SynopsisA remake of the 1999 TV series of Hunter x Hunter based on the manga by Togashi Yoshihiro.
A Hunter is one who travels the world doing all sorts of dangerous tasks. From capturing criminals to searching deep within uncharted lands for any lost treasures. Gon is a young boy whose father disappeared long ago, being a Hunter. He believes if he could also follow his father's path, he could one day reunite with him.
After becoming 12, Gon leaves his home and takes on the task of entering the Hunter exam, notorious for its low success rate and high probability of death to become an official Hunter. He befriends the revenge-driven Kurapika, the doctor-to-be Leorio and the rebellious ex-assassin Killua in the exam, with their friendship prevailing throughout the many trials and threats they come upon taking on the dangerous career of a Hunter. |

Well, half a year later, I am here to revisit this review. I've now passed the 52 episodes like the other ongoing viewers, and with that I watched the Phantom Troupe Arc.
Story:
(Revisited)
The beginning arc of the series offers some character introductions and a whole lot of explanation about the world of HxH. The in-depth story lines are less visible, but are already being treated in the background. At this time in the story, it's in the form of remarks and interactions between characters. The further this Hunter Exam arc progresses, however, the more individual stories are being fleshed out. Whether these are grudges, family problems, or simply a quest to find someone. The very end of the Hunter Exam neatly flows into the next arc, which instantly takes a further dive into the story behind one of our main characters. It's one of the things HxH does differently from some other Battle Shounen series, the flow from one arc to the other in the story (up till this point) feels very correct.
As such, it's evident that this series is more fleshed out than most Shounen series.
Story: 8/10 (I had a hard time not giving it a 9, for the sole reason of the series not being finished yet, by which Story is harder to judge than any other factor.)
Art:
This is something that stood out from the very first scene. Hunter x Hunter has this very unique style, which can make characters seem more like cartoon characters, yet they come out of a manga. Big noses and lips, a lot of aspects could be called 'old-school'. However, it is still performed in a way that makes it amazing to look at. Background rendering, lighting and shading, special effects to add atmosphere to scenes... The animation and art is simply top-notch. Now I have seen animes made by studio 'Bones', and I have seen the famous 'Hellsing Ultimate', so to deserve a 10 for art in my book, is pretty hard.

Sound:
I really had to get used to the background music. At first the style appeared to me as weird, but soon enough I loved it. The happy, energetic themes during the normal situations (especially) fit Gon. However, the music can change altogether to become more like traditional drumming, something that manages to create heavy tension every time I watch it. Situations where the anti-hero (because I can't call him an Antagonist) Hisoka goes insane are perfectly portrayed through the amazing soundtrack. Dangerous situations, which could burst into action at any given moment are perfectly portrayed because of the amazing soundtrack. Sound effects in the background can suddenly boom through your boxes or headphones, in an impressive fashion. Voice acting is great, and the mad, happy or insane sides of characters are correctly given life.

Character:
Logically, a series focused on Hunters needs an adequate amount of character development. And this is easily noticed as nearly every character will have some special trait, something weird, or threatening. Some have a clear amount of intelligence, another acts on impulse, and yet another will be patient and observes the situation. However, there is one thing that bugs me, a pet peeve I developed because of 'Naruto'. Loads of characters will think or say that Gon has something special, etcetera, etcetera. This is something that can throw their character into disarray, because no person thinks the same way. Regardless, there are a bunch of characters that stomp on that statement as if it were an ant. I'm speaking of the Phantom Troupe arc. The arc took your expectation of Gon and Killua being powerful, and threw it down a cliff. These characters are, at times, obviously aware of their own dominance and power, and will act likewise. The mere tension their presence creates in the series has an amazing impact.

