I was hesitant to watch the Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter because of the low score and negative reviews. All I can say is that they were right. I was looking for something lighthearted and funny, but this anime didn't cut it for a variety of reasons.

The anime centers around the main character, Noir, receiving the ability to create, edit and remove skills at the cost of a resource called LP. Although this cheat-like ability would definitely make him overpowered, I expected that at the very least we would see a lot of creativity in how this ability would be applied. I have to say I’ve been thoroughly enjoying some of the latest villainess stories to come to us. And this one is no exception.

As with most isekai, someone passes on and thus becomes princess pride from their favorite video game. What I really liked about this one as opposed to other stories with similar plots, is that the main protagonist, princess pride, doesn’t win over her people by being just kind and pretty. Her intellect was much more valued in this show, and was the reason people began to devote themselves to protecting her or supporting her on her endeavors to become queen.

10/10 - This score is based on my enjoyment with the show, not meant as an objective value of the quality, although I will say as an objective score it's pretty much up there as well, in my opinion.

First up, it's a 3D anime done right and the animators have utilized the advantages of the animation style very well during action scenes. Toriyama's cartoonish style translates well into the visuals/textures and while it can all get a little game'ish occasionally, I think it looks great. Unlike the vomit inducing visual disaster of Trigun Stampede, the frame rate and animation is smooth throughout.

Apologies if my review seems a bit disorganized, as this is my first ever attempt at one, but I felt compelled to share my thoughts on this anime because it truly deserves attention.

Honestly, this is the most beautiful anime ever made. At least for me. It's just a cute story about cute idols making everyone smile, and that's all I need to be happy. There are no stupid misunderstandings in Aikatsu, all the characters are always nice to each other and there are no serious conflicts going on. This is so bad it's good levels of entertainment, that level of The Room and Birdemic Shock and Terror where you know what you're watching is trash but you could watch it with a group of friends and just laugh your ass off with the insane plot, animation and voice acting.

This is one of the progenitors of the Bara genre and it definitely shows it age at times but that makes it even more iconic, and given how big meme culture is it honestly came at the best time.

I would recommend this to people who want a good laugh and don't take things too seriously ...

Vampire Princess Miyu (the 1988 OVA) is a masterpiece of gothic horror. It is the legendary "Dracula anime" that you have been waiting your whole life to see, without so much as knowing that it ever existed. If all you're looking for is a quick recommendation, then you have my blessing to go and watch it right now; I have already given this OVA my highest possible endorsement, so you can stop reading here and thank me later. Your time is sacred, and so too is beautiful artwork. If you are looking for a more thorough introduction, read on.

Vampire Princess Miyu (the franchise) is also ... one of my favorite IPs of all time. Without spending too much time discussing the specifics of the OVA, I'd like to explain a bit as to the matter of "why" that is, as well as express my strong feelings about the Miyu IP in a more general sort of way. This will require discussing both this OVA and the 1997 revival TV anime series, which I will do in an entirely spoiler-free way and at no great depth. To that end, this may read a bit as a heartfelt history lesson, moreso than a review... At first. My hope is that you will eventually see some of what made/ makes this series appeal to me, decide on a watch order, and experience "Miyu" for yourself.

And now, a brief history of "Miyu in the West."

In the West, knowledge of Vampire Princess Miyu (the franchise) would have mostly been confined to an older generation of otaku, who happened to be very active during the dog-days of VHS hunting... The era when all anime were considered "obscure," by Western standards, and some happened to be less obscure than others. These individuals would have likely been between the ages of 15 and 30-something years old around the time of the OVA's release and, further still, likely also had some direct or indirect connection to Japan, through which they were able to source their anime. That is already a very exclusive group of people, and the problem only gets worse as time goes on... I shall continue. While I was not alive at that time, going off of the various second-hand accounts that I've obtained through former hardsubbers, I have developed the understanding that, while Vampire Princess Miyu (the OVA) was 'known of' amongst Western otaku, it was still a fairly obscure IP at that time. This seems to have been a result of being buried by other anime which were popular at that time... Namely, Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure Orange Road, Urusei Yatsura, etc... as well as having the problem of needing to be translated, in order to be understood.

In summary... In order to watch this OVA, in the West, at the time of its release, you first would have needed to:
1 - Have been an active otaku VHS-hunter.
2 - Have known that Vampire Princess Miyu (the OVA) exists. This process would usually involve either direct mention from another otaku, with some connection to Japan, or buying a physical Japanese-language catalogue and attempting to read it.
3 - Have been actively hunting for the VHS.
4 - Have successfully sourced the VHS, likely either from a college club, or else directly from Japan.
5 - Have devised a way to consume the content. This could have involved knowing how to speak Japanese, getting a Japanese-speaking friend to translate it for you, obtaining a rare, hardsubbed VHS from an anime club, obtaining a synopsis write up and/ or consuming the anime without actually understanding any of its contents.

