Timid 16-year-old Rito Yuuki has yet to profess his love to Haruna Sairenji—a classmate and object of his infatuation since junior high. Sadly, his situation becomes even more challenging when one night, a mysterious, stark-naked girl crash-lands right on top of a bathing Rito.
To add to the confusion, Rito discovers that the girl, Lala Satalin Deviluke, is the crown princess of an alien empire and has run away from her home. Despite her position as the heiress to the most dominant power in the entire galaxy, Lala is surprisingly more than willing to marry the decidedly average Rito in order to avoid an unwanted political marriage.
To LOVE-Ru depicts Rito's daily struggles with the bizarre chaos that begins upon the arrival of Lala. With an evergrowing legion of swooning beauties that continuously foil his attempted confessions to Haruna, To LOVE-Ru is a romantic comedy full of slapstick humor, sexy girls, and outlandishly lewd moments that defy the laws of physics.
To Love-Ru is licensed in North America by Sentai Filmworks and distributed by Section23 Films. To Love-Ru has been adapted into five video games; two Nintendo DS visual novels, two Playstation Vita games, and a smartphone game.
Story: Pretty much all filler. Each episode stands alone except the ending and they don't really play off of each other. The series strays way too far from the Manga and doesn't explore the main parts where you see many characters develop themselves. I understand that the Manga has stories that end in one chapter and expansion is necessary to make the Anime but they could've handled it better. A similar style to the beginning of Full Metal Panic Fumoffu would've been cool where there were two stories split between an episode. Since chapters for To-Love-Ru are short, that would've been a great direction for this show to take. However, this show's filler made me feel incredibly bored as most of the stories weren't even adapted from the Manga. They were original stories. Only some of the episodes were based off the Manga. The ending was disappointing but you can predict that it'll go nowhere anyway. A predictable "plot" and being composed of mostly ecchi scenes gets it a 5. I'll admit that a few of the episodes, maybe five of them, I really liked, thought they were well done, and made me laugh a bit.
Art: Better than I expected for a series like this. It was pretty consistent for each episode. Nothing looked too horrible to me.
Sound: Nothing in the bgm caught my attention and the opening was just okay. As for the voice acting, I didn't really have a problem with anyone. No one was extremely annoying to listen to. They did a pretty good job here.
Character: I did enjoy watching some of the characters but a lot of them seemed neglected and didn't get much screen time, which kind of disappointed me. I know they're side characters but if they're going to show up more than a few times, make them do more than "Oops, you can see my panties" or accidentally get naked. I suppose in the end, I shouldn't expect more than that in a series like this.
Enjoyment: I finished it. That's a sign that I didn't completely hate it. Most of the episodes made me want to punch my screen though. They were that awful and stupid. So be careful with it. It's supposed to be comedy as well but it didn't spark too much laughter from me. I wouldn't say that they're trying too hard or anything like that. It's just that most of the pervy jokes, accidents and misunderstandings are things we've seen before.
Overall: I wouldn't mind a second series since they have more material to pull from and I enjoyed the Manga. It would be great to see certain stories animated. I just did not like how this turned out because despite the Manga being mostly stand alone stories, the creators of this show felt the need to make their own plots for many episodes... Would I recommend this to anyone? Not really since I can basically describe this as generic. It's nothing outstanding and there's a lot of "typicalness" to it. If anything, for those new to Anime it might just be their first ecchi comedy because if you start watching Anime, you'll run into these somewhere along the line unless you're very selective and careful.

Uhhmm... well how can I say it.. Welcome to your Typical Harem Show!
This review is for To love-ru season 1 ONLY (not the whole 3 seasons like others)
So if your a fan of this show and you just hit the not helpful button cause I give it a low score, Well i don't mind but me, I just want to write my opinion in this 1st season. I'm not discouraging anyone to not watch this 1st season, I'm just being straight forward.
I really want to watch this show long time ago, but when I previewed the first episode long time ago. I said "another lame MC? mehh.. I pass" so it take me 2 years to finally watch this anime completely. This time I'm confidently enough that I'll finish this anime without getting bored, cause I watched so many below average anime and still manage to finish it. This anime is a harem show, so I a normal man want to enjoy some harem/ecchi scene in this anime.
So what this anime gave me? (the answer is in the bottom of the overall review)
Normal-kun want to confess his feelings to a certain girl but he can't cause he's too shy/unlucky. One day an alien girl suddenly appears to his bath tub and because he ACCIDENTALLY fondle her breast and ACCIDENTALLY said that he loves her. He must marry this alien girl or else the earth will be obliterate.
With that the normal life of normal-kun becomes upside down. Then every other episode they will introduce some extra character to just ruin the normal life of normal-kun. Sometimes they make no sense in the story and made me think "wth is that?". Some episodes made me skip some minutes cause I can't handle the stupidness and awfulness on that scene. So the story? it has no story after all. It's full of fillers and cliche comedy presentations. The only character that made me laugh is Zastin, He must be the best supporting character in this anime if there was. It's not bad enough though, every episodes there still some decent ecchi scene that no man can't resist.
Every episodes I'm just saying to myself "hang in there for the sake of ecchi scenes".
I really want to give a high score in this category cause the all the heroins do nothing wrong, but I can't cause The Normal-kun drag them down.
