Synopsis

Yuuta Okkotsu is haunted. Ever since his childhood friend Rika died in a traffic accident, her ghost has stuck with him. But her spirit does not appear as the sweet girl Yuuta once knew. Instead, she manifests as a monstrous and powerful entity who fiercely protects him. Unable to control Rika's violent behavior, Yuuta is helpless to stop the bloodshed that follows from her brutal vengeance. As a result, when apprehended by "Jujutsu" sorcerers—the secret guardians of the world, trained to combat forces like Rika—Yuuta wishes to be completely isolated so that no one else can get hurt.

Yet his apprehender, the master sorcerer Satoru Gojou, has different plans for him: he will join Jujutsu High School and learn to control Rika in order to help people. Now a first-year at this school, Yuuta starts to learn Jujutsu arts and combat malignant beings. Alongside his new classmates Maki Zenin, a Jujutsu weapons expert; Toge Inumaki, a spellcaster who uses his words as weapons; and Panda, a seemingly walking and talking panda bear, Yuuta begins to find his place in the world and, for once, to feel comfortable with his abilities. However, as his training progresses, Yuuta comes to learn that the dangers of the Jujutsu world go far beyond that of wicked spirits.

The man is fighting for his loved person. He keeps his childhood promise with her in his heart and gets stronger. "I want to protect everyone." A white hat is never fragile. Even if he feels like he is going to get discouraged, the voice at that time helps him. No matter how ugly-looking, the shape of love is immutable. It's a road to the swordsman.

Jujutsu Kaisen became one of the most popular shounen series in recent years. I like this series from a TV anime adaptation. This movie is a significant prequel. Not just complement. The strong bonds of Yuuta Okkotsu and Rika Orimoto will attract you. Blinding darkness illuminates their future. They've kept a long relationship but Yuuta lost Rika due to an event. He decided to enter Curse Technical School to bring her back to life. The story starts from there.

Yuuta at first is timorous and unreliable but he is drawing out the potential through the power of Rika who became a ghost. He seems to have only negative elements though, his companions have a big influence on him. Gojou, Maki, Toge, Panda. Their existence strengthens Yuuta mentally. Some scenes relating to Maki and Toge have remarkable points. Maki is a proud and strong-willed girl. Yuuta respects Maki's way of life among the members and it changes him in the right direction. The weight of helping people. Yuuta remembers it and fights enemies. Interaction with Toge further accelerates the feeling. Yuuta indirectly learns from Toge the power to understand people and be considerate of them. It means to gain the trust of someone.

Yuuta is relied on by Gojou and Panda as well as Maki and Toge. Especially Gojou. Thanks to him, Yuuta can live. If you like Gojou, You can be sure that his sense of humanity is not a lie. Because Gojou is always reassuring. His insight and curse abilities can't be overestimated as same as the original series. You're gonna like his depictions in the prequel. Getou is the closest villain to such as Gojou. The fierce battle against Getou is the highlight of this movie. As I wrote before, the process leading up to there is important and indispensable. I'm admiring Yuuta's brave figure since I read the manga. Because he wants to break Rika's curse by his own will. He looks like that boy coupled with the voice but a bit different. Yuuta is more emotional and straightforward. He can be either kind or ruthless. The existence of Rika controls the dangerous balance well. A power that equals a life-saving sword. It's up to the original Rika's imagination whether Yuuta masters it. Their relationship is very simple but profound. Only love.

The anime adaptation is very true to the original. There are some additional scenes (opening, part of characters from the original series, post-credits) but feel comfortable with them. Proper composition. Moreover, the production value is high. MAPPA did a good job for this movie enough. The visual quality is no less beautiful and well-made than the original series. Every fight scene is noticeable. Those don't cheat at speed. The camerawork, directions, and effects are really amazing. To be honest, breathtaking and "re" watchable. It's the best part of this series second to the characters. The movie-specific animation makes it better. You'll enjoy this action-packed style. I appreciate MAPPA.

