SynopsisIn this world, humans coexist with demonic predators called Yoma. These demonic beasts feast on human innards and can blend into human society by taking on human appearance. As a counter force, a mysterious organization created half-human, half-Yoma warriors known as the "Silver Eyed Witches" or "Claymores", after the huge claymore swords they carry. They are detested by humanity however necessary.
The story begins with a young boy, Raki, who has lost everything in a Yoma attack, and the Claymore, Clare, who is generally detested by society. Throughout the series, Clare and Raki show their deeper qualities, powers and Clare's never ending devotion to the goal she swore to fulfill in her childhood.

Claymore is a Shounen, Action, Adventure anime in a Fantasy, Medieval setting. The story basically revolves around a specific Claymore "Clare" and her companion "Raki" as she goes from town to town, slaying monsters known as Yoma.
From the beginning the story is very easy to follow. You have Claymores (strong female warriors) and it is the job of these Claymores to slay the Yoma. The story basically follows Clare as she travels to slay these Yoma, which get increasingly difficult to defeat as the story goes on. As a character Clare is developed so well that your opinion of her will change constantly throughout the series. Knowing her past before she became a Claymore and her current self makes it hard to believe that those two are the same person. What's disappointing is that some of the other main characters are not as developed as Clare but at least they produced good enough results. Raki being the main supporting character is really the only annoying character and doesn't really bring much to the story. As the story goes on it changes completely from the original hunt and kill Yoma, onto a more interesting and compelling storyline with amazing battles.
The fight sequences are just amazing and what helps it is the superb animation quality, thanks to "Madhouse" (also producer of "Death Note"). A lot of detail is put into every aspect of animation, with amazing lighting effects, detailed backgrounds and realistic character models. It is great to see all this kept during the bloody fight sequences however I do feel some corners are cut which just loses some of its essence (e.g. when the arms move so fast it does the typical DBZ speed attacking effect).
The music is fantastic with a magnificent orchestral score mixed in with some wicked bass and rockin' tunes. It's perfect in setting the right atmosphere; drama or action, it does well in both however there are times, mostly during fights, that the music can get a little messy.
Overall this ends up becoming an interesting anime that actually brings something new to the saturated shounen anime market. It manages to stay true to the manga storyline throughout however the story ends up moving at a very fast pace but the benefit of this is that every episode counts and there isn't any screen time wasted by: pointless flashback, training episodes, prolong deaths, etc. It's a shame that the anime deviated from the manga slightly near the end, which is bad news to manga fans and it means there's less chance for it continuing.

Claymore is one of the most intelligent shonen anime that has come out in recent years. It has a pretty good, though rather classic plot of revenge. For a story synopsis go to animenfo.com. In any case, here's my review up to eps 14.
We see that the main character, Clare, does grow throughout the series so far, which means in each episode something happens and she is changed by it, and through out the story arcs, she is either benefited by the events or suffers the consequences whether she wants or not. I can talk about this character as if she were a real life person precisely because the balance of things that happen to her - I don't mean that she gets exactly half good and half bad as she journeys, but I mean she has her good days; she has her awesome days; she has her awful days, and she has her almost dying days. She grows through it all.
She has suffered a ton in her life time, and as a woman, she's seen a lot of dark side in men. Yet she's still on the job, partially because she doesn't want to quit. There are rules bounding her but we can assume that she can leave and go in hiding if she desired. But she doesn't quit her job. Why is that?
I think she has a sense that the rules of the game are to be followed, maybe not completely to the T, as sometimes she goes out and bend some of them, but not breaking them. There are priorities over organizational rules, after all, especially when it comes to saving a life and nurturing it. She learns that from her previous experience when she was in the position of being nurtured. However, at the same time, she nurtured the person who was supposedly the strong one (this happen when she was young and wasn't a Claymore). Something within Clare made her a strong person even before she grew up to become a Claymore - she recognized pain and suffering similar to hers.
