After The Reflection, some of the people in all parts of the world are discovered with super powers. Some become heroes, and others villains. How did the Reflection happen? What was the cause of it? With many unsolved mysteries, the world is led into turmoil.
This project is supported by Stan Lee (producer, voice), yes the American comics creator of known characters from Marvel. ¿Do you think that a person like him will support a "piece of garbage"? Stan Lee will appear here, no I am not kidding and isn't a Marvel cameo.
The Reflection isn't an animation for everyone. Your first impression will be the ART. A lot of persons will consider it awful, wrong, incorrect, a total waste, something that will burn your eyes. However, the show uses a technique that tries to recreate the American comic and animation from the 60 - 80s, In other words, an
American Comic in Motion. The show succeeded in some way (I consider this show as an experimental animation) but at expenses of motion, smoothness, palette design, fluid narrative, animation. If you are seeking a show that uses "conventional" animation, "classical" art palettes and "traditional" smoothness, better that you skip this show or you are going to be very disappointed.
Most of us were waiting to see an ANIME, but this show isn't. I could say the biggest failure was mixing traditional American comic techniques with some Anime techniques. The result is an awful, untasteful combination called the Reflection. However, even if it fails to deliver a good mix between Anime and American comic, the show maintains the traditional idea from an American comic as we can notice in the story.
The American superhero story, I remember why I decided to stop reading - watching them, even movies. The same repetition after repetition, the same argument and the same characters with the same development and now we can see the same argument in the Reflection.
The typical American comic story, a person or a group of individuals gained powers from a source, in this case, the reflection event. To add spice to the story, we have the typical American super hero comic fight between heroes and villains. In the beginning, this story is a bit unpleasant, but after some episodes, the story starts improving a bit.
I can't say anything about the characters, but they are just a copy of American comics characters with some differences. Ironic as it seems, this world has several "ideas" with lots of similarities with those from Lee's worlds, I wonder why. For example Exon. If he touches his opponent's body for three seconds he can copy their power, ¿where did I watch that? Ohh yes, Marvel comics. So far there is only one character that could have a "healthy" development and is called Eleanor.
Lastly, I decided to watch the series until the end, but the performance will "REFLECT" the final score. So far is very average.
I think this anime really deserve better scoring than current measly 4.77.
Sound: The OST and the main song is hands down amazing and totally fitting the anime.
Art: I don't read comic books or anything like that but the art style is perfect for this kind of anime.
Story: A weak point... there is so many other stuff with superhero themes it's hard to see anything really new.
Characters: There is some great dynamic and banter between main cast but we don't really get to know them very well, at least not yet. But I certainly prefer them over any movie hero I saw till now.
I like how
laid back it all seems despite seriousness of the situations (Mushishi director's influence no doubt).
Whoever thought that involving Stan lee with Anime was a good Idea must have been Drunk when he got that Idea... is not that the Idea of the anime itself is bad, It might have worked a Decade or two ago. I've heard people saying that this anime is supposed to resemble the old super heroes cartoons with comic style... but lets be serious, I've seen better old super heroes cartoons with better animation, animation style and a better plot. so for this anime "The Reflection" Either you overpraise it (just because Stan Lee), or you assume reality. that doesn't mean that this is utter
garbage, it might get better. but that won't mean big difference. there is a reason why this show has a 4.8 score here on MAL. There might be Spoilers Ahead
TL;DR: Overall Section
The idea of a weird Atmospheric phenomenon is not bad, at least not at all, its an interesting plot device for the power source of this anime. yet its cause is Similar to that of Charlotte, where an Asteroid was the one that caused teens and below to have superpowers. on the Reflection, it looks like a laser shower falling from the sky. so where does it drop a lot? well aside from some asspulls that I will talk about later, the story just doesn't make that much sense or atleast is way too poor for a 2017 Anime... "Heroes" vs "Villains" having ragdoll fights in the sky with a great lack of physics. as for where the plot is heading, I'm not really sure about where is it heading. It could have been fun a long time ago, but compared to animes that has a different artstyle/plot from the usual in Anime, it lacks a lot.
So I said "Ragdoll Fights" and "Lack of Physics" before... Wanna know why? well First, I'll say that this anime has an unique Art style, but it lacks a lot on the animation department, there are a lot of inconsistencies on the frames, for example when you get a lot of still frames, or really bad choreography on fights that lacks a lot on physics (for adding an example, there is a scene where "I-guy" throws a Sewer Cover like it was a Frisbee, you can clearly see the lack of detail on that scene, which looks like it was thrown with Baby Strenght and knocks out a Frog guy (on my times, heroes like Superman launched a lot of deadly punches on to his enemies, without even killing them, I can't believe someone told me that what I saw, had an Excuse like "if they launched that with full force, that could have killed him" Give me a break! they clearly survived of being crashed against a building) that aside, there are a lot of scenes that lacks physics and the impact that scenes gives will only make you feel really disappointed. Still shots will not work if what you see is a faceless character on screen lacking a lot of details, if they were going to put a still image, they could have done better and put more detail on it. (I'll give some points on the first episode for adding those "Boom" effects on the buildings)
My brother once told me that if you abuse a LOT of the same freaking soundtrack, it will get old really fast. And that means lack of creativity... I'm talking about "Sky show" song or whatever its called that sounds always when I-guy is on screen, the song is already atrocious and lets not talk about how lazy the voice acting is, that also lacks depth on scenes...
