Synopsis

Young Thorfinn grew up listening to the stories of old sailors that had traveled the ocean and reached the place of legend, Vinland. It's said to be warm and fertile, a place where there would be no need for fighting—not at all like the frozen village in Iceland where he was born, and certainly not like his current life as a mercenary. War is his home now. Though his father once told him, "You have no enemies, nobody does. There is nobody who it's okay to hurt," as he grew, Thorfinn knew that nothing was further from the truth.

The war between England and the Danes grows worse with each passing year. Death has become commonplace, and the viking mercenaries are loving every moment of it. Allying with either side will cause a massive swing in the balance of power, and the vikings are happy to make names for themselves and take any spoils they earn along the way. Among the chaos, Thorfinn must take his revenge and kill Askeladd, the man who murdered his father. The only paradise for the vikings, it seems, is the era of war and death that rages on.

Vinland Saga is a very bingeable anime that lives up to the “saga” in its title. The story is referencing old Norse sagas, more so than history—although real historical figures and events show up.

Though this is largely thanks to the excellent source material, the story does an excellent job remembering and reflecting on themes throughout the season, creating conclusions to thoughts as well as plot lines. Oftentimes anime—particularly action heavy anime—forgets what it is about in the meandering of the plot. In Vinland Saga, when you think they may have wandered too far, they bring it back to a major theme (family, fatherhood, ...

Mixed Feelings
"If I had a son called Thorfinn, he would be disowned." --Sir Glitch

Series is mid, so mid-review because it would have been great if the writers actually did something with Thorfinn.

This is were the problem lies, the setting in western europe with the Danes and Saxons fighting over England is an excellent setting with full of interesting characters like Askeladd and Thorkell. But then you have dead weight like Thorfinn that drags the entire series down into the depths of niflheim.

Seriously though, what were they thinking... by the end of Season 1, I was way more invested in Askeladd because he actually had a ...

when I first started this anime it looked very promising and I watched like 8 episode in a day, but when it got to episode 10 it started to get really boring and it got really boring near the end and there were a lot of times I though about dropping the anime.
I also found the story very basic, a orphaned kid trying to get revenge for his dad, I've seen anime like this multiple times I just think the author could of made it more interesting and unique. also I found that Thorfinn came from a weak little kid to a super strong ...