Failing any of that... And you likely would have failed, somewhere along that chain... You would have to wait until 1996, when AnimEigo released a dubbed version of the OVA to VHS, and either buy it or rent it from your local video store (Ie: Blockbuster,) assuming it was locally available. This would have been the easier way to watch this OVA, by far, all the way up until AnimEigo released it as a DVD in 2001. If you missed that, then you probably would not be watching it until anime entered the fully digital age, sometime between '07 & '12... At which point, somebody would have likely uploaded it to an early streaming site.

Even then, at this late stage, you most likely would not have known about the existence of "Miyu" (the OVA.) By this point, this OVA would have been over 20 years old, and a bygone phenomenon. Yes, there was a made-for-TV anime series, but this did little to draw attention towards the OVA, which pre-dated it by around ten years. Unless you were an extremely early MAL-user, or you were otherwise introduced to the OVA by some other friend, website, or happy accident, then there was only one other way to learn about it. This final way would have been to somehow catch the dubbed version of the 1997 revival TV anime series, enjoy it enough to care about the franchise, and eventually come to learn about its superior counterpart later in life, as a result of your dedication.

Lo' and behold, that is exactly what happened to me. I got my first taste of "Miyu" (the 1997 anime) as a teenager in the later 00's, via its release to Comcast's infamous 'DVR' selection, not ever knowing that OVA existed until just recently. For those not familiar, Comcast would occasionally release anime titles to a dedicated subsection of their On-Demand video titles, called "Anime On Demand" or just "Anime." These titles often included that which was far beyond the pale of what your average kids would have been familiar with at that time, or been groomed to expect at their local video stores. You would often see titles with extremely dark themes released to this platform, without any warning whatsoever to the consumer. While by no means the worst offender, "Miyu '97" was no exception to this pattern, and this is precisely what I liked about it as a teenager. The format of the "Monster of the Week" also worked well for a release to DVR, because anime releases to DVR came in batches, and were never consistent. In other words, you were very likely to be missing episodes, in between updates to the catalogue. Considering the format, that didn't matter so much, and it was okay by me at that time.

I recently revisited that anime for the first time in fifteen years, rounding off the episodes I had never seen, and ultimately completing my rewatch just prior to watching this OVA. Half a lifetime had passed, in the time since I had last seen it... And yet, I was surprised to see how well most of the episodes held up over the years. While its visuals and the school setting are somewhat dated by today's standards, the 1997 anime boasts an utterly impressive soundtrack, excellent Japanese voice acting, an often-excellent episodic structure, and a unique aesthetic feel that has stuck with me all my life. The titular heroine, Miyu, is a complicated character, but mostly likeable and very unique. Her motivations are so unlike other heroines in anime, and that is what I find so fascinating about her. Without going into depth, Miyu can be called neither good nor evil. So marked are Miyu's and Reiha's actions throughout the duration of the '97 anime, that I am forced to laugh any time that a mid-wit poseur claims Madoka Magica to be a """deconstruction""" of the magical girl genre, in any way whatsoever. Yes, it is true that, among the 26 episodes, there are a handful of stinkers. Episode 18 comes to mind, as does the very end of the series (which I appreciated, for what it was, but did find unintentionally funny at times.) Even those episodes were charmingly awkward and/ or funny, and were inoffensive in the grand scheme of things. But of course, the number one thing which makes Miyu '97 so noteworthy-- and this does carry over to the OVA-- is that almost every episode, no matter how good or bad, hits you with an ending that absolutely slaps you in the face. Just watch episode 2 and tell me that I'm wrong. Miyu '97 may not be the bloodiest show that you will ever watch, but it will always deliver some of the coldest, most brutal scenarios and episode-endings that you will see put to anime. This brand of horror-factor is the main appeal of the franchise, as I see it, and thus I have elected to underline it here. You will be creeped out, and thrown off.

Queue my contemporary introduction to this OVA, through MAL, and I have totally fallen in love. The OVA completely does away with all of the nonsense that the TV-anime did not need, and leaves you with only the undiluted essence of what makes "Vampire Princess Miyu" (the IP) so great. There is no more school setting, no Pikachu-esque mascot character, no convoluted re-writes of established source material, no episode padding, no occasionally-terrible artwork, and no bullsh!t. All four episodes are fantastic. This is a beautiful anime; the soundtrack is once again excellent, and may I just say that it really does show that the entire thing was drawn on cels. Best of all is that Miyu completely drops her TV-anime stoicism act for this OVA. Miyu is an evil little b!tch, and you will love every second of it. She is totally different from the Miyu in Miyu '97, and that's an incredible thing to see once you have that context. The final product is easily a 9/10; maybe a solid 10, under weaker standards. The fact that this OVA not only scored lower than the TV anime series which it easily surpasses, and no higher than a 7 at the time of my writing this review... while crap like Freiren sits on top of the whole pile... is such a funny joke that I forgot to laugh.

