The battle in the beginning was great. It was so colorful. Other half was so sad :( Iroha's past was very touching.

I think the episode's goal was to make us understand that, even if we are gay, lesbian or bisixual it's still you. It was aimed at the ones who didn't who they really are, and confused about their sexual identity, but it's just you "Iro is Iro"

I mean, the drawing is another hint. Her drawings are particular because she is different, a not everyone like it

Watching the heroines visiting someone else's "world" was a surprise. Now, I suppose we will soon get Yayaka's version.

I wonder why the gate was judged dangerous (by the robot and Yayaka¨)

5/5

About the "auntie": I believed that "big brother/sister" and uncle/aunt were equivalents of Mr/Mrs and (young)man/woman (used accoording to the age). Since when is it literally translated ?

This is what I experienced as far as memory loss or disorientation, so I'm not too sure why Cocona-Iro predictably running away after not being recognized is revelatory. It connects with something at the heart of the narrative. We differ in that I would find knowing about more moving because people can understand pure emotion overwhelming a sense of judgment, are aware of and had the emotional immaturity of a kid, accentuates the effect and basically gives the scene an additional dimension without being too heavy handed while also keeping the notion of just plain forgetting it.

The lady was associated with acceptance and happiness in contrast to a perceived unwantedness and coldness in her home life to the point of not wanting to go bacm. Why judge such a kid so harshly here? What about the potential sympathy built by previous scenes and empathy? Saying that, it opens another side of the conflict as it's happening rather than as a remembrance of forewarning that comes across as an easy psychological fix. Well, whatever, starting to sound like harping.

I don't think that is closure for Iroha because its basically denial of what actually happened in her past. Its closure to the viewer, which is why I call it fan service.
If you interpret it like that, it speaks a little about the goals of "world domination" and liberating PI. Wouldn't it be different since Iroha essentially blamed herself, took responsibility, and in that way was able to move past previous feelings? Doesn't that conflict with denial?

The cave scene with the aunt responding to her promise would be denial. There are other ways with resolving guilt by recreating events inside your head that didn't happen. Its a slap in the face, they are other tropes that get the point across that would bring more catharsis to the viewer and bring about a good ending.

Since we don't know her name. Calling her "the mrs" would be awkward.

@Ajunkie I mean, when she's directly addressed to.
(argh, it might not be english... "when someone talks to her")

I actually noticed it in many official subtitles those last years, like it was some sort of new trend (the other way was the most common one used among my 2000s DVD series)

@Ajunky I'm like you most of the time, unless it's supposed to be a talk between non-japanese people. ^^

@rsc-pl It is larger than that in Japan: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1565879&show=0#msg48530366

@Rei366 - Now that you mention it, yeah, it's probably the trend now... It's been like that for a while.

Personally I prefer when words like those stays untranslated, but we can't ask for that in official subs... and I rarely mind the difference anyhow.

Wow. This anime won't stop amaze me. It's getting better and better.
About the 'auntie'. Is it a way that American children are addressing to older people which they know (much older friends of their parents etc)? I don't know how it works in USA, but If they don't, then we have a huge tl error here. But if they are, then I would still prefer untranslated version, because it's much more clear, but in this case auntie would be perfectly fine. @Ajunky, @Rei366 hmm? :> In Poland it works in that way actually, kids are often calling 'aunt' and 'uncle' people which are not really their family, but they are 'connected' in some way with their family.

Edit @Rei366
Actually I know how it works in Japan, but I don't know how it works in USA, and official subs are usually intended for USA market. If situation is identical or very similar, then using 'auntie' instead Mrs. is perfectly fine (and generally way better than Mrs) in this case. The only difference is that Japanese kids are using it for calling in that way complete strangers too, but we don't know how this 'pure illusion' worked, that older woman could be a friend of her family. Their memories were clearly altered in this world, so I would argue that using 'Mrs' would be better. The best option would be using untranslated word, because the meaning is clear for almost everyone.

I really enjoyed this episode of Flip Flappers. I do like how in this episode was going into Iro's POV and seeing how she loved being with her Auntie as she drew those wonderful pictures of hers. But at the same time, she also had issues with her parents that showed the other side of how things aren't always what they seem to be. I do know that Cocona and Papika can enter into someone's dream like for instance from episode 2 about Ueskill. So that would mean it's very possible that they can enter into Pure Illusion which the two can invert themselves from one to the other like with Papika being golden and Cocona as blue representing different emotional states of mind.

I almost cried about Iro's aunt about how she didn't know her and that was really sad. Anyway, Cocona and Papika were able to save her but I think she developed Alzheimer's which is really painful to watch someone close to you suffers from such a terrible disease.

Well, so far, I'm really liking Flip Flappers very much and we've yet to see the major conflict at some point. I'm looking forward to watching more!

