THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
They're really pushing the characters to their limits in this fight. Honestly, this episode does feels like a finale with the amount of psychology in that dark world.

Most noticably, Shingetsu has to fight but also overcome her own personal demons. Of course they throw in a theme song to make the battle look more impactful than usual. Heh, a pretty intense finale.

The ambiguous ending is gonna take me some time to process but I think the implication is meant to be that somehow, against all odds, Mangetsu exists in that world without magic and she’s the transfer student. Shingetsu’s appearance gets less faded when the transfer student enters the room, so I think if it is Mangetsu, she will be able to see her.

AOTS for me, nothing else came close to providing the emotional highs this gave me

This was this season's underdog, I'd put it as my AOTS probably. As always, the OST and the fight choreography and art were top-notch. The ending felt a bit confusing to me, trying to do too much in the little time left. I really liked the ending song. Overall, really decent series, a bit too contrived, with some less than stellar characterization of side characters, with some greatly executed psychological highs in-between; Anna's final fight, the camping scene, the 'The moon looks so pretty', these come to mind. I liked Granbelm for what it was, despite its flaws.

Crazy last episode , it make me shed a tear as per usual. I really like this ending even if it's a bit confusing. Granbelm was the underrated anime of the season.
Also for me, Granbelm was the best anime of this season even if there was a lot of good anime, i loved watching each episode every week. I will rate it 10/10 because of the chills and feelings i've got while i was watching it. The anime is maybe not a masterpiece but whatever, i enjoyed it and that the most important thing.

Must say, I'm really sad that there wasn't some undoing the bad magic, but it kinda fit with the theme of the anime, that even though bad stuff happens, we can't rewind anything yet there is still good out there. I really hope the transfer student is Mangetsu, but since this is an original, I don't think we ever get that confirmation. Not that I would be sad if there was an OVA showing that and their interaction as a bit of fanservice, and perhaps even some interaction with the rest of the cast, who still have some faint memories or feelings, similar to how Mangetsu's sister still called Nene Nene-chan rather than Nene-san...

Oh well. Unlike the others I don't think this is the anime of the season, of course. This season in particular was really strong, with some 7.5 average for me. Doesn't mean however, that this show was by any means bad. Quite the contrary. I think I said this like every week here, this anime is really great and underrated, especially when I remember that I went into this show, thinking it was some 5-6 show, which sounded from the synopsis like Madoka, Fate and Gundam hat some threeway siamese twin...
But the action looked really good, the story hat nice twists, a good message, surprisingly nice pacing, loveable (and hateable) characters, great soundtrack, nice seiyuu work, and just an overall great feel. I just can repeat, it is really despicable this show doesn't get the attention it deserves, especially since this is an original and the commitment the creators of the series should be rewarded. Instead of doing another shoutout to Vinland Saga, maybe Gigguk should do some work for this show instead. I mean, more people voted 7 points on Vinland, than there are people watching this show. Just... what the fuck, man, give art a chance, you know?!

I am a sobbing mess right now.

I see some people saying this is clearly not a masterpiece... but why can't it be?

The level of depth and symbolism throughout this entire series is absolutely mind-blowing.

10/10 and one of my all-time favorites.

Just wow. Incredible.

Scriptwriters surprised me for once. I was sure thay will resurrect all "dead" characters, but baring the implication that Mangetsu returned to existance, all erased mages were left as such.

So, despite the generic and quite boring first half this anime was above average for me.

I don't know how to feel now, the ending was decent, but I think it would have been better if this episode had been part of the previous one, cause this felt so short and kinda rushed, but anyway I will certainly miss watch this anime that at first seemed to make no sense but then showed great and real moments, and especially I will miss Shingetsu and Mangetsu.

Yikes, I almost forgot Granbelm was going to air one day earlier than usual.

Gotta say, I really liked this episode. It wasn't anywhere near as I expected, but still good nonetheless. This was one of the best anime this summer, so sad that it was overlooked. Props to the very talented team behind this work. I'm going to miss this show ;_;

I second you that.

For Mangetsu to come back and momentarily help Shingetsu, this feels like a call to redemption. If this is truly the call to seal the once-prolific magic and reset the world once again.

Same here. Ended on a decent ending, but overall the show is just a well-rounded, well-put one.