The art style is also alive and well. Yuuta's hairstyle changed a bit from the original but not bad. Gojou's eyes are powerful as usual. The voice acting including Yuuta is very impressive. Initially, I worried whether Megumi Ogata's voice fits Yuuta for some reason. But actually, there was nothing to worry about that. Well-cast role. I know her great achievements since before. I guess studying for a role was very hard. She deserves praise. Music and King Gnu's theme songs are mellifluous. I like how King Gnu's capture against the work. In other words, the lyrics are fitting. Their excellent music-making never having lost Eve.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a light of hope. Even if the past can't be changed, the future can be changed. The manga was already caught my heart but the anime adaptation is beyond that. You can understand what you can do when you believe that you can fulfill that wish. Yuuta also has that. His strong belief resonated with me. There are some wonderful messages. If possible, I recommend watching this movie to you after reading the manga. No problem if you watch this movie first. Because a certain quote symbolizes this prequel.

In 2019, Kimetsu no Yaiba took the anime world by storm and then followed up with a movie in late 2020 that smashed all box office records to become the top grossing movie of all time in Japan. Jujutsu Kaisen seems to be following the same strategy, having been arguably the most popular anime series released in 2020, and judging by how absolutely packed the movie theater was, it will probably be another record-setting anime film in terms of financial success. However, how is the movie in terms of actual content? Pretty damn good I must say, even coming from someone who enjoyed the anime but did not buy into the hype train at all.

The story is a prequel to the series, and stars previously unseen character Yuta. This movie shows the incident with the mysterious villain Getou, which was only mentioned in passing/hinted at in the series, and finally fleshes Getou out as a complex character with interesting motives and backstory. The story itself is rather straightforward and nothing to write home about, but serves its job well of further world-building and character introduction.

The prequel sees the return of series favorite Gojou-sensei, with the sempai trio Maki, Panda, and Inumaki also getting ample screen time. It showcases their characters a bit more than the original series did, which was a very welcome usage of running time. Nanami and the Kyoto school team also make an appearance, and although they do not have an influence on the story, their fight scenes/cameo were much appreciated.

My one gripe with the characters is with Yuta, the movie’s main protagonist. Personality-wise, he is like a slightly less annoying version of Shinji from Evangelion. His powers are poorly-defined and kind of overpowered, a deviation from the “technique-based” fighting styles that all other characters are introduced to have in the series. His backstory is also very cookie-cutter generic for anime protagonists. However, he did not annoy me as much as Shinji does and I grew to like him by the end, so this was not a huge complaint.

As expected of Mappa, one of the few studios that can rival the likes of Ufotable and KyoAni in terms of animation quality, the animation here was top-notch. All of the fight scenes (half the reason I went to see it on opening day) were crisp and an absolute pleasure to look at. There were some awkward CGI-assisted shots and far-away shots that did not look as good as the rest of the movie, but they were sufficiently few and far between that I was not bothered.

The soundtrack for the film was great, but nothing outstanding or particularly memorable, working well as background music. The ending songs were kind of generic and not my cup of tea, but I might grow to like them with repeat listens.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this movie and really liking the plot threads it sets up that should be further explored in future seasons, and it got me excited for the future of this franchise.

Just watched it on the release day

Story - Even though it is a simple story about Yuta when he was a first year student , they did an outstanding job making it very entertaining, and end the story with a good conclusion.

Art - As expected from MAPPA, amazing animation throughout the whole course of the movie. The fight scenes are VERY GOOD, especially the fight between Yuta and Geto.

Sound - The music is OUTSTANDING it fits every scene in the movie.

I love Jujutsu Kaisen but I fucking hated watching this movie in theaters. Perhaps my intense hatred is due to the high expectations I had before going in after seeing the reviews, hype and remembering how great the show was but I do know for sure I don't think the movie is very good at all.
