Violet Evergarden

The Great War finally came to an end after four long years of conflict; fractured in two, the continent of Telesis slowly began to flourish once again. Caught up in the bloodshed was Violet Evergarden, a young girl raised for the sole purpose of decimating enemy lines. Hospitalized and maimed in a bloody skirmish during the War's final leg, she was left with only words from the person she held dearest, but with no understanding of their meaning.

Recovering from her wounds, Violet starts a new life working at CH Postal Services after a falling out with her new intended guardian family. There, she witnesses by pure chance the work of an "Auto Memory Doll," amanuenses that transcribe people's thoughts and feelings into words on paper. Moved by the notion, Violet begins work as an Auto Memory Doll, a trade that will take her on an adventure, one that will reshape the lives of her clients and hopefully lead to self-discovery.

Violet Evergarden is a breathtaking anime that reaches far beyond its stunning visuals. At its core, it’s a deeply emotional journey of healing, self-discovery, and the human need for connection. The story follows Violet, a former soldier turned Auto Memory Doll, as she seeks to understand the meaning behind the words “I love you”—the final message left to her by someone precious.

Each episode unfolds like a quiet poem, exploring different facets of love, loss, and the human condition through the lives of those Violet helps. As she writes letters for others, she begins to unravel her own feelings and confront the trauma of her past. ... The emotional depth is profound, and some episodes are so touching they may leave you in tears.

The animation by Kyoto Animation is nothing short of spectacular—every frame is lovingly crafted with rich detail and beauty. The soundtrack, too, is gentle and evocative, perfectly complementing the series' tone.

Violet Evergarden is more than just a visually beautiful anime; it’s a powerful narrative about finding purpose after pain, and learning how to feel. If you’re looking for a heart-warming and emotionally resonant experience, this series is a must-watch.

Felt like the writers were asleep for the first nine episodes, woke up for episode 10, and then immediately went back to sleep. Nothing actually happens, and Violet often takes a backseat to the main character of each episode (which I get is intentional to make her seem more human by the end, but still). The series devolves into "melodrama of the week," with forced emotional manipulation and shallow character development. The portrayal of a post-war world is overly idealistic, with characters depicted as excessively kind, lacking the depth expected from such a setting. The series often resolves complex conflicts too easily, undermining the gravity ... of the situations and leaving viewers unsatisfied. Biggest issue? The Major. They did NOT need to make it a romantic relationship. Seriously. It’s a big, big, big, did I say big? MISTAKE. I cannot stress this enough. Can they please stop forcing this Major nonsense? He is not a good character.

Do you enjoy stories that romanticize romance between 14- and 24-year-olds?

Violet Evergarden is an episodic period fantasy set somewhere around the late Victorian era in an alternate world, focused on a journey of self-discovery of the title character, a 14-year-old girl bearing the scars of war. Many of the tales told within are touching, heartbreaking. The art direction is gorgeous, and its score remains an all-time favorite of mine. This show looks—and, especially, sounds—stunning.

It's not enough, however, to distract you. From learning that Violet isn't just some victim of war, but a superpowered war machine, the nature of which will be afforded neither explanation nor ... exploration. From watching Violet dodge a hail of bullets as she Naruto-runs across a snow-covered forest floor before roughing up a group of armed soldiers. From realizing, upon story's end, that it tried to advocate for the relationship of an early teen with an adult a decade (or more) their senior, not once, but twice.

Violet "年齢の垣根はない" Evergarden isn't really a period-inspired drama about a girl shaped by war. You will find no meaningful character development here. It's a wish-fulfillment fantasy for romantically hopeless, socially maladjusted adolescents, bundled up in an ornate wrapper. And the packaging really is beautiful, too.
