Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo

Suletta Mercury leaves her planet and enters the Asticassia School of Technology at the behest of her mother. There, right and wrong are determined through duels between students, and the top-ranking duelist will receive Miorine Rembran as their fiancée—this prize being decided by Miorine's father.

When Guel Jeturk, the best pilot in school and Miorine's current fiancé, demands that his betrothed move in with him, Suletta disapproves, so Guel challenges her. Although she emerges as champion, Suletta is subsequently detained on suspicion of piloting a forbidden type of mobile suit—a GUND-ARM, or "Gundam"—which results in her victory being voided.

Miorine refuses to accept any more injustices and proposes another duel with even higher stakes. Now, Suletta must triumph a second time, otherwise she will be expelled and the Gundam Aerial that means so much to her will be destroyed.

This is the first gundam season I have fully finished -- not started mind you -- and I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. The relationship between Miorine and Suletta is the core focus of this season, and it delivers in developing both characters, giving entertaining and cute moments between them, and setting up both mysteries and questions for the audience to ponder for future episodes.

And of course, it's Yuri.

If you're interested in an energetic / subdued duo that gets subverted when it meets usual Gundam style conventions, then this may be your thing. I have heard criticism from other gundam fans that since ... this season focuses more on the school life of the characters, it doesn't feel "gundam" enough but personally I did not find it to be an issue.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and will certainly binge season 2.

Mixed Feelings

The Witch from Mercury certainly isn't the best anime I've ever seen, but it does a good job at setting up it's second season, and it's beautiful Gundam animations are something to behold. It may end in a way some may find underwhelming, but it assures a second season, which I think heavily entices you to continue watching. I know I'm going to! I think the sacrifices this season makes for setting up season 2 makes this one struggle to reach peak Gundam. It's no Iron-Blooded Orphans, but it's got similar charm.

The animation doesn't really shine until the fights happen. I also don't love that ... it never really feels like Suletta seriously struggles in this 12 episode journey, but we will see what happens in the second season.

If you're a Gundam fan, this one is a definite watch. If you want to get into Gundam, you should start somewhere else, like Iron-Blooded Orphans.

Gundam’s multiple timelines and universes are a major draw for fans, and it’s no surprise that shows like G Witch fail to capture the essence of what makes Gundam one of the biggest franchises of all time.For me, G Witch is one of the weakest Gundam series, and a disappointing modern iteration for two simple reasons: 1: Overreliance on clichés like "cute girls." 2: Forced yuri. In all seriousness, it’s frustrating to see two female leads reduced to predictable tropes with little depth. Suletta’s social anxiety feels exaggerated and unconvincing, making it hard to root for her. Miorine’s abrasive personality comes off as one-dimensional, lacking ... the nuance needed to make her insecurities relatable. The leads feel like archetypes rather than real, complex characters, which is a letdown in a franchise known for its rich storytelling.The yuri undertones are mishandled, feeling both subtle to the point of irrelevance and awkwardly shoehorned into the plot. Suletta and Miorine’s relationship seems like an afterthought, barely contributing to their individual growth or the story’s progression. It’s disappointing to see female protagonists and romantic dynamics that feel poorly developed and inorganic compared to the more compelling hetero relationships in other Gundam series. There’s little room for meaningful growth, and I’m not optimistic about the second cour improving things.The school setting is a tired and uninspired departure from the classic Gundam formula. The cliques and petty school politics feel like a watered-down version of the franchise’s signature political drama, lacking the depth or stakes of traditional Gundam conflicts. G Witch feels like it’s pandering to a modern audience at the expense of what made Gundam timeless. The series loses that iconic Gundam vibe and comes across as a generic anime with outdated character designs that don’t stand out.As for the Gundams themselves, the show’s lack of action is a major flaw. The few fight scenes we get are underwhelming, with clunky integration of 2D and 3D animation/CGI that feels jarring. The set pieces lack creativity, and the battles feel poorly paced and uninspired. I’m skeptical that the second cour will deliver the epic action Gundam is known for, given Sunrise’s lackluster execution so far. The sound design, while passable, is forgettable and doesn’t elevate the experience in any meaningful way.Overall, Gundam G Witch is a letdown for both Gundam veterans and newcomers. It’s hard to recommend when you need prior knowledge of the franchise to appreciate its shallow character parallels, making it a poor entry point. Those looking for well-written female characters, engaging mechs, or compelling sci-fi will be disappointed by its lack of depth and originality.
