Shinseiki Evangelion

Fifteen years after a cataclysmic event known as the Second Impact, the world faces a new threat: monstrous celestial beings called Angels invade Tokyo-3 one by one. Mankind is unable to defend themselves against the Angels despite utilizing their most advanced munitions and military tactics. The only hope for human salvation rests in the hands of NERV, a mysterious organization led by the cold Gendou Ikari. NERV operates giant humanoid robots dubbed "Evangelions" to combat the Angels with state-of-the-art advanced weaponry and protective barriers known as Absolute Terror Fields.

Years after being abandoned by his father, Shinji Ikari, Gendou's 14-year-old son, returns to Tokyo-3. Shinji undergoes a perpetual internal battle against the deeply buried trauma caused by the loss of his mother and the emotional neglect he suffered at the hands of his father. Terrified to open himself up to another, Shinji's life is forever changed upon meeting 29-year-old Misato Katsuragi, a high-ranking NERV officer who shows him a free-spirited maternal kindness he has never experienced.

A devastating Angel attack forces Shinji into action as Gendou reveals his true motive for inviting his son back to Tokyo-3: Shinji is the only child capable of efficiently piloting Evangelion Unit-01, a new robot that synchronizes with his biometrics. Despite the brutal psychological trauma brought about by piloting an Evangelion, Shinji defends Tokyo-3 against the angelic threat, oblivious to his father's dark machinations.

After four years, I rewatched Evangelion.

My first impression of it was like "Wow old anime with big robots, I like it".
Then I gradually began to ask more and more questions about the plot and narrative.
I ended up with "WTF am I watching" and "It`s maybe the most overrated thing I`ve ever watched".
Then I found out about budget problems and about the movie "The End of Evangelion".
Nothing got better, even worse
I gave it a six, nothing more
It was in 2021

... Now, in 2025 I decided to rewatch this two.
I just knew what I am about to see, and was ready.
The original anime (26 ep.) pleasantly surprised me. Back in time I just didn`t want to watch something like this.
Evangelion is not just about mechas, and fights, you need to be ready before watching this. If you are happy human who is satisfied with their life, probably there is nothing for you, but it doesn`t mean you can`t watch Evangelion, just don`t expect something familiar.
Now I can say for sure that original Evangelion is something more, than mecha anime, something that can resonate with people.
It combines many features and ideas, it is worth watching, but only consciously, better not to start your immersion in the genre or in anime at all with Evangelion.

But the movie, it`s something I still don`t like
I will write a new review specially on the movie WITH SPOILERS, because it`s simply stupid and don`t fetch to the story.
Last two episodes of original series are much better than a movie.

Mixed Feelings

Although the ending was strange and the idea of the movie was not good, you can say that it was just good.The last two episodes are the only ones that could have been rated 9/10 or even 10/10 without discussion. The problems are not solving the mystery of the anime ending, as I did not even understand what happened to the characters or what will happen next.
Characters: Some characters were written very empty, as they do not belong to any kind of mystery, only a past written to be the character’s complex
In the end, I want to give it a good 7/10 because ... it would have been better if the story was clearly explained from the beginning.

I want to talk about an important rule in filmmaking, whether it is live action, animation, or anything else. You have all heard of it before, the most important rule of all: show, don't tell.

On the surface, this is a show about mechas fighting, but deep down it has so much more potential. The author did try to weave in philosophical elements, and it becomes especially apparent in the last few episodes. However, the journey there is a super slow burn, nothing really happens for about 20 episodes.

This is not a rule that can be broken like the 180 degree rule Kurosawa broke. Show, do ... not tell must be followed. We should respect traditional storytelling rules if we want to create something great.

The last two episodes were decent, so for that, I will give this show 20 points out of 100.