Despite all the things happened to her, she's still going strong. She risks her life and being discovered (she's currently hiding) when she sees her comrades desperately need help; even though she's not quite powerful yet and her opponents-would-be are extremely powerful - a classic component of shonen anime. Here, I'll go into the shonen stereotypes.
Claymore is a shonen show with its classic plots - revenge, skilling up/powering up, mentors who train, and someone that comes out and help during the most desperate-to-the-urgency-of-death situation (hopefully only one). The biggest and the most obvious twist here is that all the strong characters are women - all the roles that would've been filled by men in the classic shonen (Saint Seiya comes to mind) are filled by women in this case. What marks it apart from a lot of other shonen is the fact that it doesn't drag on and on and give out mindless battles or tournaments. That means everyone that the main character has to fight has a good reason to be there, and some of them do indeed come back later, like many shonen shows, but not because they just do, or they have some simple reason like they just want to come back for another round, but these characters all have their reasons, some forced, some by choices, and some by both.
What happens earlier definitely affects what happens later. Friends and enemies are made later because of earlier events and encounters (this anime would make a great RPG).
Because the plot doesn't drag - the anime came out when the manga is already on vol. 13 or 14 (I can't remember), which means they have a wealth of materials to work with, the arcs are well developed and I don't see any unnecessary fillers (at least not yet, I can't remember if this is slated to be a 26 eps series), each episode does something to move the story forward. That's what a good storyteller should do. In addition to that, the important characters are distinctive and form deep impressions, the unimportant characters mark their short impression and then they're forgotten and don't take too much of the viewer's attention for too long. All these are important to a good storytelling.
This show only suffers a little bit of cliches from shonen anime - one occurrence of ex deus machina. It also has other classic shonen characters like mentor that takes the disciple for training when the disciple has been badly defeated, sociopath characters, sidekicks, and a couple other smaller ones. But these traits get developed the right way, pile those with good character developments and an intriguing overall plot with good small arcs and you've got an awesome storying that retells the classic revenge in its own way.
As for the other elements such as Art, animation, sound - it's production I.G. and I'll leave those for others to review, because...
this review is too freakin' long! I commend you for reading this far. Good job! =D
P.S. I obviously like it. For the reason see above! =D

Two hardcore hack and slash shows. While Berserk is most likely more on the "darker" side of the two, both are still definitely a guy's "beat the crap out of them" type of show. Brutal, but each has a touch of emotion here and there.
Somewhat similar in atmosphere and style, though the plots are quite different. Both feature a quiet lead with an enormous sword, plenty of hacking and slashing in a medieval setting, and a cruel and brutal environment. Berserk is particularly harsh, but living in Claymore's world is certainly no cakewalk.
Claymore has the closest feel to Berserk, Claymore is a shounen, yet it feels like something so much more... or to put in a better way, Claymore is the Shounen Berserk.
Your slash-and-hack-gory-ish series has just gotten better. Both compares similarly because as it inclines to shounen fans alike. Awesome sword fight scenes, good artwork and a deep storyline which makes Claymore a good series to follow if you like Berserk before. A sure must anime for those who want gore to the max and of course...BLOOD! ^__^
Both heavy action series with an excellent story and superb character development .
Take everything that made berserk amazing.... its amazingly human characters and their development, its dark fantasy universe, its sheer brutality, and its non linear storytelling, and place all of them in another series aimed at a wider audience with a female lead... you get claymore
Both are set during the medieval period, both have very dark stories. Although the plots of the two differ considerably, the fact that both are dark fantasy series set during medieval times is more than enough reason for a fan of one to try the other.
Violence, Demons, Absolutely badass main characters, big swords.
Good story and characters. Same sort of action and adventure. Both shows are for a mature audience.
Fantasy, supernatural, swords. Both have amazing characters and story.
The Berserk and Claymore universes have very similar atmospheres, alot of action and alot of demon killing.
Claymore and Berserk both have very good storylines as well, and grow increasingly more interesting every episode.