Am I the only one who noticed the Gundam references? First Shingetsu becomes a Newtype, them she kills Suishou the same way Kamille killed Scirocco... the last one is extra funny because Kamille's voice actor has been doing the on-the-next-episode previews for Granbelm.

Amazing in every way. Insane hand-drawn animation, amazing production, perfectly timed beautiful music, top-tier character development, awesome character and mech designs, voice acting was really on a whole other level, and a really really beautiful story. AOTS for sure, real contender for AOTY. Just fantastic.

As usual, when the opening song rises during a fight, you know the main character is gonna win in a epic way eheh : Granbelm did not break the rule.

I didn't really like the first episodes but then it turned out to be deeper & greater when things advanced forward. But in the end, the only personal negatives points I'd note are the Armanox design (I wasn't a great fan at all) and the colors used (especially in the last episode for example).

However it remains an anime with very well designed fights, nicely directed. The characters were interesting, their design as well like facial expressions, such as Anna's moments of anger. And obviously the voices : Suishou & Anna's voice actresses made a hell of a great job.

Lastly, the ending is a bit special, not so positive nor so negative. I think it can be interpretated differently : some viewers think the transfer students is Mangetsu but I ain't so convinced. Yeah that would be beautiful if it was true, meaning she eventually became part of this world instead of being a magic doll. But what disturbs me is Shingetsu's shape, it looked like she did not belong to this word.

Actually, if we consider Suishou's last words, warning her she'd end up being alone (to quote her "You'll be alone forever"), I feel quite lost. Like on the first hand I'd say she became immaterial and invisible for regular humans but on the other hand, she's been spotted eating on a bench & taking part of class. Nevertheless, there was no interaction with other characters so none can say for sure that she remains an entire human being.

That is just a theory but I do believe that the transfer student is Shingetsu herself, the one without magic power or any magic knowledge. And it would explain Suishou's last words of Shingetsu being alone forever (at first I said in my mind that she could make new friends easily but... if she's out of this world, she couldn't). So I seriously think Shingetsu is now a sort of magic remnant, the last Mage without any power.

After 13 episodes, Granbelm comes to an end. I have to say, this finale was not what I expected. It wasn't bad, I didn't hate it, but it wasn't as exciting and poignant as it could have been. This episode just makes it clear that this show was always Shingetsu's story, not Mangetsu's. That's not a bad thing, plenty of shows have killed the protagonist and replaced them with an entirely different character, but without Mangetsu to contrast her, Shingetsu is not that interesting, much like Suishou wasn't as interesting an antagonist as Anna was.

Also, this episode really wants to get us to sympathize with Shingetsu's choice to end all magic in the world. Why? Because Shingetsu said so? Because humanity is better off without magic? We only have Shingetsu's comments about how badly magic has affected mankind, but considering people like Anna were enthusiastic about magic, then it stands to reason that wizards could have learned from past mistakes. Even Suishou said that the problem isn't really magic, the problem was humanity's propensity towards violence and war. Magic was just a means to an end.

I wasn't a big fan of how the series ended the stories of certain characters. Mangetsu, Anna and Kuon are forgotten. They are gone forever. No one is left to mourn them or remember them. Sure, Shingetsu will remember them but that's a cold comfort to the viewers that have become attached to these characters and their struggles.

Not everything in this episode was bad, though. The final battle was incredible. Aoi Yuuki has an incredible villainous voice and I enjoyed the use of the opener for Shingetsu's final attack. It was a great way to end this show. I'm sad that this show largely flew under the radar during this season. It wasn't perfect, but it was still enjoyable and I definitely recommend it to any fan of the magical girl and mecha genres. Goodbye, Granbelm, you shall never be forgotten.

Mixed feelings over this ambiguous and Puella Magi-like finale, to be frankly honest.

It’s been roughly 5-6 hours that I’ve watched the episode but there are still tidbits here and there that are a bit hard to interpret and decipher. Got to appreciate those otherworldly transformations (I’m predicting the merch business will be quite great) and the theme song to chime in and hype the fight though, I’ll never get sick of those xD. As such, Suishou vs. Shingetsu definitely delivered, props to Studio Nexus for yet another delightful treat!

