While it's true that the characters backstories are really nothing all that amazing, the show kind of makes fun of the fact that they are so cliche. Kaisar talks about how he used to be this noble knight who stood for justice and Rita pretty much ignores him and isn't the least bit interested. Plus... I think that any backdrop is better than no backdrop, though I will agree that they are a bit too simple, at least most characters have some though but I'd like a bit more for the demons too and maybe the king.

It's not that. It's a bit hard to explain, but to me it feels that they lean on western popular culture in characterization. I mean, in Japanese pop-culture they like to make characters oh-so-very-complex, oh-so-very-attractive. Like, everyone should be suited for shipping at all times. Kaisar and Favaro just don't have this quality in my opinion. The level of ridiculous (and non entirely complimentary ridiculous) is too high.

Keten said:
I do agree with you that the Crab episode is the best one. I was mostly just saying maybe "downhill" wasn't fair to the series just because the 1 episode was the best one.

Yep, the first one was perfect. I didn't like the episode where they fought Azazel and the way some corners vere cut in several cases (they didn't show how they got in the flying fortress, for example), but Bahamut is very enjoyable overall.

Keten said:
I still think it's the best looking show this season truth be told, so much effort was put into the designs, the backgrounds, the animation and even the visual effects. Seriously, whoever made this, give that team a medal. Even the music is fantastic and top tier.

I like the style, though it isn't particularly coherent. Can't say that there are many scenes, which I would remember for their visual side, but more realistic designs are nice to see. Btw, I think, the only case I was really amazed by the scenery was at the beginning of the Ysmanport episode.
Heh, to think that many people refused to watch it after the PVs because of unconventional lips design.

Garo has an interesting style in this season too, but it's much more subdued. Mappa sure are strong this autumn.

Also, you found plot holes? Then again, the series is so fast and things go by so quickly it does a good job at hiding them, though I would be interested in hearing them. Of course, the show doesn't take itself too seriously either, so it doesn't hurt the show as much as it would a more serious show.

Nah, nothing specific - it's not the best show for plot analysis, it's just that things do not always make sense or you simply don't have enough time to even start figuring them out, so the narrative feels a bit incomplete at times. It's fine, but it one more thing to ignore and find compensation for.

To be honest, I kind of like that they aren't doing it in such a way that panders to a certain crowd. It also gives it it's own identity despite it's story being pretty basic high fantasy, makes it more memorable. lol

I actually remember quite a few scenes. The scene after Favaro and Kaisar beat the brute demon for one, when Favaro had the light behind him and he pointed his crossbow at him. Also, the first shot of the giant crab was great, I think that was the moment where I first went, "Okay, the series just jumped the shark and I don't care because this is hilariously awesome." lol There are quite a few more too. I can't really say I have seen a series before that looks like it, closest I can think of is Cowboy Bebop but even then, it's still very different. Also, when I first saw the lips, I was a bit unsure too but I think that's because I have gotten so accustomed to how anime is usually drawn. You are right that it looks very westernized. Heck, even the women who are the most anime looking in the show don't really look all that standard anime. I guess the only thing I'd like more is maybe more badass demon designs like those gigantic titan looking things that shoot lasers out of their mouths. Those were awesome.

Also ya, I like that Mappa seems to be experimenting a bit with art styles. Garo is another example of a show I can't really compare to another in terms of art.

Well... I was gonna say that because of the whole, "Things just sort of... happen..." thing, I sort of threw plausibility out the window already so plot holes really wouldn't do all that much harm to the show as long as they aren't all over the place and obnoxious. It's mostly a dumb fun show that is pumped full of charm and is very well made so... ya, not exactly the type of show that you could analyze, even if it's got some clever writing here and there.

I was thinking the same thing, BUT... maybe his outfit will change in the next episode? I at least hope so. It'd be cool to see Favaro with a new demon outfit plus maybe even a slight change to his hairstyle? Lol. (Not that it's a bad hairstyle in the first place.)

REALLY intense episode, to say the least. Jeanne turning into a demon was something I didn't expect. Though I did have a feeling that Amira's mom wasn't what she thought to be. As for Favaro turning into demon, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I noticed Jeanne had more scars and wounds before the transformation.
You just know Jeanne was abused further might have even been raped.
Very very dark.

Well the same goes for Amira: you have this character, who does have her peculiarities, but is still perfectly shippable , only to have revealed that those "peculiarities" are actually due to her being in kindergarten. Hmmm,.. never occurred to me before, but does this show support child alcoholism?

Seriously though, I understand where you're coming from. However, this show is a satire, something I feel that people in general are not always aware of. I think they are still very much Japanese characters, using non-complimentary ridiculousness to mock amongst other things fellow Japanese as well as Western characters.

