action adventure comedy pirates shounen |
SynopsisGol D. Roger was known as the Pirate King, the strongest and most infamous being to have sailed the Grand Line. The capture and death of Roger by the World Government brought a change throughout the world. His last words before his death revealed the location of the greatest treasure in the world, One Piece. It was this revelation that brought about the Grand Age of Pirates, men who dreamed of finding One Piece (which promises an unlimited amount of riches and fame), and quite possibly the most coveted of titles for the person who found it, the title of the Pirate King.
Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy that defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate who ransacks villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder; the thought of an exciting adventure and meeting new and intriguing people, along with finding One Piece, are his reasons of becoming a pirate. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach One Piece.

There are two responses I get, without fail, every time I try to get someone new to watch this show. "I don't like the art style," or "I've seen the dub - NO THANKS." I'm guilty of both of these myself. But if there's one thing I need to stress before even getting started on this review, it's that the 4Kids dub is NOT One Piece. For the love of god, PLEASE do not think it is. If you've suffered the misfortune of seeing some of the 4Kids episodes, just erase them from your mind and start fresh. They butchered it, there's really no other way to put it. They cut episodes, changed the dialogue to fit a MUCH younger and apparently far less intelligent audience (almost insultingly so), gave the characters RIDICULOUS voices, and pretty much watered down the entire series. FUNimation has done a much better job so far from what I've seen, but regardless, watching it in its original Japanese form with subtitles is really the way to go.
As for the art style, it's true, it's completely different from almost anything else I've seen. Much more "cartoonish" and maybe not what you'd expect from an anime. Despite that, you end up loving it. I wouldn't even say that you have to "get used to it" because it's not something that detracts from the rest of the series in any way. It didn't even take me two episodes before I was thoroughly enjoying it and seeing it as a fresh, new style, exciting almost and unlike anything I'd experienced before. Now, some 300+ episodes later, I can't remember ever NOT liking it, or even why I would have. Especially now with One Piece being aired in high definition, the art is crisp, clean, colorful - VERY sharp and wonderful to look at.
Now that we've got those two points out of the way...
One Piece is actually one of the best shows I've ever seen, anime or otherwise. The plot is pretty basic at first. Monkey D. Luffy has just set out on his own to find the legendary treasure 'one piece' and become Pirate King, and he's looking for a crew to sail with him. You'll find yourself falling in love with each and every new member as Luffy finds them. They're all extremely well developed, with interesting backgrounds and unique, fun personalities. They form one very quirky crew that's always discovering new adventures and somehow getting themselves into trouble as they strive to achieve their dreams. Each main story arc introduces new minor characters as well, and they're just as much fun and easy to fall in love with as the Straw Hat crew. Not one character is left out or feels like they're there for no reason. Everyone has a purpose and adds to the storyline, and one of the really cool things about One Piece is that these 'purposes' often resurface at later points in the series. No detail is left untouched, and you'll seriously be amazed by the way Oda threads together plots and characters and blends all their stories perfectly the more the series progresses.
The plot itself, though fairly straightforward at first like I said, quickly evolves into something HUGE. Much of the beginning of the series is dedicated to forming the crew and letting you get to know the characters, though it's definitely never lacking in action, but once they reach the Grand Line, you're swept up in adventure after adventure and following some of the most fantastic story arcs you'll ever watch. The battles and fights are well-paced, with the final boss fight almost always being completely EPIC. But even through the action, One Piece never quite loses it's lighthearted, humorous edge. The episodes are sprinkled with PLENTY of funny moments, never too many and never too few. There's always a wonderful balance of action and humor.
One Piece also has its fair share of heart-wrenching moments, which may take you by surprise! There are some EXTREMELY powerful scenes and episodes that kind of blindside you and leave you wondering when you became quite so emotionally attached to certain characters or other things. I've definitely found myself near tears or actually crying at more than one point. One Piece has it all - amazing characters, the never-ending yet never TOO over-the-top humor, exciting battles, fun adventures, heartbreaking moments with quick to follow touching moments. And underneath everything, there's always the theme of friendship and teamwork, of working to reach your dreams and helping those closest to you achieve theirs, of growing and maturing as a person and discovering the power within yourself to overcome obstacles of any sort, of just BEING THERE for the rest of your crew when they need you - of being NAKAMA.
