I finished it this morning and... I dunno. I thought it was decent but nothing spectacular overall. I supposed its more of the fact that I didn't liked the characters in this as much compared to other Yuasa stuff. Wasn't expecting like anything remotely awesome but. Oh well. It's not a bad film overall, just disappointing.

I actually haven't seen The Tatami Galaxy, but this was definitely still fun to watch even without knowing all the references. I expected a very unique style, but it still caught me a little off-guard, although not in a bad way. I was smiling for most of the movie with how ridiculous and entertaining it all was.

I really liked how so many things were connected, and when Don Underwear started talking about his secret love, I lol'd so hard because I knew it had to be the director when he was cross-dressing 😂

The last musical was definitely my favorite scene. I was sad for Don Underwear when he found out the truth, rooting for the red-haired girl, started laughing when Don Underwear was fine with a guy, and then I was cheering along with the crowd at the final outcome :D That was such a fun sequence.

The female lead was really cute, and HanaKana was a great choice :)

Now I have to move The Tatami Galaxy up on my priority list!

The whole film blew me away. It definitely feels like a spiritual successor to Tatami Galaxy, which is exactly what I wanted it to be. The references were there but it never took over and the film still felt very much like it's own thing.

I just love this kind of storytelling and the way the film never slowed down and just got more and more crazy. But I can understand how some people won't like that. This was also one of the best looking films I've seen in a long while, the art design and animation was just stunning.

This is probably one of my favourite animated films of all time and so far the best film of 2017. It's a shame I couldn't see this on the big screen.

I liked the randomness of the first half a lot more than the second where the actual plot happened, I felt like it dragged a lot and in the end the director tried too hard to make it look weird/spectacular. It had some genuinely interesting moments and having some old characters back was nice, but still Tatami seemed a lot more focused and better for me. I don't know what is Japan's obsession with these theatrical vows of love (whatever they are called), but I find them annoying and cringy.

Pretty fun to watch, the art and soundtrack were amazing as expected.
Still the story could have been more "coherent" and the pacing could have been done better in the first act.
7/10.
Looking forward to lu over the wall.

If it wouldn't have been for the quite chaotic ending, I would have been willing to give it a 8. Damn, so close ;) I actually quite liked it, even though it's not my style of animation and it often got way to sidetracked with trying to focus on visuals (I do not mean sidetracks with B-characters and B-stories because that has been quite good. I mean the very weird dream sequence for example). The musical scenes were hilarious and my favorite

I waited a lot for that movie, and sadly I must say that I was disapointed.

The big problem I had watching it is that I felt it would have been soo much better as a serie than a movie.
Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei was a lot more speed, frantic, and was really good at holding attention because it's structure, fragmented as 20 min episodes , was perfect for that.
What I saw here was "4 episodes" (drink part - book searching - theater festival - cold and sick) put each side by side, patched together to do a movie.. and it made some scene dragging, the rythm wasn't there.
Other than that, there clearly was a problem with the way the main romance was handled (to the point of being completely overshadowed by the sub romance of "Don underwear") : the so called main guy lacked screen time in proportion to the girl and felt like a secondary character until the last part, so there was no excitation or real reason for the girl to go for him, felt too much "plot device to wrap things up" than anything else.

Well, that doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable, and the art and animation was a pleasure like in all the other works of Masaki Yuasa I saw. Too bad I didn't felt that "sparkle" this time around.

I freaked out when I saw Yuasa was going to make a movie in the same universe as Tatami Galaxy, my favorite anime without a doubt. And I don't know how I'm feeling about it, maybe I should rewatch it a couple times before giving it a score. It was funny to see how the worlds connected, not just between the series but in Night is Short itself. After watching, it felt a like the trailer was a lie, cause it took a long time before the main couple actually met. I'm curious to see how the story develops in the book, I bought it but the japanese seems quite complicated.

I was surprised to see that, it's not been a week after the subs released and 1k people watched it! #proud

And I'm in love with Yuasa's work, that's a fact

Man this movie is quite over-rated on Mal. Or maybe it just me. Either way I felt like it was waste of time. It was like a cheap Japanese version of a Disney movie with musical and fantasy theme but no character development. In addition, there is hardly any comedy apart from the weird art or animations and there is no romance even till the very end. Instead it seemed like the girl took pity on the senpai after everyone reminded her about him when she got bored of doing everything she wanted. It also feels like this movie was co-produced by the Kyoto cultural committee to promote tourism.

In Tatami Galaxy they were reseting time and changing the universe all the time, what structure, lol. Also, it was repetetive as hell, with tons of infodump. There everyone had their attention and arc, when it was necessary for them. Everything was connected, so of course sometimes they were with little attention.

Oh, and this was dragged and not TG? Did I get that right? because WHAT THE HELL. D:

Who cares about screen time, when we knew every necessary thing about Senpai... His psychology was elaborated and he was also proactive. That book was a reason for a girl. Fate was a reason for a girl. There was no reason in Tatami Galaxy and resolution came out of nowhere, iirc.

there is no romance even till the very end?
Eccentric King maybe? Theme of the movie maybe?

Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome ("The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl") is the latest from director Masaaki Yuasa, whose filmography includes such hipster classics as The Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong The Animation. At a wedding reception, we're introduced to the spunky female lead, Kurokami no Otome, voiced by Kana Hanazawa, drinking heavily to "plunge into the world of adulthood." On the other side of the room the male lead, who's only referred to as Senpai, is still smitten by Kurokami after meeting her in his club during their junior year.

Like The Tatami Galaxy, The Night Is Short is an unabashedly absurd psychological adventure. We meet an array of eccentric characters in whimsical, surrealistic settings. Through their conversations, insights, and songs??, the story is gradually unraveled. The animation director, Itou Nobutake, a long-time Yuasa collaborator, helps in bringing a minimalist yet carefully conceived aesthetic to this movie, serving up heaps of eye-porn for art and illustration enthusiasts.

My face is still sore from smiling so much. What a splendid title to end the year with.

A solid 8/10 for me.

What long night they had, from partying, to eating spicy food for a book, to a moving school festival and everyone except her getting the cold.
The johnnies in the end were hilarious.

I loved this movie and its animation, the romance was not that good but it was very nice to watch.

So 7/10.

I see the chaos and randomness I loved so much in Tatami Galaxy got doubled alongside its production value. I enjoyed most of the movie particularly the 1st part with the drinking and the eccentric king but I have to say the ending lacked impact because I didn't see enough of a reason for kurokami no otome to suddenly fall in love with our protag. I really wish the ending could give me the same satisfaction I felt with Tatami Galaxy as much as it tried.

I'm not sure why no one has appreciated the coming of age themes in this movie. It is literally the centerpiece of the movie, and not the romance. Best anime movie I've seen in a long while.

It was very fun movie. Everyone makes the obvious reference to Tatami Galaxy because of Yuasa but you should consider Uchouten Kazoku as well since I've seen some of it in this movie as well. Morimi Tomihiko bizarre and fun stories are a great fit for Yuasa's style and I genuinely can't think of any negative aspect regarding this movie but mostly praise for the story, characters and animation making this movie so entertaining. I also liked the choice of it being a movie where everything is more compact and immediate than a whole series that might feel dragged out (like Tatami Galaxy was starting to feel around ep 8).

Surprise surprise this is the first (and only one for now), even after watching big titles like Steins Gate, Psycho pass, Shinsekai yori or Bakemonogatari, time I liked Hanazawa Kana and felt some personality in her voice. One might say it has to do with not being a fan of those shows but I am watching 3-gatsu no Lion and liking it a lot yet she voicing Kawamoto Hinata doesn't tell me anything.

Dizzying, surreal experience, just like you are in a drunken state while watching the movie, love Yuusa's direction. The main character felt a bit of plot device until the end, and a bit of rough start, but overall a really fun journey for a movie.

As wacky and fun as The Tatami Galaxy. I could feel a lot of vibes coming from Tatami Galaxy as well as Uchouten Kazoku (like seriously). Dang KanaHana's performance was amazing in this movie! The coming of age themes of the movie were pretty great as well. 8/10. Btw when exactly does this take place in the Tatami Galaxy timeline? Seems like it took place just recently since Jogasaki is still in school but then again, there's an Ozu love child in this film

Finished this movie while ago. This movie was another interesting Yojouhan show and I found this story is bit simpler and easier to follow and also over-the-top hilarious at most comedic moments. But my main problem of this was movie (which I cant help comparing with the YST show) that MC's voice was kinda weird.. and most importantly the last romance resolution felt forced to me. But still overall it was really good movie because the fun factor was really way too high, 8/10.

Also imo its best to watch after finishing YST because the cross-over characters were just something fabulous to see!

I initially thought that the movie would be all about drinking and had my suspicions on how quickly everything was wrapping up with the drinking contest so it was a nice surprise that there are other themes as well. It was a very eventful night with lots of wacky moments and colorful visuals. Not to mention that I love coincidental comedy where everything somehow connects in the end.

The movie overall was really amusing, with the guy drunkenly eel-walking and vomiting on Todo's porn and the realization that the School Festival Coordinator was the Apple Girl the moment "she" turned up being the funniest parts for me. The Guerilla Theater manager who had a crush on Don Underwear's song really had that Bohemian Rhapsody tone because I can definitely hear the "Mama!" part.

Having watched the Tatami Galaxy, it was such a pleasure to get to see many of its characters along with the main cast of the movie. Watashi and Akashi might've just gotten cameos in the background but Senpai and the Young Maiden's pretty much their spiritual successors. It initially looked like fate ordained that these two won't end up together but it's great to see otherwise. The little white train's reached her final stop ♥

The story feels a little mundane at first, as the Girl goes on a booze marathon for "reasons", meeting some down-to-earth (read: borderline uninteresting) characters along the way, and then out of nowhere changes her mind and goes on a quest for her childhood book. Meanwhile, the Senpai, who looks a little bit like Watashi, acts very much like Watashi when it comes to romance, with some extra bad luck on the side. The Tatami Galaxy art style (coupled with the movie's bigger production values) and the small details here and there are pretty much the main driving force of the movie at that point.

Things pick up a little after that. The musical part was kinda nice (and I was kind of rooting for a different ending than what we got), and the last act takes advantage of the many characters and little details seen throughout the movie. The ending is a little underwhelming:

Overall, it was an ok movie that could've been even better as a TV show, considering the talent behind it (though I can't say if the original source has enough material for one).
