Papika and Cocona hold the keys to open the door. When the two girls meet, their adventures in a different time and different overlapping dimension called "Pure Illusion" begin. Many things in Pure Illusion will stand in the girls' way on their search for the mysterious crystal called the "Shard of Mimi," an item that is said to grant any wish. However, when the girls find themselves in danger, the Shard of Mimi shines, and they are able to transform.
Have you ever felt like a show was made just for you? One that, in spite of all its flaws, you can see some good in it? Flip Flappers is this to me, at least so far.
Flip Flappers is fun, original and refreshing. Believe me, watching the first episode and seeing Papika surfing in the air with her hoverboard is extremely refreshing from a lot of LN derivatives and High School Garbage I've the displeasure of wasting my time on.
Then there is the superb animation, the surprisingly memorable musical scores, and the vibrant colors ties everything together for a splendid 20 minute episode of fun.
If there's anything I'd criticize though, it's the fanservice. A bit too much, but not overboard.
With regards to plot, since it's an anime original, and since each episode has a surprising amount of detail in it, just guessing and speculating is great fun to be had. And even if everything ends up being a farce, the whole anime is so fun to watch you wouldn't care.
Still, this is the best I've felt since watching FLCL.read more
What can I say? I'm 5 episodes in and Flip Flappers continues to impress me with its originality and absolutely gorgeous animation and art style. Every episode gives us something different and I look so damn forward to Thursdays because of this show it's unreal.
The story is told in a nonlinear fashion in that there are major breaks in chronology between episodes, which leaves us filling in the blanks as to what happened. In fact, filling in the blanks is something you'll get used to doing with Flip Flappers, because it doesn't really explain anything at all. Far from being a negative, however, this only adds to the mystery and intrigue. You begin to relate to Cocona because you're just as clueless as her. You are experiencing all the weird and nonsensical things she is and though you have some subconscious inklings as to what's going on - you don't know anything for certain.
The art and animation are absolutely stunning. The colours are vivid and character designs are striking. It's one of the best looking shows I've seen on that front. Likewise, the sound design is great especially in regards to the music, which is every bit as quirky and fun as it is immersive, atmospheric and dramatic as needed.
Overall, the show is incredibly fun and charismatic whilst being deceptively sophisticated. It might not be for you if you don't like things that are too wacky and random or just don't really make much sense. Flip Flappers takes the artistic medium that is Anime and really pushes it to its limits whilst throwing traditional conventions of storytelling out the window.read more
Flip Flappers blew us out right at it's first episode with its Ghibli-like art style and animation along with its pretty unique setting and interesting pair of main characters.
Flip Flappers has a very subtle way of storytelling which a lot of viewers are not that fond of. Instead, every episode is packed with fun and action which seems to convey that this show focuses more on entertainment rather than narrative(also since this is an original anime). But to sum it up, the plot tells us the story of Cocona and Papika and their adventures as they journey through this world called Pure Illusion to obtain this so-called crystals that grants wishes. The plot is pretty unique in a way since it is something fresh and new and it widely differs from the types of animes that you see this days. The characters are pretty likable and in the course of the 4 episodes that are released as i am making this review, our main characters are already well-developed and they have built a strong relationship. As for the animation, although it's pretty surprising since this is made by a lesser-known animation studio, I have nothing more to demand from it . With its unique art style combined with vibrant colors and detail makes it pleasing to look at(Yeah, it gives off an atmosphere similar to those made by studio Ghibli). The music used by the show is also pretty good specially in the opening and ending theme.
Flip Flappers is my favorite anime from this season. Aside from the subtle storytelling that i have mentioned before, there might be nothing else that viewers might find unlikable. I am looking forward to how this show would progress cus this show is really fun to watch.
Reposting since the first one got deleted "rolls eyes"
I have gotten into a really bad habit of judging something by its cover. For some reason something with girls sparkling and magical power just never appealed to me and seemed boring and too happy. But boy was I wrong, this show has potential to be super bomb af because this show depicts hatred, happiness, confusion and others. To me this show is a show that is pure imagination and it is something that I have been looking for.
Unrated because it is only starting but it has something to it that captivates me and holds my attention. Two girls who never met before holding onto each other for different reasons just excites me (because I like that the two main characters aren't/don't have to be in a sexual relationship just really good friends.) Cocona reminds of me of me because my attitude (in real life) towards the future and how uncertain and my lack of willingness to move forward. Papika reminds me of my imagination that wishes to run free from this binding world. The plot is not developed yet but it seems like they (of course) want to control something like Dr. Salt wants...(Hint... Maybe)
Has some showy stuff in the anime like sparkles and dramatized light reflections. I wasn't sure about this at first but I really enjoy the vibrant colors that make this show come to life right before my eyes. The art isn't realistic (which anime normally isn't, i'm not generalizing shows) it just makes you see other colors than black and white.
As you can see I enjoy the show so far and I am waiting to see what else this show gives me. Waiting to see what other emotions can this show make me feel because I already feel excitement, and happiness to be apart of a genre of TV that not everyone can accept. Don't be too serious with this show, keep your imagination open and your world open to "pure illusion".read more