Enjoyment:
Enjoyment is an aspect that requires the combination of all the other aspects, but most importantly, requires them to be in-sync. This case is performed brilliantly. The series is dark when it needs to be dark, because the characters are, the soundtrack is, the lighting is, and the dialogue is. In fact, the tension in this series is so strong that even when nothing is happening and only a simple conversation takes place I am often glued to the screen. There aren't many anime that will make somebody come closer to the screen just because he is so focused. This series manages it every time.
Enjoyment: 10/10
Overall: 10: Masterpiece.
An anime and manga labeled as battle. Not a single typical shounen battle took place. Yet this series is so action filled and amazing. Dialogue and story play a bigger role in this series than it does in nearly any other battle shounen, and not only in the form of explanation, but also logical deduction.
EDIT: Somebody came up to me to flame me for rating this so high without watching the original series or reading the manga. He blocks any incoming messages so I found his message to be completely unnecessary. Whatsoever will I state the following: People should be able to enjoy and rate a remake without having to watch the original. If you don't like that, don't flame me for having opinions. Thank you.

ITS FREAKING GOOD!!
I'm pretty tired of these reviews saying "Oh it doesn't like up to the 1999 version" and crap. Before I begin let me note that I have seen SOME of the 1999 version and ALL of the manga. I won't really be doing a comparison cause its not only unfair as I haven't seen all of it(and don't really plan to) but because people before me have done so already.
Story: Its a remake, I.E. the same thing. Gon sets out to become a Hunter in order to find his dad and to find out whats so great about the job that he'd abandon his only son. I saw the first 5 episodes of the first sereis *and other random eps* so when Episoe 1 was coming I thought "Oh I'm gonna get a flash back ep first." To my surprise there was none and we got the entire boat bit. I will admit they made mito a character you could give less for and they should have given a flashback on Kaito since he's important later on, But I did enjoy that we could see Leorio and Kurapika meeting gon sooner than I thought. The story in this version is moved pretty quickly, Which I had mixed feelings on. It did admittingly feel rushed at some parts and in episode 6 they axed out my favorite part of the second exam, the sushi making contest and didn't even spare Kurapika's 'I'M LIKE LEORIO?!' face, and that pissed me off. so props to the old version there. However thanks to this we can get to the good parts of the hunter exam and on towards the parts that made hunter x hunter as a series great*Looking forward to seeing all the arcs* Plus the pace has slowed down as of late as its taking a while to get through the Prison trial, but its doing a much better job of keeping consistant to the monga *THE ACCTUAL CORE VERSION* than some of its previous episode and the old version.
Art: It dosn't matter what you thought of this version compared to the 1999 one, this version art is SUPRB. I understand it was 1999 when they made the last one so of course now it'd be a big improvement but damn, madhouse knows how to do its job. At first it's brightness concerned me as the series gets darker and darker later on, but now I don't mind it, as Hisoka STILL comes off as creepy ecpecially in episode 10 where he shatters the hopes for revenge by that x examiner. The character designs are pretty well done as well, only the small gripe being thay made kurapika's look too much like a girl, however in the old version Gon's hair was too short, so its a eye for eye.now for movement, the animation, Its freakin amazing, seeing the shows first real fight, I was left amazed at how well done it was and I look forward to ALOT of the series future fights. Also its nice to see this when the manga's sketchy style dosn't do it for you but what'cha gonna do when your SO MANY ARCS AWAY!?
Sound: Alright, I gotta say its good, but just not for this series. I really didn't like the other versions either but oh well. The sound did kinda do it for me in episode 10 when Hisoka was fighting, but I don't really like the idea of cheerful orchestra music for the seires main themes. The fact that there IS a orchestra does say something about the future but for now it doesn't work. as for the openings and endings I like them, it took a while for the ending to get to me but it did and I'm ok with the current OP As I like the energy put into it where as the other version made me want to do the opposite of the title and go to bed.
Character: are perfectly kept intact. As its keeping with the manga, of course the characters would be kept the same. While gon is easily the simplest character of the show if not in anime history, He's likabe. most characters would show angst or give off a fake "I don't care" front, but he shows the absence of his father with complete curiosity. His cheerful and full of life personality shows and if you don't have a problem with simple characters, you'll more than likely like gon. Leorio is my personal favorite because I love comic relief characters and boy does he do his job here! Some may find his tendency to get pissed off at everything annoying but I find it pretty funny especially in the majority rule where he is perfectly within his rights to get pissed off. Of course Leorio's gotta look a little cool too, its nothing compared to his recent actions in the manga but His bet to determine wheter the blue guy*which was kinda weird* was alive or not was pretty cool, for his standards anyway. Kurapika is as dark as usual so thats cool. Killua is the same mischivious little assasin we all know and love and will soon later become one of the two darker characters compared to Gon and Leorio. They also do a good job of making him friends with Gon this early on seeing as the two will be working together alot later. Hisoka is pretty much the same, just look at the ending animation.
Enjoyment: I may already know whats gonna happen but I look forward to seeing every adaption each week. I each episode *except for episode 6* feels worth seeing as they follow the manga and the pacing while fast is acctually pretty ok once you get used to it.
Overall: Hunter x Hunter is pretty much the same here and it shows the only real issue to have with it is wether you put time in to make comparisons to the old version. I'm sure it was good, but Its Over, I'm already up to speed with its plot and since I have a choice to revisit what I read in the manga I'm gonna go with this. As for if you aren't up to date with the manga and haven't seen the old anime, You'll probably be prefectlyfine watching. If you have seen the old version then you'll either be fine with this and hope for the unanimated arcs to come, or just be like some of the other reviewers and gripe about "How it dosn't live up to-blah" So all in all Its a good series it just depends on how you look at it. read more