So who is this Normal-kun? Let me introduce to you the another contender for Harem King (Without doing anything).
Rito Yuuki - Ohh. He's kind how nice. uhmm also He is kind... Best MC indeed *sarcastic*. The typical kind MC and always misunderstood (how original). He's just there to fondle your breast and say that "It was an accident". He's just there to show his kindness and because of the rule of Harem You must become in love with him. And the worst he such an indecisive, He keeps thinking the other girl while the there's girl right beside him. Although there is a good thing about him, He is kind. I also learned a useful information from the Great Rito Yuuki. To become the Greatest man in the universe, You must run every morning and flirt with another girl. WOW, We need to try this everyone!. I was scared that He might end up like Makoto Itou of school days, Thank God he's safe.
*sigh* I would like to give him some lesson from Keima Katsuragi if possible before he enters the sacred harem route.
For the Heroins: Lala, Haruna, Yami, Yui, Mikan this girls do nothing wrong. They gave they part in this anime (the fan services). It's just that the MC is lacking.
So if there's an individual score - [Rito Yuuki- 1/10] [All Girls- 7/10]
Sounds and Art: (7/10)
Because of the character designs, especially for the heroins. The sounds are decent enough for this anime.
I enjoy some episodes and some episodes make me feel like to go outside and punch some random thug to release my anger. It's so inconsistent and so much useless episodes, well at least there is the fan service to ease my tortured eyes.
The only reason that I watch this season 1 is for the sake of To love-ru Darkness (They said it's much better). Many people said to me that I must watch the 1st season for the character development. Although that I can't see that development after all. I doubt that I was tricked.
Answer: Disappointment (well I'm looking forward to "To love-ru Darkness" I hope everything is will become better in that season)
Edit: (I'm currently watching the motto to love-ru, It has better story/ecchi, better art, Rito is less annoying (finally). So I just wanted to say that if you're so eager to drop this series, You better not. I'm suggest that to watch at least first 13 episodes then jump to episode 26 to just know the characters then you can skip all the remaining episodes (it's quite useless and the most painful thing that I ever watch). Then now you can now continue the series by watching first the ova, then motto to love-ru, then finally the To love-ru Darkness series. I'm currently enjoying watching the Motto to love-ru after the disaster of this 1st season. So don't lose hope everyone.read more
Well I watched this series due to a suggestion in the recommendations of Rosario + Vampire.. Although the shows are both somewhat similar.. I expected a bit more out of the series.
Let me start with this.. there are to me.. two seasons to this series basically..and the second series starts somewhere around episode 14.. but.. too be quite honest in my opinion.. Episodes 18-24 are basically OVAs that are stuffed in.. I mean.. There is the story of Kyoto the Fire Girl..a entire episode about a show Lala and Rito watch on television.. which had absolutely nothing to do with anything.. There is an episode (23) that is adapted to Japanese folk tales which is really neat and informative.. but it has absolutely nothing to do with the storyline..
The first episodes though.. 1-10 kept me well entertained.. and I laughed alot.. and the art is done really well.. and of course.. the fanservice is about the only thing that kept me interested enough to watch it.. the girls are very busty.. and very beautiful.. lol.. its hard not to enjoy Lala .. because shes buxom and clueless most of the time.. I liked most of the characters in this.. I didnt find any I didnt really care for much.
The OP and the ED are decent.. they sort of fit the general feel of the show.. if you like ecchi.. youll love the OP .. lol.. indeed..
So let me warn you with this in closing.. if you dont like fanservice/ecchi ..pass this up.. because its the only thing that keeps this series somewhat afloat.. due to the fact that its so accessive it makes you giggle a bit..
Would I suggest this anime? .... Yes... but to someone who just wants to watch something maybe as a change of pace or a break from a anime they just watched with a really deep storyline.. or if you just want to see alot of half naked girls with a couple laughs lol.
Alright so the story of To Love Ru is about a boy name Yuuki Rito who gropes a pink-haired alien name Lala who is the princess of Deviluke. After trying to confess his feelings to a girl, Haruna Sairenji, he accidentally confesses to Lala and says to him "Lets get married". From there on Rito tries to get out of the relationship with Lala, but has other things in his way that actually makes him closer to her. The plot does get more of a serious tone towards the end of the anime, but overall it's just a fun anime.
My favorite character in this show is without a doubt Lala. She is one of my all time favorite female characters. I don't know why but I like characters like her. This charismatic, upbeat, joyful personality and always having a positive outlook no matter how bad the situation. Even though Rito accidentally "proposed" to her. Lala loves Rito with all her heart and you can see in the show that she is devoted to him. Speaking of Rito he is a clumsy pervert. Literally think of every way to accidentally cop a feel and he does it. He doesn't like to think of himself as a pervert he just is really clumsy. And yes that is a running gag in this show. I also like that unlike other harem male leads, Rito doesn't want a harem he just gets tangled up into one.
The comedy in my opinion is pretty funny. Even though some people can get irritated with running gags, but I just love them.
Do I think To Love Ru is great. No. In all honesty the story is pretty stupid, but is it funny and entertaining Yes. I think this show is very good, has likable characters, nice music and voice acting. If you don't like ecchi anime then you're going to dislike this show. Overall I say give it a watch.read more