Now then, on to the meaty part. Like @Otorez, my first impression of that transfer student was also of Shingetsu herself, her mage-less human form that is I suppose, despite the body structure with the petite frame indicating Mangetsu. It’s hard to imagine why she’d bring out such a soft smile otherwise. Also, I agree that it connects up with Suishou’s final words too.

I really expected Shingetsu to try and ‘resurrect’ the other ceaseless mages but sad that nothing of the sort was explicitly evident. My condolences to fans of those poor girls. On the other hand, I was really impressed with the symbolism and the direction this plot took. I feel like they missed a few dots though, but good enough I suppose.

@L-Mo-Reppin, I doubt there’s still magic around except for maybe a little bit from that Shingetsu's uncertain form. Nene’s adult form was a clear illustration of that, I reckon. But you're right about the flowers blooming again, yikes what a bind this is.

Overall, the show was fairly enjoyable (7.50/10) with a good (for the most bit) overarching plot (7.00/10); fairly interesting and diverse set of characters (6.00/10), not a great conclusion for many of the Characters though truth be told; pretty good soundtrack, dope ED, fairly good Op and brilliant VA (8.00/10); and appreciable production values (7.75/10) to fit the dark theme despite the poor lighting but I’ve to say some of the designs of the robots were seriously off-putting to say the least.

=> Solid 7.00/10.

Ok show. Can't say i enjoyed it that much overall, but it wasn't really bad either. Didn't find any character particularly interesting nor were the drama and story that engaging for me.

Even though mech designs are not really my liking and are relatively simple, I must give props to the team for keeping them 2D throughout the whole show in this day and age. I'm also impressed how small the team for this show was. I feel if you combine all the end credits of this show it would be smaller than the end credits for one AoT episode.

Overall 5/10. I neither liked nor disliked it.

This was a pretty solid series, and my pick for AOTS. While I would've preferred less ambiguous ending (with zero doubt of magic being absolutely gone) I appreciate seeing those who were eliminated not being revived in some way. Too often we see some sort of cop-out device that lets character deaths mean nothing, but seeing Ernesta's choice truly follow through was greatly appreciated.

I truly believe this was a pretty solid story, through beginning to end (Kuon's arc in episodes 8-10 could've been written a bit better). Definitely a hidden gem within a packed year of anime.

Also, props to Shinichirou Otsuka. With this and of course Re:Zero, I really think their art style may be one of the defining examples of anime during the 2010's/2020's. I just love the way that their able to mix moe traits onto disturbing/distressed facial expressions.

Great finale to round thing up. Didn't know that this episode was coming out early.

Shingetsu was able to defeat Suishou.
Loved it when they used the OP during the fight scenes. Very impactful.

That transfer student at the end. Could it be Mangetsu. :O

This has been the surprise of the season for me. I really want to give this an 8 but I'll settle with a 7/10.

So, can we assume that the ending was left open for viewers? For me it was quite confusing especially transitioning scenes of blooming flowers. And, of course, she didn't say her wish out loud so we can't be sure if she wiped out all the magic. Then less faded appearance of Shingetsu’s and mysterious transfer student.

8/10 for me. It was a really fun ride.

Enjoyed the intense battle between Ernesta and Suishou. Drosela Nocturne absorbs magical energy, so the way to beat it is to rip it apart - which Ernesta was able to do with the powerup from Mangetsu.

damn... but why go ahead and erase magic???? Kuon and Anna are permanently dead now.

sorry, Granbelm writers. You get none of my money. Was planning to buy items before watching this episode, but forget that now.

Still giving a 7/10 for a decent show.

Pretty sure she didn't erase magic after all considering she made the flowers at the end bloom by using magic and she saved Mangetsu who is the person that appears at the very end.

The interaction between Shingetsu and Suishou at the final moments of battle very closely mirrors interactions between Shingetsu and Anna. This, together with Shingetsu -- Mangetsu and Shisui -- Kuon makes me think Suishou -- Anna.

The flowers are Myosotis AKA forget-me-nots. In the language of flowers they signify, among other things, remembrance during partings, a connection that lasts through time, and reminders of your favorite memories or time together with another person.

My interpretation of the last scene was that the transfer student was Mangetsu.

Shingetsu also talks about how when a child thinks and acts on their own "it gives rise to [their] own free will". So whilst Mangetsu was born from Shingetsu's desires, she became her own person.