A well-thought-out story battle shounen which has not so much of battles but instead, more of tactics. Both are remakes with practically no fillers.
Both series have an innovative and entertaining argument. The characters are so real; they are not the typical kick ass character. For that reason, the strategies are the most important at the moment of fight.
Both are remakes of two of the greatest shounen anime out there. What makes these two shows stand out from the majority of the shounen genre is that they have well developed characters along with a consistent plot. Also, there are absolutely no fillers in either of them.
Both FMA: Brotherhood and Hunter x Hunter (2011) are series that have great story plots involving many characters. The characters themselves are well developed as each episode progresses. Additionally, there are themes of vengeance, friendship, honor, and pride that are explored many times throughout both series.
The main male protagonist from both series has a cheery attitude but is always willing to help others in need by putting themselves in danger to protect in what they believe in.
There is also a fictional dangerous group in both series who serves as primary antagonists. Among those antagonists are characters who have diverse personalities.
These two series are considered shounens but are presented in a different way that is appealing and holds strong sense of value through its plot development. There is also great humor, catchy scenes/dialogues, and emotional moments that are memorable.
Both are shounen with darker, more mature themes. In both stories, the main characters are on a journey to find something and meet many different (interesting) kinds of people along the way.
Both are about friendships and brotherhood (duh), are actually are very, very good shonens (some of the best anime overall), and don't have many typical/cliche moments.
Oh and one more things: Characters actually die!
Remakes to shounens with an actual story, a good plot. The animation Bones and MH offered is the definition of "Top notch", the characters are unique and interesting. stories and arc are well-written. Logical fights. No Nakama power-ups crap. Development of the story and characters are in the right path.
Both are remakes that don't have fillers or meaningless fighting and rely more on strategy and wits.
Great story with no cliche stuff. Both similar as they talk about friendship/brotherhood.
Equivalent exchange is an important aspect of the story.
Being both not-just-regular shounen, they're pretty much similar in the way they use the element of suspense, which is marvelous in both of them. Also alike is the use of comedy. They also resemble each other in the way they treat of matters such as values and life itself, and each of their corresponding main characters have a particular personal goal. Oh, and they've both had a previous animation work before they had even ended (Fullmetal Alchemist) or gone far ahead of the script (Hunter x Hunter).
Personally, this are my two favorite shounen.

