Synopsis

Gabi Braun and Falco Grice have been training their entire lives to inherit one of the seven Titans under Marley's control and aid their nation in eradicating the Eldians on Paradis. However, just as all seems well for the two cadets, their peace is suddenly shaken by the arrival of Eren Yeager and the remaining members of the Survey Corps.

Having finally reached the Yeager family basement and learned about the dark history surrounding the Titans, the Survey Corps has at long last found the answer they so desperately fought to uncover. With the truth now in their hands, the group set out for the world beyond the walls.

In Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season, two utterly different worlds collide as each party pursues its own agenda in the long-awaited conclusion to Paradis' fight for freedom.

aot has managed to surprize me with how the plot and story keeps changing every season and it feeling so natural and earned. This season in particular has amazed me like no other anime, manga or movies ever. Everything is so unpredictable and thrilling and score was especially good too. this season's opening is one of my fav openings ever. New characters introduced in this season are very well written. Mixed Feelings

Attack on Titan, one of the anime series to become the most popular since it started airing. Fight and survive, that's all it used to be about. It created a captivating story because life was so short and if you screwed up, you ended yours. With Attack on Titan: Final Season airing, it does feel like we lose a bit of a that. I'll assume you've seen the prequel seasons for the purposes of this review.

Story: Attack on Titan: Final Season skips us ahead multiple years after Eren and friends finally reached the wide open ocean following the end of the ... third season. Right away, we're tossed into a completely different setting with brand new characters, fighting a war. This new setting is called Marley and freedom seems to be what they're fighting for. Freedom is a central theme in the entire series and that seems to hold true here. As the plot carries on within Marley, we learn more and more about their history, as well as the history of many of the titans. This seeks to answer where they came from, what they're for - everything. As the series carries it, our characters that we've come to know and love (or hate, depending on your viewpoint) finally get mixed into the story and that's really where our plot takes off. Or it tries to anyway.

This series does start off notoriously slow, in part because they need to go over so much of the political and historical landscape of Marley. This is never really a series killer, as Demon Slayer's Entertainment District proved, so believe me when I say it's worth sticking around past that. However, if you're uninterested in the aforementioned Marley country as it stands, you're going to get bored very quickly. It's not the biggest deal if you're not into that though. You could easily watch this season, and get by mostly fine with a minimal understanding of who is fighting who, and why.

The first fight within this series centres around the Warhammer Titan, one of the seven special titans that are seen in this series. We already know a few others - Armoured, Colossal, etc. This fight is a strong reminder as to why most people love Attack on Titan. It's fun to watch, there's a ton going on and we get to see all the special abilities of our titans at full force. Once those episodes finally finish, we do take a pretty large break from the action and most of the rest of the series jumps to a more passive approach. There are a few action sequences, but not nearly enough within the sixteen episode season.

One of the serious problems that I felt almost immediately was finding the answer to: Why do we care so much about Marley? Yes, there is a great amount of detail given with their past as it pertains to the titans, but if that's honestly the reason why we needed to go into this gigantic info dump, then it probably wasn't worth it. I thought the historical and political stuff was done about as well as it could have, but it's not my thing, and it ran far too long. This also includes characters that really didn't push the series in the right way. So while the series goes for a macro-level storytelling and worldbuilding, it really doesn't pay off. (6/10)

Characters: As mentioned before, this season brings in some new characters from the nation of Marley. We've already gone over how the detail on the past was a problem, but present doesn't stand much ground to be better due to the lackluster characters. Outside of some characters that we already knew about, the series brings in characters like Gabi, Colt, Falco, Theo, Pieck, Floch and Yelena. The latter three had some moments where their personality shone, but in general, they were a really weak group. No, the story doesn't do a good job at giving them room to shine, but there's just no room to care about them.

As mentioned before, our original Attack on Titan cast mostly all return. Levi's still amazing at what he does, Armin's grown into a more mature character, Mikasa's a strong scout and the list goes on. Zeke takes a fairly large role in this series and he might be one of the few characters for Marley that I didn't mind. However, two characters that I really didn't like were Eren and Historia. Eren's the obvious one because his character took a complete 180 and his ways around what he's doing now really doesn't make a ton of sense. Sure, there's still plenty of series left, but he's really unlikable now after achieving so much in the previous three seasons. Historia is another character that matured greatly in the past and it really feels like they threw away her character for no real reason. After taking a 180 in the opposite direction than Eren, I was pretty disappointed with how they left her. (6/10)

Art: The studio handling Attack on Titan has been passed on from Wit Studio to MAPPA, and I'm really not a fan of this change. Wit wasn't on the same level as ufotable, but they still produced a pretty amazing looking series in the past. MAPPA does not come close to that level of detail. I mentioned the Warhammer Titan fight and it looked really good - but the rest of the series just feels a level below what I expected. They very obviously tried to preserve as much of the original as possible, but there are a lot of moments where you can see the difference, especially with character models. It's passable, but I was expecting better for a series that is so overwhelmingly popular. (7/10)

Sound: If there's one way to get into the series, it's with this OP, My War, by Shinsei Kamattechan. It sets the mood so well and it's a fantastic choice to start you off. Yuuko Andou sings Shougeki, the ED, and it's a more sombre tune - which kind of reminds me of the Madoka endings. They feel suitable for anime that isn't short on dark themes. Voice cast all return, with Bryce Papenbrook (Eren) taking a big step here. He felt like an awkward fit for Eren in the first and second season, but he's far better with this new Eren. Jessie James Grelle (Armin) also improves their role. Newcomers Lindsay Seidel (Gabi), Matt Shipman (Floch), Anairis Quinones (Yelena) and Zeno Robinson (Onyankopon) all fit very well into their roles as well. (9/10)

Overall: To say I'm disappointed on Attack on Titan: Final Season is a bit of an understatement. I was such a huge fan of the previous seasons that I felt jumping into a timeskip would set them up so well. Until they decided to lean into the politics, rather than the action. Sure, there's probably more action to come, but this wasn't the step I was hoping for. I'm honestly a bit shocked that this season scored so well for MAL users, but you can't always be in the majority, and I'll keep watching the series to see how long this lasts. (7/10)

I got motion sick watching one of the episodes, I think it was Ep 4, and it was like watching a slideshow it was really bad. I normally love MAPPA but I think they did not do a good job on this one, can't recommend watching it. The story went off the rails and I just got annoyed with the show by the end of it. The first 3 seasons were absolute peak fiction and this just left me feeling pretty let down I guess. I think it's too dissimilar in style and story for it to be enjoyable for someone ...