She also talks about Magiacontus telling her that Mangetsu wasn't a doll, but a friend. It was her last test, which I believe she failed and thus used the magic to recreate Mangetsu.

The lead up to that part was a bit of a red herring with nobody interacting with her after Suishou's warning that she would fade herself without magic in the world and I swear Nene was taller ie magic was no longer affecting her growth.

Overall the action side of the show was a bit too intense sometimes, making it hard to work out what was going on and the mech designs looked a bit odd, too short and too broad. But the psychological side of the story kept me invested right to end.
8/10

Ignoring the 2, 2 cour shows that are sitting at 9 (Fruits Basket which finished this season and Vinland Saga which started this season), this is right up there with my favourites. Of the shows I've finished I've given 8 to Astra, Given, Dumbbells and Wasteful Days of High School Girls. Hard to pick between them.

Oh Im so glad Mangetsu didn't disappear. They managed to have an ending that was best of both worlds, they rid the world of magic and Mangetsu was still around.

Mangetsu was my favourite character so I was genuinely worried they would actually get rid of her (However she did get an absolutely epic send off) but luckily they didn't. The ending reminded me of A.I.C.O Incarnation's ending it was nice.

This has been such a surprising anime with me just watching it casually at first then getting super engaged. I wish Symphogear XV would take notes from this anime.

Overall such a good series that Im totally buying on DVD and re-watching in the near future. 9/10.

Typical ending that I was seriously was hoping from episode 1 would not happen. But alas it did. These "acquiring all power to save everyone but lose existence and memory of existing" endings are such trash and cheap endings. So many anime, video games, movies, and books go this route and it's just a pathetic way to appear like a deep and bittersweet ending but it's just an easy way to end the story without properly concluding any of the characters' stories or the overarching story. I was hopeful that this anime would end well since the last few episodes have been much better than the first few, but this finale confirmed my fears that I had the entire time watching: that this anime is entirely unoriginal and poorly written. Shame. I haven't decided on a final score yet but I'm sitting between a 3-5.

First time I agree this is without a doubt AOTS if you ignore the two cour shows.

Kinda sad that all the dead remain dead, though somehow it seems Mangetsu sister kept some of her memories and relations formed thanks to magic and thankfully Nene grew to her age.

Part of me wants be belive that the new student is Mangetsu but seeing how sad all ended up I kinda doubt it.

@Otorez now that I read your post it does seem like that, Shingetsu is glowing and it feels like no one notices her, maybe magic was not destroyed since energy can't be destroyed it was only separated from the world, I'm guessing Shingetsu is still the princeps mage but by being a mage she was moved to this parallel world with all the magic, maybe there's some weak interaction like Anna's sister feeling her and Shingetsu making the flowers bloom but nothing more than that.
In short Shingetsu is a magic ghost.

Loved the animation but was getting a bit tired of the all the fighting and heightened drama. Another show for me that went downhill after the world-building. I often get bored with the big villain fights when I'm not that interested in the villain itself. That being said it was still quite good. It's been a great season overall, so this places 9th or 10th.

Granbelm in overall didn't made a good impression on me starting from the first episode where the dialogue was pretty much only "NANI?". The whole show felt for me as a mash up of several anime themes combined I've seen before from much better anime shows and it felt to me this anime didn't really knew what it wanted to be.

Atleast Yoko Hikasa really impressed me with her shouting game as Anna Fugo, so there's that.

Even though Suishou's attacks were so overwhelming Shingetsu's ability to not only sense but also negate her attacks was pretty impressive. The fact that both had such an outpouring of magical power though ensured that both had to fight hard to suppress each other. Hmm the transformation of Shingetsu's doll was quite the pleasant surprise. But this sure served to make the final battle between Shingetsu and Suishou the most intense but also the most visually impressive yet. But man the satisfaction of finally seeing Shingetsu crush her was a definite joy. Though the price of fulfilling her wish will be a steep one its good that Shingetsu is doing so with no regrets. Though its too bad that the memories of Shingetsu are gone from the world the opportunity to see how her friends lived in the new world was nice. Damm that was just a brilliant finale that both combined excellent action and revelation and ending the series on a high note.