In a word, One Piece is perfect. And perhaps I'm just biased, being an obviously OBSESSED fan at this point, haha, but what can I say? It's been running for 344 episodes so far and not ONCE have I wondered or hoped that it would start to reach an end. It is, simply put, amazing.
So why should you watch One Piece?
Because you're missing out on one hell of a fantastic show if you don't at least give it a try. read more

One Piece is by far the best shounen anime out there that I have watched.
But not all share the same views as I do, lets remedy that, shall we?
A long time ago, there live a fearsome pirate king who goes by the name of Gold D. Roger. He was able to attain everything. But alas he was captured and sentenced to execution. In the brink of death, he proclaimed that he left the great treasure, One Piece, somewhere in the Grand Line and it is for anyone to claim. This event ignited the Great Pirate Age.
In the world of One Piece, there is such a thing as a Devil Fruit. A devil fruit is a fruit bearing some supernatural ability and whoever devours it will get a unique ability however its origins are unknown. There are three types of Devil Fruit, Paramecia, a fruit that can materialize your body into a property. Zoan, a fruit that gives humans the ability of a certain animal, but if its an animal, it gives the ability of humans. And the last but certainly not the least Logia, is a fruit that makes the consumer manifest a certain element. But of course nothing is perfect. If you eat any of the Devil Fruit, you will be rendered immobilize when submerge in the water.
And where is our protagonist? The anime revolves around our mentally impaired boy, Monkey D. Luffy or a.k.a The Straw Hat Pirate(title came from his worn-out straw hat that he always have on). When our boy here ate a devil fruit that turns the consumer's body into rubber, he sets off to find Shanks, his pirate idol to return his straw hat as promise and find One Piece to be able to earn the title of Pirate King. Along the way he gathers all kinds of oddballs for his crew, The Straw Hat Pirates.
Now how exactly is One Piece different from the hundreds of shounen out there. Well, it isnt. It is exactly what a shounen should be. It follows the lose-train-win formula. So how is it any better? Bingo. Because it incorporates the formula into something fresh and simple.
One Piece arcs can be surprisingly good. There were even times that I was shocked at some plot twists and revelations. It has a very interesting setting as well. And what might that be? The World. The whole world is One Piece's oyster. It varies from vast, scorching deserts to cold snowy mountains, the concept of adventure here is well defined, it really makes you feel that world isnt small after all. And that my friend, is what an adventure anime should really be.
One Piece knows how to pull it off, be it comedy or serious, and believe me, One Piece knows how to be serious when it needs to be. But it never forgets its roots at the same time, and that is the emphasis of friendship and the bond of Nakama/Friends that glues the whole crew together.
Most shounen anime's suffers immensely from originality. Because of this, it is hard to distinguish characters from each other, especially in my case as I have my fair share as an otaku. And most of the characters in em lack depth and substance, its hard to remember a character when you know very little about him. But One Piece is immune from this disease. Each character of One Piece is very... say....unique that you'll find it hard to forget about them. They all have their individual motives, strengths, weakness and even quirky traits. Plus, each individual of the Straw Hat Pirate Crew has an immersing past, that'll be hard for you not to get delve into. And they all have a certain role, not one character gets overshadowed by the other. They do meaningful interactions with each other. And regardless, that each member is vastly different from each other, they all formed a formidable bond. Even the by-passing characters are memorable.
In contrast to the majority, I find the animation to be creative. Just like how the characters are different and distinguishable. Unfortunately people see it as something of a turn off, and quickly judges One Piece as something infantile. I am not going to lie. One Piece will not go beyond the borders of a shounen. It is not mature. But thats not the point here. An anime doesnt need to be ripe to be good. It just needs to be entertaining. Although I do enjoy a deep, thought-provoking anime, an anime doesnt need to be complex to be satisfying. It can be anything, as long as it offers gratification. And One Piece does.