If you like dark fantasy anime like Claymore, I heartily recommend Berserk. It's a (much) darker medieval anime with a really engaging plot. If you gave Berserk a miss the first time round or are new to anime (but loved Claymore), I think you'd be remiss to not grab a copy of Berserk :)
berserk and claymore may have some similar stuff(big swords, demon slashing, etc.) but they are in no way comparable, both storys are so different like bananas and oranges, berserk is much more anime than claymore but still, claymore is good enough to recomend it.
They both fantasy action titles, rated mature, and they include both demons.
Monster fighting, not always ends well, gore scenes, dark ambience
Medieval time setting is the standardfor both. Higher powered supernatural beings with a stake in the outcome is also a shared attribute. Both treat blood loss as no big deal and both thrive on despair when the chips are down. Big swords and a mercenary type attitude are a constant in both.
Both shows adapted from an amazingly well drawn manga. Berserk follows Gutz who weilds a greatsword and fights demons who are lured to him in an attempt to track down the five demon lords. Claymore follows Claire who wields a claymore and hunts down yoma (pretty much demons) to track down a immensely strong yoma called Priscilla.
Both titles have tragic heroes with big swords who slay demons and struggle with their own humanity.
Pretty much the same with the sword fights and supernatural/fantasy setting.
Both got hardcore sword-fight action, plot twists and medieval Europe settings.
Medieval swordplay drama horror the best kind for anime
The main similarity between these two animes is they both have a dark, at times depressing mood and take place in the medieval era. They also both contain a lot of gore, action and demons. Berserk surpasses Claymore in that it has a greater variety and better development of its characters. Berserk also has a powerful underlying romance, similar to Claymore.
Time period and swordplay
Another Great fighting anime with growth and depth shown in characters
As noted by others, there are many similarities, and if you liked one, you'll almost certainly like the other. Both take place in a dark fantasy world and medieval setting. Both focus on a character who lost someone dear to them and is on a journey to find the killer, a being with awesome power evolved beyond the main character's current ability to defeat. Death, fighting, and monstrous powers and beings abound.
Both have Anti-Social characters who fight monsters with Huge swords
in a dark and "mature" world. Blood, Gore and Sexual Themes are present in both,
although more frequent in Berserk.
Both has main hero with huge sword, lots of blood and armies of foes slised in a salami
Os dois animes possuem várias lutas utilizando espadas, as épocas são parecidas e os personagens tem presença marvante.
Both have many addictive and great characters (and, maybe, Teresa is even better then Guts!), well animated fights and are very-very attractive in general. But that's all, though Berserk is really the most (maybe, even only) similar to Claymore.
You gona love this one!It has the same atmosfaire and brutal sword fights that will leave you satisfied! Blood, violent scenes are on the plus side.It even has the same disappointing ending!
Two animes with medieval theme and supernatural monsters. They got very much in common.
both character have same profession as mercenaries, traveling from town to town their face strong opponent but they manage to survive and complete the task. They have also using big sword to slay their enemies and they also strength beyond normal human.a lot action in this series it's not boring to watch.I recommended you to watch this anime.if you like action series.
Both shows involve a powerful main character cutting down every demon in their path. Both shows have a very depressing atmosphere and are very dark in terms of the story. I enjoyed Claymore more, but Berserk is definitely the darker and more violent of the two.
Both are bloody and hardcore fights anime's while having feelings as a topic.
Lots of gore, violence, battles.
blood, demons, great story and ofc blood... need I say more??
well from the splatter and fights side berserk is kind of similar to claymore
Both series deal with inhuman fighting power and have strong supernatural elements. Claymore has mostly female fighters while berserk has mostly male fighters. This being the primary difference they are otherwise fun to watch for action and an interesting plot. Of the two I would say Claymore is better because of a few problems with Berserk such as its brevity (unlike the eternally long manga) and some artistic oddities some people can't deal with (one enemy takes the form of a serpent with a man's face inside its mouth which is dumb). Other than that berserk is a good series although it has a somewhat tragic ending as opposed to the ending of claymore.
mostly similar to its brutality
Lead character in both series want revenge. Lots of fighting, action, drama, violence and other mature content.