Just by hearing the name of the "Blue Superman" you'll know how bad of a character he is. aside of how Ridiculous "I-Guy" sounds, he is your superstar that lacks the essence of Heroism, he would be an Easy target for Hero Killer Stain from My Hero Academia (or at least, one of the reasons of why he decided to be an... Anti Hero?) . the other characters from the Main Cast aren't that interesting, we have a Deadpool Spiderman that for some reason has a lot of powers on himself (maybe he absorbs others powers by just staring at them, guess the goddess of luck favored Deadpool) on my POV he is mostly a character that possibly won't develop and its REALLY uninteresting. then we have Eleanor, a girl that has the power of teleportation (her power is quite dull animation wise) he is a girl affected by the Reflection, and she hasn't total control of his powers (at leasts that was what "DeadXPoolMan" told her... btw, remember this) so we will assume that the powers that are obtained by the reflection are quite hard to use... and here is where a major asspull comes, we have a wheel chair girl that goes by the name of Lisa. she got affected by the reflection, but she weren't aware of her power but for an odd reason, she got full control of her power like she have used that naturally since her birth... so they basically trash the idea that the reflected need to develop well their powers in order to master them, or maybe this means that Eleanor have a inside plot device that makes her quite below average on power ussing. then we have the "villains" which lacks a lot and are pretty boring.
A really simple way to explain enjoyment on this anime is to expect something from it... like it getting bad so we can laugh at it, or expecting it to get better so it becomes more interesting so you can shit on the hater's face. otherwise it would be a nice idea to skip this anime for now
Interesting Idea, Interesting Art, Interesting setting, Bad execution, Dull characters, Animation Inconsistencies, aspulls, Stan Lee didn't save Anime, Trigger did...
This show is a clusterfuck of Stan Lee's favorite heroes. Therefore the story isn't that important but ill talk about it anyway. In this world a weird gas that resembles a nuclear fallout swept over the city and the people the people that survived the attack got super powers and are called the reflected. The story treats it kinda like X-men with the mutant powers thing. our main character is a girl that doesn't know how to control her powers and she goes to a hero in hopes to learn a little more a criminal plot unfolds around her. that's as much as I
can say without spoiling too much. one more big thing is sometimes the writers will make jump-cut without enough explanation as to why and it takes you out the scene. They do it for a key point which is mostly why I'm mentioning otherwise I would give it a pass.
The art is drawn like a comic book which is very dangerous if not done correctly. this show fails to do it right of course. the animation is a little bottom of the barrel IMO as things are relatively lackluster in direction and choreography kinda like they are trying to play it safe. it comes out kinda janky and slow, it turns off most viewers.
The music is lacking, but not in quality, quantity. they abuse a song which is based out the 80's in combat and it gets old fast. there's a reason they use it so much and they mention why but that doesn't make any better the other songs are not going to stand out much when you hear them because your mind is stuck on this one.
The characters as straight out of stan's library. I mean every design can be connected to another hero in some shape or form and they don't even try to hide some of them by giving them similar names. I-Guy specifically (Iron man) has the same suit when it comes to powers and the design is similar to one from Tiger and Bunny one of the most if not the most popular anime in japan right now. we also have Exon how can copy peoples powers who uses a Spiderman like grappling hook or whatever you want to call it as well as the fact he looks a lot like Robin from teen titans and some other heroes. Those are the only heroes you need worry about for this story but there are others as well as villains which also have designs similar to other characters. our main character can teleport but they are inconsistent about the distance. it seems like they use the fact she can't control her powers more like a crutch for this more than story tool. she is a normal girl so ill give a pass on her design for now.
overall, Stan made a lot of dangerous calls on this and it didn't turn out well. if you love is old comics at least check it out otherwise stay far away from this. there are a lot of flaws you can pick out in this with little excuses for it. they try to write around the flaws and I commend them for that but that isn't enough to make a show go well with critics. even the best writers can't save a show like this in a mainstream audience. it has the makings for a cult classic tho. 3 or 4/10 for a critics review but i am enjoying it as I do like old comics and bump it up to a 5 or 6 because of the effort put it and how well the show handles itself despite its faults.