Another potential problem is its popularity. Most people consider mainstream anime's to be somewhat of a failure because of its targeted demographic, and that is everyone. "If its able to attract toddlers, then it sucks" that seems to be case for most people. Some people neglect any anime that is able to summon countless little children in its area, thus abruptly convicting it as over-rated. Heck, some people even constantly hunts threads, just to be able to crack Narutard jokes off some newcomer. Do not judge One Piece from its fans. Judge it for what it is.
Do not be mistaken, I am not saying One Piece is for everyone. In the end, its all about taste. But if your have any hint of love for shounen surging in your veins, there is no reason for you not to watch this, not one bit.
In short, the plot is very promising, the main cast is several but well flesh out, the battles are very diverse, and engaging and the comedy doesnt get old, even after 300 episodes. But One Piece is not a masterpiece. It does not break any ground whatsoever. No matter how you see it, its still your typical shounen.
Regardless of this, the level of enjoyment I receive from One Piece is insurmountable. And sometimes thats all you need. Scratch that. Most of the time that's all you need. read more

Very high priority in both titles is loyality, trust and naming Nakama, main characters are near to each other. Very important is that, the both are just comedies.
One of non-many differences is that the OP is about pirates and FT is about mages :)
Character designs and athmosphere.
Very similar in art, humor, plot and everything goes around "nakama"
Let's start:
- similar artstyle: true it can be seen, and a simple motivation is that Hiro Mashima (Fairy Tail's author) and Eiichiro Oda (One Piece's author) are of the same generation who grown up admiring Akira Toriyama (Dragonball's author). Rumors are that their styles were so forged by their worshipping Toriyama; this of cours makes works of both of them share a similar, very cool art style and character design.
- special powers: in a Jump's shonen manga those can't miss. Characters with awesome strong incredible powers are everywhere in both series. In One Piece we have devil fruits which give to their users incredible abilities, while in Fairy Tail we have mages which obviously do use their own magic spells/abilities.
- action: another big part and genre that both series do share.
- purposes: friendship is the main theme which makes an important bond between the main characters in both seasons.
- heroic scenes: One Piece and Fairy Tail do share quite a lot of very awesome heroic scenes.
- female characters: both authors wanted to give to their characters some strong power and/or personalities, differently from many other shonen series where the main female is just needed there to be saved and/or making comical scenes.
Those, and many other, are the shared things by both series, but the above listed are surely the biggest points which deserved to be mentioned.
So, indeed if you liked One Piece you could give a try to Fairy Tail, or viceversa.
Although, while manga series have both a very good art style, when it comes to anime One Piece's animation quality is cured more.
it's not just similar .. i'll say it's exactly the same .. the only difference between them is that one piece is about pirates and fairy tail is about magic ..
Main Characters are similar and both filled with weirdos!
Natsu = Luffy (Cheerful Main Protagonist that wants to protect his friends)
Lucy = Nami (Similar Personalities, loves money, but is always being protected by the protaganists)
Gray = Zoro (Serious and Thoughtful)
Erza = Robin (Mysterious Women)
Happy = Chopper (Cute Mascots)
Gildarts = Shanks (Strong, Red Hair Members that are well respected)
Farewell for Laxus in Fantasia (Fairy Tail ep 48) = Farewell to Vivi in Arabasta (One Piece ep 129)
Juvia = Sanji (Crazily in love)
Master = Whitebeard (The way both masters/captains care for their guild/crew)
And to mention that each main character have their own sad pasts on their certain arcs too!
Same Art style , Same main characters , almost the same plot but fairy tail is with guilds and one piece is pirates. but personally fairy tail is a mistake and its so obvious that one piece is way way better
It's impossible to say that Fairy Tail isn't similar to One Piece...
Main Character of both Shows are quite alike (powerful but kinda idiot). The whole Adventure-style plot of both anime's (manga's) are very similar.
Quote by Pokymon: adventure + nakama + power ups..enjoy
Both Fairy Tail and One Piece have extremely similar main characters, who get hungry, eat a lot, and are in search for something. They both have great comedy and unique characters that everyone loves! :D
The drawing style of both anime looks very alike. The main character is a powerful yet a dumb and therefor a funny person. Both anime got the "Nakama" factor.
both animes are filled with humor and the main character are very alike.