Just look at Jeanne: they followed the historical story almost to the letter, even up to the point where she's at the stake, showing signs of abuse/torture, and a priest is approaching. Then suddenly, instead of having her ask the priest to fetch her a cross, as she did in real life, the priest is forgotten from the scene, a mob storms the pile and Jeanne turns into a demon. It is not a case of having a character based on a historical one, it's mirroring the historical one, then yelling "suprise mofo!".

Well I don’t really blame Jeanne for listening to such a lie when she didn’t get any help from them, besides she looks badass as a demon! Poor Amira, I actually thought she’ll be able to finally meet her mom. I guess everybody will be a demon by the end at this rate.

I'm loving the hell out of each second of this show. Favaro, the holy knight allegedly, turning into a demon is gonna be entertaining as hell and also completely unpredictable. But I'm still standing by the theory that one of the two will house Satan (previously I thought it was gonna be Kaisar, but now Favaro seems more likely), the other will manifest Zeus (Kaisar now I guess?), and together they will seal the newly revived Bahamut again.

Awesome episode, gotta say i really underestimated this anime. The demons are all very cool, and the voice actor for Martinet is superb.

Jeanne finally broke and is now a demon. She should've just killed that idiot of king. Whether as a human or a demon, she's still the prettiest character of the show, which is kinda amusing.

Azazel got run over, hahaha. Rita really couldn't care less if you're a demon lord, she'll still interrogate your ass. She also seems to have eluded Martinet somehow. Gotta love the zombie girl.

Poor Amira... i can't believe that basically a 5-year old experienced what she did. Guess it's time for Bahamut to arise, though i wonder if Favaro'll actually kill her. His trick was clever, but the demons aren't idiots.

Won't Lucifer do something, by the way? Don't tell me he's still sitting on his throne, reading books and being fabulous, giving no damns about Beelzebub's schemes.

Still I can only guess what rita's main motivation was for still sticking with the main protags. was it because they saved her from... boredom? Also, I don't get why Rita had to let herself become a zombie if she was already a powerful necromancer.

What about lavalley's story of seeing a child and the angel? Was that not amira? The pendant was there as well? Was it not the same?

The gods are just stupid, they risk letting loose amira just to get to know the schemer but things got worse and even then they have yet to know it was beelzebub. Shouldn't have let something so important with humans that even they deem inferior.

Interesting turnout no doubt but questions still left unanswered.

What an episode, I can hardly collect my thoughts about the things happened
That was really an idiot king. But those soldiers too, how could no one at least opposite his order? Instead they attacked the people without hesitation !
Jeanne burned at stake after all, hmmm. ....wait what?
Where was shitty Lavalley when Jeanne was about to die? And I don't understand why Bacchus didn't interfere
Amira, I loved you, but now I love you more than any time before
That soundtrack when she hugged her so-called mother was brilliant ...and the way she asked Favaro about hugging her . ...... my heart is tearing ),:
That Martinet guy and the way he talk and move was funny, but still hate him. That bastard
I like how Azazel even after they ran him over and being beaten twice, he still has that sharp tongue of him. Also still wondering, why he asked Rita to take him to Bahamut place. Isn't better for him to confirm Lucifer about what's happening?
Favarooo ! what the hell did you become ? And Kaiser, why he is always the one who kept locked while everyone get screwed
Rita is the best girl ever ! She makes deals, does business, avoid fighting when she knows there is no chance , and now she's going to save the world !

Very nice episode, narratively gave excellent twists, I did not believe that Jeanne had a chance.
But the question arises, why do become a demon? I'm curious to find out.
Soundtrack very good, even though the designs with small declines in quality have proven themselves.
Animations and colors of the scenes really beautiful.
Rita is an interesting character.

I dont really get it.. why does Belzebuth free bahamut? Its been said that bahamut is the enemy of both angels AND the demons (he wants to destroy the ENTIRE world).. thats basically the reason why the old demonlord had to sacrifiece himself to get him chained (so you cant say demons just love destruction).Does Belzebuth think he can join/controll Bahamut?(which wouldnt make ANY sense since not even the big demon lord took that as an option) The anime sadly is way too open.. it doesnt really tell you much. It limites the story to certain connections but the basic of the systems stays kinda open+ the limites of the magic everyone is using. So the probably asspull their way out of this dilemma.

Also why is Belzebuth not killing those 2 main characters instandly? I mean what use does those 2 mere humans give him?? It seems to me that this ONLY occur because those are the 2 main character.. and they cant die (at least not until the very end).. very poor storytelling.
