I'm going to make it short. This special episode is an alternative version of epilogue of episode 25 in FSN [UBW] (Good Ending in UBW route of the VN) and must be seen AFTER episode 25 of UBW. There is nothing really to speak on, but if you really like Saber, this is a must-watch. However, unlike ep25, this ending doesn't bring any new additional scenes, it just faithfully adapts Good End from the VN. If you wanted to see it animated, go and watch it.
Overall, this special is a good fan-servicey special for Saber fans and a decent snack for all HF waiters. And it gives us hope that we can actually see Sparks Liner High and Normal End from Heaven's Feel animated, when HF gets released on BD.
Since it doesn't bring anything new and I'm not that much fan of Saber and the Good End itself (True End feels much more logical), I rate it 5/10, but it's not to be taken seriously.read more
Explanation of this ova in relation to the visual novel: (spoilers of this ending and a bit of true ending to be able to understand it)
We all know that in the true ending Rin stares as saber disappears (no running from Rin). After a while Saber starts her speech: Basically congratulations, I would have really liked to stay but Shiro has you (it is sooo clear she can be easily convinced, but Rin didn't do anything). In this ending it is also clear Rin is head over heels for Shirou and realises he doesn't care that much for saber.
Good ending: Rin runs like berserker to save saber (it's just a few meters though). Now the big question, Why did Rin saver her?
She knows in this ending Shirou would almost die of sorrow if saber goes (this is based on the visual novel. In the true ending the main character just gives love points to Rin while in this good ending Shirou gives them to both Rin and saber. The reason why Rin keeps insisting saber is her familiar and hers would therefore be because:
- She doesn't want them to get romantically attached (in the VN she tells them not to flirt), she just wants saber to watch over him (so he doesn't become archer) and support him and make him happy.
- Imagine Rin gives saber back. Well, this would be a threesome whether they want it or not. Rin not having a link with saber = having sex with her, the same goes for Shirou. Now, with the link Shirou and Rin can become a couple and mana be supplied constantly without sex.
Something quite relevant as well is that Rin either subsconciously or conciously chooses Archer (Shirou) over saber. She asks archer to remain in this world and cries when he doesn't accept. This happens in both the good and true ending in the visual novel, this ova just doesn't repeat that scene (right before the good ending would come archer's scene).Think that if archer had accepted Rin's proposal both the true and happy endings would be the same (Rin - Shirou - Shirou). I do believe in the good ending Rin runs to save saber because of how much Shirou cares for her (at least 4 points given to her).
Even so by asking archer to stay afterwards saber would have left this world had archer accepted (there's not enough mana for both of them and Rin knows it. She also knows saber isn't selfish to stay that way, by asking archer she's in a way betraying saber, that's why she thinks "I know I shouldn't ask" (but she does ask...) and archer says "I do not know if you will keep your contract with saber, but I am nor qualified for that").
These sentences are taken from the VN.
I hope you anime only guys understand better what happened now.
Overall it is a very good OVA. Saber doesn't die, what else in needed? =Pread more
Very good OVA but at the same time difficult to understand. Having read the visual novels from the Nasuverse that affect this universe[FSN; Fate Hollow Ataraxia] I'm gonna try my best to explain the situation.
Well, we see Rin saves saber in this ending. The reason behind it would be the point system in the original visual novel. In this ending Shirou gives love points to both Rin and Saber, expressing a lot of affection towards Saber [this is something Rin notices and uses expressions in the VN like "you are too kind to saber" or "you want her to stay, so it's alright"]
In the end this is an eroge game, so giving points to both girls [instead of just Rin] makes the harem ending for Shirou.
Some of the reasons why I believe this are:
- Saber: Shirou and Rin love each other so whoever saber likes will be the deciding factor. In a harem several people have feelings for someone. Who does saber like?
There is one whole route dedicated to the love between Shirou and Arturia. In "the last episode" in the visual novel, which wasnt animated, we see how much Saber loves Shirou [I can't say more because of spoilers]
In the UBW anime Rin says saber is way to dedicated to Shirou. In episode 23 saber says "Shirou, you are still my master", in episode 24 before dying saber says "I am happy because Shirou has Rin". In the V.N saber flirts with Shirou as Rin states and she says she stays just for him.
In the good ending the bond between Shirou and saber is even stronger than that of the true ending, strong enough for saber to kill Rin while destroying the Grail without the need of a command seal, although that didn't happen as Archer saved Rin in the last second.
