Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Dreams are doomed to die in Night City, a futuristic Californian metropolis. As a teenager living in the city's slums, David Martinez is trying to fulfill his mother's lifelong wish for him to reach the top of Arasaka, the world's leading security corporation. To this end, he attends the prestigious Arasaka Academy while his mother works tirelessly to keep their family afloat.

When an incident with a street gang leaves David's life in tatters, he stumbles upon Sandevistan cyberware—a prosthetic that grants its wearer superhuman speed. Fueled by rage, David implants the device in his back, using it to exact revenge on one of his tormentors. This gets him expelled from the academy, shattering his hopes of ever making his mother proud.

After witnessing David's newfound abilities, the beautiful data thief Lucyna "Lucy" Kushinada offers to team up with him, handing him a ticket to salvation. However, associating with Lucy introduces David to the world of Edgerunners—cyborg criminals who will break any law for money. Edgerunners often lose their lives, if the cyberware does not break their minds first; but in his fight for survival inside a corrupt system, David is ready to risk it all.

Honestly, I didn’t expect it to hit this hard. At first, it just looked stylish and cool, but the longer it went, the heavier it got — like watching someone burn themselves out just to keep going. David’s transformation feels real, painful, and kind of unfair, but that’s exactly what makes it so good.

The art style fits perfectly with the mood — neon, brutal, yet full of emotion. Every frame screams “Cyberpunk.” The characters feel alive, even when they’re falling apart. Lucy is like calmness in the middle of all that chaos.

You don’t need to know the game to feel this anime. It’s fast, cruel, ... but honest about what it means to dream in a world that doesn’t care about you.

Just 10 episodes, yet it leaves a deeper mark than most 100-episode shows.

Just2Terrify

Mixed Feelings

The entire story is fast paced, and decently told. Without going into too many spoilers; the way each characters backstory is handled, to the massive shift between episode 5 to episode 6 with the immediate shift from leader to leader, to the dramatic shift in energy and tone. It feels like the anime was sad for the sake of being sad, and I get the whole premise of "there are no happy endings in Night City" but this just feels rushed and executed in an odd way. The only two characters I had any form of connection to is Lucyna and David.. which makes any ... sad moments that occurs feel insignificant.

This, to me, is carried by its art-style, and animation; however it lacks any proper development outside of our two main characters. This is a problem when there's supposed to be a cast of main characters that share the spotlight. It's got a good pace and great animation, but with the lack of proper development.. there's only so much good art-style and animation can do.

First off great opening song, great ending song
Starts off really strong, world building is good for first few episodes, nice plot layout for the first episode, however It's like they built the whole anime around the last two episodes and first two and it shows.
It's mostly episodic, very little plot carries over.
The animation for most of the action scenes is very stilted and poor. Usually only one thing going on at a time, and the action scenes were not very well thought ... out, except the last two episodes
What does cyberpunk EdgeRunners do good? Dialogue is pretty good. Unnecessary vulgarities are a bit jarring. Nothing against profanity, it just seemed forced for "edginess" *pun intended*
Another thing it does real well is character development, character involvement and character conclusions. Most characters are compelling, some are completely forgettable. It throws plots out there that seem like they'll be developed and then they're completely forgotten about. Great soundtrack, love the metal songs especially. The last episode had everything you would want and expect from what the series lays out, but it's what you would want and expect in more of the episodes...mild romances between some characters take the back burner after being built up.

All in all a decent attempt, but seemingly rushed and incoherent with it's pacing.

Who is this anime for?
Those who want a simple, short, genre melding adventure. You can definitely turn your brain off for this one and enjoy the ride.

Who is this anime not for? Those looking for a psychological, philosophical anime with a message. Not for fans looking for an extremely high octane ride, or anything extremely unique.