Personally i'm a huge OP fan since more than a decade and i have to say that it took me a while before actually giving a try to HxH 'cuz i wasn't sure if i would've liked it.. But. Woah against my expectations i really did like it more than i thought! Truth is that after i gave it a try, i couldn't stop watching it.
The more i was seeing it and the more it was giving me the same feeling that OP gives me. They have the same vibe and have the power to let you enjoyed more and more, this way your curiousity level also grows bigger and bigger by each episode. They really share a lot in common:
• first off: well, the genres, as you can see they both are Shonen, Adventure, Action, Superpowers genres.
• both main charas would look the "typical protagonists of a shonen serie" but they actually are able to surprise you, the more you get to know about them and their personalities.
• interesting enough, both protagonists' fathers seems to play a very important role (i would even dare to say "legendary"), plus obviously are very strong and full of mystery
• both stories are about dreams and all that takes to our main charas to realize them. In HxH, obviously, Gon wants to become an hunter; while in OP Luffy wants to become a pirate, but not just a normal one, he wants to become THE pirate King. In addition, their companions of both Gon and Luffy also have an ambition/purpose they want to achieve as well.
• both series face the adventure with a long Journey splitted in many arcs.
• still, both give a huge importance to friendship.
• let's not forget to mention that both of them are quite cured, as of course, like the protagonists, also the other characters in the series are intriguingly developed for the best together with their backgrounds, their actions and personalities.
• last but not least, the presence of the superpowers genre won't disappoint you either because "from big powers come big... battles!", yes, indeed lots of cool battles and the more you find out of the stories and the more you'll get interested by the way to fight! In HxH we have the "Nen" (Aura) and in OP we have the "Haki" (Ambition).. you'll really be amazed by the coolness of the battles!
As you can see a lot of stuff is a common point for those two series.
The only thing left me to say is: I seriously recommend both series, because they both worth it.
If you liked one of them, you'll probably love the another as well.
Because afterall, they both share one last significant thing: greatness.
Both have a young boy leaving home to explore the world and become the best in it, they both have dreams they would sacrifice their lives for, happy positive outlooks on every situation, a selection of nakama/friends who they would do anything to protect.
Both have comedy, action, fighting, adventure, challenges, friendship and a feel good vibe.
If you're a one piece fan i definitely recommend hunter x hunter, and vice versa.
Gon and Luffy are very similar, both have a very happy and optimistic attitude even in dangerous situations. They're both young boys who want to achieve something great that is supposedly out of their reach.
Gon and Luffy have friends that are all very different, but work together to achieve their goals.
Both shows are very enjoyable and keep the audience excited and entertained.
Both genres include Shounen, Action, Adventure, and Super Power.
An ambitious and particularly strong young boy setting on a journey in a vast mysterious world, full of unexplored lands and strange creatures. There he meets friends and face various dangers and enemies in order to fulfill his dream.
I would say that One Piece is more about adventure while HxH is more about battle. Maybe HxH is a bit darker too, and OP funnier, but both are great shows.
Both are good adventure stories. Luffy searches for the "One Piece" aiming to be the Pirate King while Gon is searching for his father Ging, traveling with his friends for the sake of the adventure of being a "Hunter" like his father, as well as Luffy cruises with his peculiar crew around the world.
Plot in both works are well written by Oda and Togashi. Arcs are fresh and contains a lot of original ideas unlike most of the shounens out there.
Both are shonen anime that each have their fair share of adventures and fights. Both series have hyper, dumb, and funny main characters that are very interesting. The art in both series is also done very well.

Great story, not your shonen cliche story, each arc is quite different.
Both main characters (Luffy and Gon) are looking for something in particular and it is said at the beginning of the series.
Side characters have somewhat similar goals. This can be seen mostly with Leori and Nami since they both want money.
- both shows(in my opinion) start off decent and gets better and better to the point of awesomeness
-the concept of nen and haki are similar, plus both are introduced later on in the series
-its your typical shounen anime, protect your friends, get stronger
