a one hit wonder and I already miss her greatly. I wish the first two episodes were extended. The fan service feels more uncomfortable than sexy and it feels purposefully made to be that way. The characters don’t feel like they were made to be clearly likeable, hateable, sympathetic or respectable. The dad is a cheating scum fuck bastard but there’s so much more to him that prevents him from being labeled simply as a cheating scum fuck bastard. Characters that aren’t defined by single actions are a rarity. Roxy is an exception to all this as she’s only loveable. Even so, said spectrum is still not treated maturely as what made the dad and Rudeus scum fuck bastards is also played for comical relief half the time, with little to no consequences.