So we have a saber class servant that willingly states "Shirou, you are still my master" (episode 23) while having another master, she willingly almost kills her real master and in the visual novel after Rin saves her she flirts with her master's boyfriend.
In Fate Hollow Ataraxia (the sequel to the VN) eclipse scenes we are shown that saber is having sex with Shirou. In the game saber comes from the UBW good ending universe. Her eclipse scene is her going inside the bathroom while Shirou is bathing. Shirou tells her to wait but she tells him not to worry, she undresses and bathes with him. After a while Shirou gets turned on and he says he's unable to resist his instincts, so he they have sex. Saber was very happy Shirou would allow her to make love to him.
- Saber is Rin's servant: If Rin had set saber free or given her back to Shirou, Rin would have had to have sex with Saber out of necessity to give her mana (as there would be no master- servant relationship that would be the only way). Now, since saber and Rin maintained their pact Rin has no need to have sex with her (as she supplies mana constantly thanks to her immense magical knowledge) and it would be Shirou that comes to be in a enviable position as his “seed” would be needed to maintain the girls (either through Rin or directly to saber if that wasn’t enough).
The situation between Rin and Saber is the same one as Sakura-Rider in Heaven's Feel true ending and they don't have sex (because it's not necessary thanks to the master-servant link).
- Rin loves Shirou a lot: In Fate Hollow Ataraxia (sequel to the VN) she just wants to be a couple with Shirou [like when Rin invites Shirou to go to her private pool in her house. Shirou says he's gonna go tell Saber and Rin gets super mad. She tells him it's a couple's date, so just the 2 of them will go]. In the anime [episode 11] all 3 of them go out together, but that wasn't even close to a real date. Rin loves Sakura very much [you how much if you read Heaven's Feel] and at that time Rin still believed he was gonna end up with Sakura. Later in the VN Shirou confesses his love for Rin, but before that she barely even considered going out with him.
Fate Hollow Ataraxia also shows a glimpse of future Rin. She's no longer tsundere, she's just lovestruck. At some point future Rin says: Rather than becoming happy together, I will, with no questions asked, and more than anyone else, give him happiness. It also raises more reasons for Rin to save Saber in the good ending Sunny Days. In the VN in order to reach that ending Shirou has to give Saber at least 4 points, which means he cares about her a lot more than in the true ending. In the VN Rin says to Shirou "you are too kind to Saber" and in the good ending she says "you want her to stay, so it's alright". She also says both of them will be training Shirou, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched to think Shirou's happiness plays the big role in Rin saving Saber in the good ending.
It's been very difficult to explain the situation without spoiling anything [All I mentioned were irrelevant quotes to the plot taken from the anime and quotes from the visual novel thant don't spoil anything]. If I could explain Heaven's Feel and Fate Hollow Ataraxia and other stuff I would get way more arguments but this should be enough to get the general picture.
First of, if you're expecting some love-dovey moments of Rin and Shirou then you better throw that expectation in the trash can. The OVA here is only a quick ten minute scene a day(s) after the final battle of Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Words.
The story wasn't bad nor was it exquisite. Personally, I think that this was the best choice route for what happened to Saber. According the Episode 25 of Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Words, Saber disappeared after using the 'excalibur' move but in this OVA, the author decided to press ctrl + Z to Saber's disappearance, or in other words, a happy ending.
There has been no change to the art in Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Words and its OVA here. Like usual, the art is clean and delivers the feels of the anime at its finest.
Unfortunately, there isn't an OP in this OVA but I enjoyed the bgm quite a lot here. It was a calm piece that kept the audience, especially myself, relax as we watch this heart-warming episode. However, that was all there was in the episode. Other than that, the ending was simply a long version of the relax music.
Since it's just a short 10-minute episode we can't expect much of a character development. The only characters in this episode was Rin, Shirou, and Saber. Although it wasn't much of a grand appearance, but Saber's "un-disappearance" was quite a big impact of the story and pretty much the best part of the character's category.
Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Words OVA, Sunny Day made my day with a nice heart-warming episode and left me thinking that they should've just done this in Episode 25 of the original series but oh well, it was good~
In my utmost honest opinion, this OVA wasn't dazzling but it is also not a waste of time either. I would definitely recommend it to all Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Words fans because this will definitely make your day with a nice and warm episode. Hopefully this helped you~read more
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks is an intense anime filled with action, moral conflict, and exciting characters. It may be a fantastical show, but the Servants a.k.a. "Heroic Spirits" are actually based on our own history and mythology!