Until never, I give credits to this anime for its combination of mechas and magic, it had a unique touch. It was a story with a different perspective of magic, something that caught my attention, magic can become a blessing or a curse, hope or doom. Shingetsu sacrificed his own existence for peace and became the only proof of the existence of Granbelm participants. Honestly, for me, it's a sad and bittersweet ending.

I consider this one of the 10 best anime of the season. I liked the animation and I loved the ED. A deserved 7/10.

Madoka and Homura Gundam version xD

Ok, I don't want to offend anyone who likes it or disrespect it. I just want to leave my opinion:

Weak anime, only had character screaming from beginning to end. Pink explosions and sparkles!
Characters without charisma. Neither emotion passed me with the "deaths" of each...
I am very disappointed because I love drama and psychological anime.
I expected a lot from this anime and got screwed...
Cliché end...
I prefer Madoka and Yuuki Yuuna...

Anyway, I rated 04/10.
Just because I loved the OST.

lol at that one reviewer calling this an 'edgefest.'

I was going to say that my emotional connection to the story sort of faded once Anna was out of the picture, but I found this finale to be exceptionally beautiful and moving, and the battle may have been the most engaging since the first episode. There is something selfish about Shingetsu's existence in the end, even if she is unstable, especially if Mangetsu is the transfer student. I also must admit that it sucks that Anna's rage doesn't manifest itself into the world as some attempt at redemption or some crazy shit like that; seeing her sister think of another person as family is definitely a fate worse than death (I mean literally, since she and others have been fucking negated). Like they couldn't have worked around that shit with those remnants that still seem to be there? A rhetorical question, the ending is moving in its own way.

Hope the studio and especially the staff gets some credit for all of their hard work in crafting the aesthetic to this show. Even if it isn't money direct from the consumers, these people deserve to get more work. I liked this a lot.

Am I the only one who noticed the Gundam references? First Shingetsu becomes a Newtype, them she kills Suishou the same way Kamille killed Scirocco... the last one is extra funny because Kamille's voice actor has been doing the on-the-next-episode previews for Granbelm.

Lol yeah the newtype flash!

Also Suisho saying "I don't need legs!"

With both the Viola Kaze and Drosela Nocturne down I really was half expecting Shingetsu and Suisho duke it out personally like Amuro and Char hahaha

Overall I really love this show. I wasn't expecting much actually, I just like all girl casts doing things but this has become a standout to me. I love the story, and the action is fantastic. Definitely my favorite for this season!

I hear that the previews are what got Granbelm trending, for a little while at least. Doesn't seem like a coincidence to me.

Well u seen her trying to make the flowers grow at the end like she did in episode1 but then it shows someone transferred in and she smiles and then it cuts to the flowers and there full bloomed so either she still has magic or mangetsu is back and she still has some magic left

Or it could just be a symbol for time passing and Shingetsu still watching over the world.

what a wild ride this show has been with a shear of emotions across the board this ended in both expected but unexpected way , in the end she got Homura'd :(

really the only things i didn't like were the SD gundams while cool that they weren't CGI i'm just not a fan of SD gundam style mech's , and the first half focusing heavily on Anna/ Shingetsu think that time could've been used a bit more on some of the other characters and it turned off a lot of viewers from the start with all her high energy screaming.

all and all this show kinda surprised me and im glad once again a show i stuck with till the end turned out great,

Must say, I'm really sad that there wasn't some undoing the bad magic, but it kinda fit with the theme of the anime, that even though bad stuff happens, we can't rewind anything yet there is still good out there.

I like the way you stated that. It was an ok show to me. The fight scences were the thing I will takeaway from this show the most. It overall left a sour taste in my mouth. I. . .I still have questions. . .

I thought Shingetsu and Mangets's Armanox looked awesome. I see Shingetsu has managed to end magic in the world, too bad she never got to be with Mangetsu at the end. I was really rooting for their happy ending. I guess they wanted that normalization at the end, things to go back to where they were before. I dig that, but it still wasn't my happy ending.

I liked this and certainly better than some crap I watched this season. The only problem was the armanox animation, it needed an improvement. The battle with Suishou also took longer than suppose, and that became a problem as it was draining the overhaul story line. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. People who didn't enjoy either didn't get the story line, or you just wanted to fill your list!

7/10.