Both are filled with great sword fights, and gory deaths. These series are action packed and are very enjoyable. Plus the main characters, Guts and Clare carry big ass swords, and how can you go wrong with a big ass sword?
Strong main hero swinging a huge sword around. The only difference is Guts from Berserk only kill humans in the anime and only near the end those he get to hack monsters, though the manga focuses more on the monster aspect later on. In Claymore she too hunts monsters, she's basically a female version of Guts.
Lots of action and blood, good story that keeps you hooked, and both main charactors carry a big ass sword.
These shows share the same atmosphere and they have similar animation style. Although, in my opinion there is a huge gap in quality between these two series, I know that there are a lot of people out there who loves Claymore, unlike me. They consist of similar fighting styles, in addition.
Well their is what the eye see's big swords, monsters, and lots of blood. Then their is what you may feel which was for me pleasantly unpleasant watching both protagonists learning how to care for others which knowing their pasts is difficult for them. Above all what both shows have made me feel is a sense of hopelessness that no other anime/movie has cast upon me, and with the death of hope is the birth of fear.
Both of these shows are violent with the theme of revenge. Berserk imo has less gore but more nudity compared to Claymore. I also find Berserk to have the better story but both are very enjoyable dark fantasy anime.
Same gore/big swords/dark feel/people joining up, both are about the same length and they both have a manga that's still running.
I loved this THE MOST of all Sword fighting animes. Hmm maybe it's just because of Clare :D
While it may not be as epic as Berserk it's still has some similar premises along with it's own original flair. Claymore is the story of Clare seeking revenge on a demon named Priscilla but who can become more demon like with every battle similar to Guts. This series contains awakened beings similar to apostles but are battled by claymores; female warriors that kick ass while looking hot as hell. As a shonen this series is really a good movement of women characters where the men are the useless ones. While its just as violent there's no rape or fucked up shit as in Berserk but Claymore is still very good.
Both are mature, revenge themed stories taking place in medieval settings.

Well, the main storyline is more or less different, but the way the characters are drawn very similarly, as well as action scenes and blood. Also Blood+ is a dark anime and so is Claymore, so it would be good for those who like/love dark anime (sorry for stating the obvious....) Anyway both of them have very deep storylines so I thought that people who like Blood+ would like this, because I think of Claymore when I think of Blood+.
These two series have so many similarities that each of them can be considered an "alternate" version of the other... They're both top-notch anime series, so I'd say watch them both and witness the similarities for yourself
Both feature girls/women who has a hack-n'-slash fest, killing monsters with their swords.
Blood+ has some similar elements to Claymore, such as the relationship between a helpless "brother"/"sister" and a cold-blooded killer of the opposite gender, that greatly sways either person's actions during the course of the show. In a sense , it's partially Claymore in reverse, here the purebreds go after the half breeds, but what matches these two up the most would be the high level of action, gore and dark mood that stays overcast most of the time. You'll probably understand once you start watching it.
the girl w/ the blood of the monster their killing, sounds familliar is it?
Hot kick-ass girls with big swords chopping up monsters!!!
it has fighting scenes, protecting someone, fighting monsters, and others things you like in them:)
Girl as the protagonist who fight bunch of monsters.
Blood+ and Claymore have something in common, and that is both are killing off monsters. They are both dark and gory. Blood+ has a longer story than Claymore but nonetheless they are still jampacked with blood spilling monster slashing scenes.
they both portray women who fight abominations that live off human flesh or blood warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! violent anime but cool ha ha
love the action shows women who can kick ass!^^
both bloody anime and both main char of the story weilds a sword. basicly the same... saya vs chiopterans ... and clare vs Yoma's but claymore has more blood sheds and more violence compared to blood+
Both series are full of blood and female characters that are very skilled with sharp metal objects ;)
It has monsters and killing/blood as well.