Besides the other the 35 recommendations for this anime, the main reason why Fairy Tail lovers should try One Piece is because of the characters and the atmosphere. The two main protagonists (Natsu from Fairy Tail and Luffy from One pIece) are Comedic and Cheerful. The personality of one character mirrors the other character perfectly. The overall atmosphere of the animes are similar due to the art, music, sounds, and characters.
In short: Every time I watch Fairy Tail, I always think about One Piece.
First off, both are based on long shounen manga series, so they follow a bunch of story arcs in addition to the main goal. The artstyles are quite similar, with characters looking very lanky and lots of wild and colorful animations. Both also have a general theme of friends/teamwork/nakama, with the main teams of the series (Team Natsu for Fairy Tail, Strawhats for One Piece) always working with and fighting for eachother.
Yeah i reccoment Fairy tail becouse fary tail was made by a man who studyed under Oda who made One Piece, and he got his inspiration tnx to Oda so Fairy tail is pretty good + Natsu looks very similar to Luffy ^^
adventure + nakama + power ups..enjoy
It has the same kind of feeling when watching this anime. The character models and personalities are somewhat similar to the characters of One Piece.
Meet Luffy's doppleganger. The story is great, it's all about bonds that grow between nakama, and is filled with hilarity, awesome epic win, and more.
Trust me, if you liked One Piece, you'll like Fairy Tail.
Perhaps the most done rec in this new season, Fairy Tail and One Piece! The first and most obvious similarity, is STYLE. The character drawings, emotion-depicting faces, and character personalities are very similar to each other which is due to the fact that both creators went to the same art school! Luffy and Natsu are both clueless about what goes on around them, but both are overwhelming powerful when serious. Both storm the word "NAKAMA," and care deeply for their companions, close, if not closer, than family. The most common similarity are the eye-pop comedic faces. Whenever something very surprising or unexpected pops up, the characters' eyes will pop out of their heads. Storyline doesn't have much in common, but both are long-term (OP's longer however) and both are equally comical and epic.
if you loved One Piece please try out Fairy Tail its has so many simularitys u may mistake it to be related to one peice in some way :P
The concepts are nearly parallel to each other but one face remains the same One Piece is and always will be better.
They both have a main group of characters, all with their weird quirks and personalities. Plus they both have awesome adventures, good action, an interesting story, and theyre both hilarious.
Both series are very similar to each other. They have similar character designs, the same level of goofy moments and are very whimsical. Both series have a wide arrangement of intense battles and very few deaths.
They use the same recipe, and are both very well made, except that Fairy Tail is intended for a bit more mature audiences.
First of all the styles of drawing they are in are pretty similar.
Also some characters seem to act similar like they did in One Piece.
For example, the Zoro - Sanji relationship is similar to the Natsu - Gray relationship in Fairy Tail.
I really like it, so just watch it ;)
Lots of funny jokes and characters :)
Worth watching !! =^.^=
THe main characters are similar in a way in their peronality, also the animation is very much alike.
The whole atmosphere of the two anime and the genre are very much alike.
Both a fantasy type anime except Fairy Tail is about guilds. One piece and Fairy Tail both have same art type and you may enjoy it.
drawing and characterization styles are REALLY similar.
the main characters are really alike (Luffy and Natsu)
:D
Both have a similar feel. If you like one you most likely will enjoy the other.
If you liked OP, you'd probly like FT. I think Nastu (from FT) is vary much like Luffy (From OP) Also in lots of other ways this anime is kinda OP style. :)
Both of these shows revolve around the relationship of friends and your comrades. They both have lots of action to offer, while having great story lines and adventures.
