Damn, Smile is a cold-blooded bastard when he snaps. He was totally ruthless to the coach at the end.

I also loved the soundtrack, especially during locker and robot scenes.

"Unleash your power."
"Your body is made of iron."
"No one can hurt you."

Sudden power ups are a staple in anime, but this was done really, really well.

The first episode was disappointing and I thought it was just another generic sports show.

But now this was a huge improvement.

The match was great. The tension was high as fuck and the visual presentation was fascinating. The coach is a cool lad and it was interesting to see Smile getting out of his shell.

For me this is one of the most promising anime of this season.
This artwork is simply eye robbering and the background settings and the script are amazing.
I just can't wait for the story to develop, but I know this is going to be awesome (I hope).

I don't know much about Ping-Pong rules and technical stuff, but Smile's duel seemed pretty powerful, and now that I mention it.. SMILE. What the hell of a character is he? It's fantastic.
I sympathize with him, because I'm similar, but whenever he talks the only word I have is epicness.

Peco is also good..
I like also the chinese guy!

Damn, that lame OP again? It's a shame because the song is fucking good, but doing a lazy montage is not enough, it feel bland.

The episode was really great though. Smile is an incredible character. He have no great qualities, except for is talent in ping pong. The rest is pure depressing stuff. The way he said to the coach that ping pong was only for him a way to pass time until his death. That's an horrible way to think about life, to lower it to a simple duty that you can't get rid of.

Wendo is mad because he want to challenge Smile but can't find him. This will probably be the ultimate showdown.

Peko was a bit absent this episode. Though, I think the star of the show is really Smile. It's funny how the two of them completely contradict the way to live of the other, yet they perfectly complete themself. Since Peko is competitive but lack of talent, it can be compensated by the lack of motivation of Smile and his great talent.

It was hilarious the part were the girl got stolen his diner by the falcon xD

Somehow this is turning into one of my favorites for the new season. I certainly didn't expect that. xD; I just love the intense passion and ridiculous characters. Smile has my interest with that disinterest while still sticking around his friend who he is so much better than.

The rare anime that puts style and substance on the same level of importance while allowing neither one nor the other to overshadow. I hope this show catches on as an example of something with truly creative visuals as well as a story that is still digestible and imminently interesting.

Ah so good.
I knew that there was a treat (a different one but a treat nonetheless) to be found here if going by the visuals and director alone but the dialogue is very witty and unforced.

All these lines like Koizumi referring himself as a patient husband type.
The way they both said that they better pick themselves up because there wasn't a futon on the floor.
Little things like that keep my attention glued onto the screen so effortlessly.

Speaking of I was surprised by Mr. Koizumi, he and Smile offered a subtle buildup all the way to intensity. The kind where you want to see more but the ED is already playing.

I can see sort of see the path Smile is taking... except now Peco is sort of a wild card for me.
As in he's already questioning his friend and he was rendered speechless after that.

Well at least Smile going against China will be something else and I can't wait!

My goodness was that a brilliant episode. This is easily the best sports anime airing at the moment, from what I have seen.

I'm really enjoying the focus on Smile. He's different from the usual protagonist of this kind of series in that he loves the sport but isn't motivated to be the best. Opens up a lot of interesting possibilities, and the visual imagery sprinkled throughout the entire episode only makes the exploration of his character more fascinating.

Love letter from Mr. Koizumi? You can't refuse it Smile. XD

The match was intense, Koizumi-sensei and Smile both are very good.

I think this show is good, episode 2 was much better so I should continue watching it.

I believe that unless you know for sure that you don't like a concept, you should keep exploring it. Whether it be characteristics of people or a genre of some sort, you never know if you don't like it until you've seen quality work corresponding to that genre. Keep exploring until you've found something you enjoy, or something of quality. Then you know what's bad, what's good, and what isn't for you.

Better pacing than the first episode, which was great, however this one was excellent. :)

One complaint that I do have is the fact that they did not fully explain (or really explain at all) the story of Butterfly Joe from the manga. They did include the shots of the butterfly and some of the lines, but the story itself was missing, which was a bit disappointing. Maybe they'll explain in the future episodes?

This is absolutely brilliant stuff. The writing, direction, choreography, dialogue...Just brilliant. And the people who criticize the animation show their abysmal ignorance. The animation is very good. What they don't like are the character designs/art which goes against the orthodox "pretty" look that 90% of anime goes for.

I did not read the manga, but I did watch the movie. I loved the movie and I think after watching two episode I think the anime is even better. I love how they used this old school style, I love the use of the kicking in soundtrack just at the right time.
Peco`s and Smile`s conversations are just hilarious. The robotic notions during the match were well put.
Kengo is some awesome dude as well.
The animation looks a little stiff, but when the matches are on, it becomes really fluid and expressive.
So much love for this anime. I should should up and watch episode 3.

I say. This episode was the bomb.

The first flashback sequence with the red hero was brilliant, and the BGM heavenly. What can I say, I'm a sucker for EDM soundtracks in my animu. Also this:

I mean, praising the Sun with one arm. How much cooler can you get?

China's training is srs bsnss tho

Koizumi v. Smile really got me pumped. I especially loved the contrast between the hot-blooded hero from the beginning which could represent something he wishes he could be (a lively and mighty righter of wrongs, able to fight back the villains -the bullies?-) and conjures up to give himself strength, and the cold blue machine which corresponds more to Smile's current state of mind.
I also appreciated the parallels between Smile's game (and by extension lifestyle) and the butterfly: soft, weak, and ephemeral. Something you'll just be passing by and forget the next day.
Looks like Koizumi sensei did get what he wanted from Smile in the end, even though his inner conflict is far from being resolved. But unleashing Smile's fighting spirit was the first necessary step to start working on that.

This show is definitely not (just) about Ping Pong. And that's great.

PS: Koizumi sensei's pronounciation of "burger" was arguably way worse than the boys' japanized version, tho.

Yo omg this episode was so hype!

The coach is funny as hell. Tsukimoto was badass in this episode.

It feels like there's nothing wasted in this anime like no wasted scenes and dialogue. Everything serves a purpose and I really felt that. A great example is at the end where Tsukimoto goes "I'm going on ahead"...so much impact to those words.

Enter the f**king hero!

That got to be the weirdest sensei i've seen in a long time...@-@

Still can't find an accurate word to describe this, it's simply...intriguing... how did i miss this?

Oh yeah, i'm not particulary fond of the 'sports' genre, and i always try to avoid it, but this anime... i dunno *-*

Also wanted to add that the dialogue in this ep was just brilliant, "There are some views you can't see until you stand at the top" favorite quote :3
