To continue commemorating one hundred years of Japanese anime history, NHK has released a ranking for people's favorite anime characters as a part of Anime 100 celebration on Sunday at NHK BS Premium. The ranking was based from votes conducted from October 20 to November 19 last year. The 5-hour program also featured live dubbing (from works that people wish to hear again live and not yet animated), telephone call conversation, new year's greetings from the seiyuus, ranking, commentaries, as well as quizzes and talks about the characters in-between segments.

NHK has released the Best 100 Anime ranking last May as a part of their commemoration.

I'm glad one of KajiKaji's characters is up there, even though I don't watch that series that much. I'm sad that Miyu-Miyu doesn't have any character up there. Yay for Kurama.

That's up to "Bandai Entertainment " not the studio hired to animate it.

Snow White from Magical Girl Raising Project? But she was like the least interesting character in that show (but still not a terribly written one by any means). Whatever.

Still, Rem got BTFO.

It's certainly not a hundred-year celebrating character list Japan needs, but definitely the one it deserves.

Lots of Kemono Friends and Love Live characters on there, which I'm not surprised about. T&B topping the list just like how it topped the list of NHK's top anime of all time. At least there's four Gintama characters on there :3

Wow, not a single character from Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Detective Conan, or Death Note in the Top 52. Especially surprised about no characters from One Piece since it's the best-selling manga in Japan, and the anime is very popular too. No HxH characters either, but a character from Yu Yu Hakusho (from the creator of HxH) made it to the Top 52, interestingly (Kurama). Actually, there's a lot of characters from the same 3 or 4 series dominating the Top 52.

Most of the picks are kind of expected, all are popular characters from popular series, at least in Japan.
Except for no.13. I never imagine Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku would have more cult followings than Cardcaptor Sakura.

I think I really need to see Kemono Friends to see why it's so popular in Japan. It came on Top in AT-X ranking as well (although most of the anime in AT-X ranking were pretty average).

Two characters that stood out the most to me are:

I mean I have never heard much about the anime Funassyi no Funafunafuna Biyori and never knew Hibari was THAT popular.

I am also surprised that the list doesn't have any characters from popular series like One Piece, Haikyuu!!, TTGL, K-On!, Index, Girls und Panzer, Oregairu or Monogatari series given how those franchises are adored in the past and still are. Most of the characters are from newer anime which is understandable but somehow I cannot take this list seriously (and I probably should not).

Tiger & Bunny is huge in Japan according to one of my friends who visited Japan last year. Stores are full of merchandises of Love Live, T&B, Gundam, Geass and Gintama according to her. Considering nothing came up since the T&G 2014 movie (the movie itself is ranked within Top 20 of all time Box Office Gross in movies adapted from TV Anime (remake, sequel, prequel, spin-off etc.).) and was still that popular in even last year means a lot.

Merchandises aside, to put it into perspective in sales with other Sunrise Inc. hits that got sequels in the past and present:

Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED 87K
Code Geass Hangyaku no Lelouch 75K
Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 44K
Love Live! School Idol Project 39K
Tiger & Bunny 38K
Gintama 24K
Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon 21K

I have never seen it myself but the stats, ranking, popularity etc. suggest that Sunrice Inc. could probably make a lot out of it.

after virgin soul i consider this a blessing in disguise. They'd probably make kotetsu fall in love with a chick who wants to kill all non superpowered people then give her a free pass at the end.

Well, the kind of list I expected, but it's still weird to see.
Of course most of them are the usual popular but often shallow characters you would expect :'D At least there are still quite a few that I find actually good.

Putting Eren and Kirito on the same level? I know I am a Eren fan, But hear me out on this one....Eren is a character whose been weak from day 1, He had the will to do things, But never had the power to do it, He's seen people do it, He's learned from them, Understood others and has grown/character customized to this point he is currently at in the manga, Not some random guy on the net whose lvl is already at infinite tier and is chased by chicks 24/7 and acts edgy to the next gen lvl.

It's not like they're restricting these polls to people with at least the slightest ability to judge the whole 100 years - instead of your average casual watcher, whose memory is limited to some seasonal hotties, some evergreen whatever-Shounen-Dump-is-churning-out-ATM, and, if lucky, some childhood memories of Gundam or CCS.

Why are people even treating this as anything else than just another embarassing publicity stunt by NHK?

There's actually quite a lot of characters that I like on this list. xD

I'm more surprised that there are no characters from One Piece on the list especially considering how popular it is.

Level of my english is still too poor, so ask not particularly angry because of my terrible grammar.