Basically, if you like one, you'll like the other.
you can't get anymore shounen then these 2
they main characters are exactly alike, their both baka's to the extreme yet they somehow make everyone like them.
they also has big plans when they were little and their trying to fulfill these dreams as we speak. their also trying to find "something" but what their looking for is different.
also Nami = Lucy in almost every aspect except hair colour. their both the "straight woman" in their jokes.
and chopper = Happy. cmon, their like mascots to each team. and you can't help but hug them at least once.
and Robin = Erza because they both have horrible pasts and their super strong and well known.
also the rivalry between natsu and grey are like zoro and sanji. competition in every aspect.
and boa hancock = juvia because they both love a main character and they act the same way to their lover(?), they also think they have extreme love rivals.
both have sword fighting, fist fighting, magical fighting, ect you name it.
Same Art style, big boobed girls (Nami in One Piece, Lucy in Fiary Tail)l and an idiot main character with amazing powers and determination.
Both have great action and great comedy..If you like one..there is no way you wouldn't like the other
Fairy Tail, just like One Piece, presents the power of friendship and the will to never give up. The characters in both series are similar, while both shows emphasize comedy scenes. The main difference is the world these heroes live in. One Piece takes place in a world of pirates and treasures, Fairy Tail in a world of magic and monsters. I'd say Fairy Tail is another version of One Piece.
the author for Fairy Tail did apprentice for Oda for quite some time. So there will be similarities between the two.
Nami + Lucy
Luffy + Natsu
Ace + Gray
well its a shounen action type anime with awesome, very funny and unique characters similar to One Piece it has a good storyline and awesome art and animation .If you liked
Similar animation, similar characters.
These anime share a common comedy style and artwork. Furthermore some of the main characters exhibit similar personalities.
Both Have Similar Art Works.
Both Main Characters (Natsu (Fairy Tail), Luffy (One Piece) Have Similar Eating Habits And Are Both Confident In Their Strength Allowing Fans To Fight Who Is Better.
Both Animes/Mangas Are Rivals To Each Other.
One Big Differents Is That One Piece Is Pure Strength And Pirates And Fairy Tail Is About Magic And Mages
Almost everything is similar to one piece. Except this time instead of being pirates they are mages. There's also a very strong influence with friends or nakama with Fairy Tail Like one piece. And alot of the characters act similar with many of them in One Piece. Not to mention even the art style is similar as well.
Similar: It's a OnePiece Clone!
Difference: Pirates -> Guilds
Devil Fruits -> Magics
Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Magic, Shounen, Superpowers, Unique character, Unique story as well, Both anime has a good comedy scenes, Romance scene, Not like the others that are corny when they tell jokes, Natsu from Fairy Tail is really Similiar to Monkey D. Luffy, And the others as well, For the manga, Some of the both anime characters really look the same, Lucy and Nami has the same... err, What do you call that? But if you compare this two young ladies they really have similar right? I just can't explain it as hell as I am.
It's almost the same story as for it, When I first think of Fairy Tail when I was not watching it still, I was thinking that the story was like One Piece, But then, Yes, It really was, Just the difference are One Piece main characters were pirates while the Fairy Tail ones are mages.
Both the protagonists are looking for something while using powers that most other people don't have. They both value friendship very much, as is clearly seen in both animes.
Both have the the same feel. Natsu is like Luffy. Erza resembles Nami in a way where she beats up Natsu. The way Gray and Natsu fight, however, is like Sanji and Zoro.
Luffy is very similar to Dragneel, Natsu, both show shows people who's traveling together which means their friends. both stick together and helping each other until the end. both of the show shows some comedy/ funny episodes.
Shounen anime, about adventure, main character is searching for something. Main character is funny and not the smartest person you will ever meet. Meets lots of friends along the way. Lots of friendships. Fairy Tail has shorter battles. Main difference is Fairy Tail is in a world of magic. One Piece in a world of pirates.

They are both very hilarious and full of action moments and both very awesome.
Both are great shounen series with "fight for nakamas" plot, and goals characters have made their mind to accomplish. Also it looks like naruto somewhat resembles Luffy. If you enjoyed Naruto, I'm sure you will find One Piece amazing.
With the main characters wanting to become the best at what they do and wanting to protect those that are precious to them. Wanting to achieve their dreams, they become more powerful and meeting more friends along the way too.
(its pretty similar aside from the famous Naruto filler)
you can find the action piling up in this anime series as it also filled with nothing but action and adventure and many more of the Drama and comedy moments that will surely bring you to tears and laughter....