You're reading far to much into my post (and I am very aware of what Illya is). My only intent was in response to your comment as to why Yayaka couldn't transform - and it immediately reminded me of the contrast between Illya and Miyu regarding flying - to Miyu it was obvious that people can't fly, were as to Illya it wasn't even a matter of thought - it just was something she did, as natural as breathing. (I thought it meshed well with your comment. Sorry if I caused an issue.)

Ok, so I'm pretty sure this theory is wrong, but I want to throw it out there just because so many people are making positive connections with Papika and Cocona going into Iroha's past/memories. But that eerie door really makes me think that messing around with people's pasts is not a good thing.

What do you think about the possibility that Papika and Cocona actually 'erased' that part of Iroha's past, or at least that part of her memories? Since at the end she paints her nails again like it's no longer a big deal... of course, she could have reconciled the memories to herself (possibly with Papika & Cocona's help). But maybe it's possible that they actually lived those memories for her, or they took them on... and now Iroha no longer has them as a part of herself? Thoughts?

I did an analysis of this episode and explained who the two different "Iros" were. It's on my blog if anyone wants to check it out.

I DID TOO!!
My mum works with elderly folk that suffer from this so yep, I called it. :(

Mine does too. :) Apparently Alzheimer's is increasingly common in the aging Baby Boomer generation, so there's a surging need for caregivers. Nightwish's Imaginaerum movie is another fantasy take on it, set largely in the dream worlds of a dying man's mind, where he's a child. It's not a great film, but I think it's worth a watch. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Tn_ZgUmUTU

I guess my favorite ending would still be The Notebook, but stories about Alzheimer's are always more bitter than sweet unless they end in an afterlife.

Even though it happened earlier too from other shows but actually never cared to remember all the character names along with their faces...

@Rei366 - A scriptwriter shift at an original series? That's potentially fatal for consistency... now I'm worried.

... Of course, they can always pretend said consistency was never intended... Let's see what happens.

EDIT: There is something else worrisome about that post... if the scriptwriter doesn't know how it's going to end, it kinda suggest they were improvising all along... or that perhaps the team did not all concur in the general direction.

Whatever the case, I have a bad feeling about this.

That's pretty bad news, not gonna lie. She did a tremendous job on this week's episode and I'm not sure anyone other than herself could top it. I really hope whoever takes her place will be careful not to stray too far from the main thematics of the show and maintain the subtlety that makes each episode so enjoyable and rewatchable.

There's a link to the source at the end of the article, it's on Yaraon: http://yaraon-blog.com/archives/94973 . The tweet in question is even cited there.

I can confirm the tweet was accurately interpreted. She says that as the staff for episode 7 was about to be revealed to the public, she used the occasion to tweet about the end of her involvement with FliFla starting from episode 6. She was able to watch over the finalisation of the manuscript for this episode, but she really doesn't know how things will turn out from episode 7 onwards. She will nonetheless continue to enjoy the show as a viewer.

Interesting to hear the writer has left the project. A shame but I suppose ideally any new writer(s) will still have the series story outline to continue working off of from here on out, barring any rewrites that may happen in the course of scripting.

Brilliant episode. And again, this show does such a good job of not spelling things out for the audience; instead, it lets you figure out things for yourself. Cool theories in this thread, too.

Iroha's family life as a child hit a little too close to home. I'm glad she had a wonderful person like Auntie in her life. Sad what happened to Auntie in the end, though. :(

I'm a bit confused on what happened this episode...I'll try reading comments of posted here to get an idea...hahah! This show is literally simple if you just watch it but it also has a deeper symbolism meaning inside. (simple yet complex)
So Pure Illusion reaches to the subconscious of someone particularly to Iroha.
But we've yet to see the main conflict of this show.

I absolutely loved this episode. Best one yet. Perfect mix of fun absurd action, and emotional beats. I am also totally buying into the idea that Pure Illusion is the world of people's dreams, and that gate took them from dreams to memories. Amazing episode, this show is slowly working it's way up through my rankings.

Apparently Iro's parents really didn't care all that much about their daughter if they didn't even realize that she was going to a strangers house pretty much everyday.

Those red portals are really interesting to me. I think changing the past is probably out of the question, but changing memories of people is maybe a bit more realistic.

I'd like to know whether Bu-chan signing "danger" was because of him knowing what those red portals are, or simply him saying going into a portal like that, without any knowledge of what happens if you do, is dangerous in general.

Not necessarily, I mean, at a very late stage of the disease, that is true, but can you imagine what the person is feeling in those few moments when they actually remember things and their situation, only to then know that they will inevitably forget all their loved ones yet again?

I like the theoretical discussions that people have come up with too. Collecting the fragments might be piecing back together somebody's split personalities, or just their consciousness. I dunno, but it's original and we literally don't know the end. No biases or expectations based on source material! I really love this ride I'm on.