Monsters fighting monsters. Sword wielding female protagonist fighting very bloody battles against the grotesque as she tries to discover herself and protect what's important to her. Lots of blood, dismemberment and decapitations, mixed in with some camaraderie and family bonds.
"OMGZ THEY ARE BOTH GIRLS WHO ARE NOT FULLY HUMAN AND BOTH HAVE SWORDS AND KICK THE SHIT OUT OF MONSTERS OMG RUN ON SENTENCES NO PUNCTUATION!"
- Almost every 16 year old with a keyboard in America.
However, there's some truth to the above statement but I'd like to get into Blood+. If you really liked Blood+ and thought the story was riveting, loved the gore and the fight scenes, and loved Saya as a bad ass monster killing female main character, then you'll absolutely LOVE Claymore. Now, what I said about Blood+ is giving it a little too much credit. Don't get me wrong, I liked the show, but I just felt that Saya didn't take charge enough for me(at least till the end) and I cringed at a lot of the dialog. There was also just way many too cliche moments and typical "feel good story" music during the first half of the series. It's at least underwhelming for an anime with an R rating.
Claymore's R rating on the other hand is well deserved. It is WAY more violent and bloody than Blood+ and the langue is a lot more coarse as well. Claire and Saya both come into their own a bit midway into the shows but Claire has a lot more depth to her in my opinon and is a lot more entertaining. Both girls are trying to rid the world of monsters, even though they are both types of monsters themselves.
All and all, If you liked Blood+ and don't mind a shorter series with more violence and swearing, then chances are you'll love Claymore. If you watched Claymore first and are expecting a lot from Blood+, chances are you'll be let down a bit, but will still enjoy the series.
Action packed, gory, strong female lead characters, and story driven. Both use swords and are related to mythical beasts.
Both anime have a lot of blood, monsters, and fighting.
Same kind of plot evolvement and just as good
These two series are like siblings with many similarities that can be drawn upon.
Both Claymore and Blood+ involves a lot of action dealing with the supernatural specifically demons. The main female protagonist (who both have skills in swordsmanship) in both series are literally weapons with extraordinary abilities. The only thing that keeps them from going insane are their companions. Additionally, both series' main female protagonist also has a dark past that is filled with tragedies and sorrow.
Both series also involves organizations with their own purposes and enemies with dark ambitions..
Both series contain action, drama, blood, gore, and gets darker and darker as more episodes progresses; a pleasing series to the audience into the darker side of the hack-and-slash genre.
While every show is unique in their own way, Claymore and Blood+ have a myriad of similarities that will make a fan of one show, a fan of the other. For starters, both shows revolve around the concept of monsters that consume flesh and blood. They are painted as evil, but in both shows the main characters are also connected to these vicious monsters they seek to kill. The connection is genetics though it is applied differently for each show. Besides that main concept, both shows involve powerful heroines who wield swords. They develop in different paths, as one show is about remembering one’s identity while the other is vengeance. Both shows are hack and slash, though Claymore is by far more violent, bloody and intense. Dire injuries are inflicted regularly as many monsters and people are killed, while Blood+ takes the killing down a notch. Blood+ also has weaker moments when it comes to killing due to the dialogue, but I found myself able to look passed that due to the differences in the atmosphere of each show.
If you are going from Blood+ to Claymore, a more aggressive and intense show awaits you, while the transition from Claymore to Blood+ can be a letdown only if you thrive on scenes filled with gore. The length of Blood+ is wonderful as Claymore is shorter and deviates from the manga at the end absolutely destroying the show for manga readers. Either way, if you are a fan of one show, you will most likely be a fan of the other as the action in both are very entertaining.
Protagonist are both vampire like monsters
Main characters are genetically evolved and use swords
Genres are horror and dark action
Goal: Rid the world of the evil monsters
Character abilities: supernatural strength and speed