The mood of the series is pretty similar and the goal of the main characters is to be the best in their league. That's what I noticed when I completed Naruto and began with One Piece. If you liked Naruto you might like One Piece even better.
Two people that have their own goals and dreams. The main characters for both show are very similar. They are very clumsy, lazy, and funny, but when it comes down to protecting their friends from danger, they get serious. Both is filled with excitement, action, adventure, comedy, and fantasy.
I really like onepiece because it tells the classic story of the hero archetype, i like the refreshing way in which the story is told and the way the crew overcome obstacles, i would rank naruto and onepiece joint first in my favourite animé due to the hilarious humour and invigorating take on a well known character archetype.
Shonen anime. About a young hero who wants to become the best. Similar messages about friendship and determination to reach your goals. Characters fight using their super powers to defete evil villians who stand in thier way.
Both have main characters that act pretty dumb/stupid. And both act without thinking and do unexpected things. Also both main characters are willing to risk their lives for their friends.
If you can replace Pirates with Ninjas and vice versa, Naruto and One Piece are a lot alike with the exception of art. Naruto=Luffy (Both pretty slow and oblivious to a lot of things, but pretty badass at fighting and can be brilliant in combat), Hokage=Pirate King (Both main characters strive to be the best in the world and their dream is often looked down upon or acknowledged by various people). Both series are very humorous, deal with characteristics of friendship/teamwork and have intense fighting.
In both anime protagonists continue to go on a life with the dream which was defined in their childhood. And which has strongly changed their life. It helps them to meet new friends and as to overcome the difficulties arising on their way.
In both anime the main character has the promise, given to the friend, and as" likes to eat ". xD
In both anime very interesting abilities of heroes, their characters, charisma. And as the important place is borrowed with friendship and fidelity.
At both anime as there is a lot of humour, the cat well dilutes many heavy situations occuring during adventures of characters. So despite of all duration of anime to look them it is a pleasure.
Shounen, action, adventure manga, both with a main character who wants to fulfill their dreams. Both of them have many special combat elements and a similiar story line as getting new friends, win against enemys, some drama sequence etc.
All in all I find that One Piece stands more out, but give Naruto a try!
Both have the protoganist who are weak but dream to be the best. Then through many action/adventures they become stronger and stronger. Both have unique, very funny characters. If you like to watch long series then they are awesome ones.
Luffy is very similiar to Naruto. They´re both really childish characters with the biggest dream in mind.
Even though they act like an idiot most of the time (not a bad thing), when their friends are in danger they give all they have to save them.
There is in both an ero-dude. And there are people who were villains but eventually become nakama.
Both are absolutely way too long drawn out Shounen Anime. If you like Naruto, You'll like One Piece, if you like One Piece, you'll like Naruto. There isn't any real story line except for filler that just seems like it's real. If you like boring, extremely long, life wasting, Shounen anime, watch these.
Both are awsome shounen series, has pretty much the same premise. The idiot main character then gets serious when it's needed, comedy, action, and characters you just hate to not love -__-.One Piece is not very story driven at all but is very enjoyable, while Naruto has a developing plot after the first 13 or so episode. If you liked anyone of these check out the other you'll love it.
Both protagonists have an ultimate similar goal they want to achieve. Fighting lots of enemies along the way and many great adventures. Humor and action are prominent in both series. If you like one you'll like the other.
funny and stupid main character :D and supernatural power
Both Main Characters have dreams they wish to follow. Luffy wants to become the king of the pirates and Naruto wants to be Hokage.
First of all, I started to watch both anime because of their first endings. Naruto ending is incredibly true&sad at the same time, even if - at the first sight - the story doeasn't look very smart it's deeper then you think - just watch first two seasons! One Piece first ending I also liked because of the song (it's catchy).
On the other hand it's easier to start watching One piece than Naruto, because like I said before, Naruto's story at the beginning looks pretty dumb. Much dumber than One Piece's ;D
BUT I like both these anime :) (much more Naruto <3)
Main characters are dumb. Big meaning've got bonds.