Now, the question is: Do you watch the OVA first, or the TV anime which succeeded it? Personally, I would elect to do as I did, and watch the TV anime first, assuming you have the time and interest to do so. Otherwise, just watch the OVA if you're short on time. If you can manage to get through the TV series first, however, you'll really appreciate both products more, both on an individual and a collective level. The most compelling reason to do this is because the TV anime does possess a slew of great episodes, but is also a flawed series. Trust me when I say that you will not want to miss '97's best episodes, or its best "mic-drop" moments. I also appreciated the creative process behind the '97 anime much more in retrospect, after watching its source material unfold before me in real time. But you won't want to bother completing a 26-episode slog, if you watch the OVA first only to find yourself disappointed with what comes next. Either way, definitely watch the OVA no matter what, if for no other reason than the visuals.

It's an adorable and evidently vintage animated series featuring a bunny endowed with superpowers who swoops in to save people from wrongdoers.

The cartoon seems to subtly incorporate political undertones, particularly with its frequent references to American city names and themes, adding an intriguing layer to its charm.

It's the perfect choice for a casual viewing with a younger cousin or sibling, but it also serves as a delightful background companion while I tackle my homework.

I'm a manga reader. The early chapters were the best, and that's why I was looking forward to this adaption. It does not disappoint! Stellar animation, great voice acting, good direction, fantastic sound design, good backgrounds... nothing is lacking here. This is a perfect adaption, and if you like the manga, you will like the anime!

Absolutely blew me away after watching SDF. One of my favorite anime movies I’ve ever seen. Viewing SDF vastly improves your first viewing of the movie, as otherwise you’ll miss out on a lot of side characters and bits of lore from the SDF anime. It’s a necessary sacrifice to make a movie work though, and it pays off for the main characters.

The animation is top notch. It’s gorgeous. Probably has some of the best animation I’ve seen in a movie.

The love triangle is vastly improved and actually makes sense. In a lot of ways, this is closer to how it should have played out ...

Before the review: This show, like many older shows, contains flashing scenes which may trigger seizures in some people, and which many others will find distracting or annoying.

Words cannot describe how good this anime is. It is seriously incredible how good AND underrated this anime is. This has 15% of the views that YLIA has on MAL and I am assuming maybe 5-10% of the views of YLIA in the real world.
But this anime is seriously amazing. From the emotions portrayed to the music played, everything was amazing.

The Story: The story is about a glasses guy and Sen and a girl that the glasses guy likes. This is a spoiler-free review, and a lot of what I want to talk about has spoilers, but let's just say the glasses guy likes ... the girl (Said in the first episode). We then go to the girls dads record label shop and to the basement we go! There we find a piano, drum set, and a bass somewhere in the closet. We also get a character that carries a trumpet -- a quartet!

Oh yeah this anime was set in 1960's Japan when Jazz was all the rage. In the 1960s, Japan was one of the countries where Jazz music had a significant impact. Witnessing the Jazz craze in full effect during that period allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding of the genre, its roots, and its influence on the music industry. I was fascinated by the way the Japanese people embraced Jazz, and how it became an integral part of the country's cultural landscape. This experience piqued my curiosity about Jazz music, and I began to explore the topic further, delving into the works of some of the most influential Jazz musicians and immersing myself in the rich history and evolution of the genre.

Anyway, Jazz tirade aside, I really liked the choices the story made. When I say the emotions were heartfelt, I do not mean that lightly. I cried in this anime... Not many anime can take that title. There were some holes in the story, but those were very small holes. The only complaint I had was the ending was left a little vague. Do not get me wrong, the ending is amazing! But I wish it had more clarity although leaving a viewer guessing is a typical trait that many anime show.
All in all, 9.5/10 story no doubt about it. And 10/10 music choice as well

The animation: This is something I did not expect would be this good. Ok well after seeing Watanabe directed it, I should have expected it. Mr. Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo directed it. The animation was incredible. As a *past* piano player, haha, I very much could tell they spent extra detail animating the instruments to line up the fingers. This is incredibly hard by the way. I think they might be rotoscoping, but it was hard to tell. Suffice to say the animation quality is incredible bar none. The only complaint I had was there was a lot of CGI and that showed its age somewhat but that's a minor detail.
9/10 Animation and also 10/10 Voice Acting (watched the sub).

All in all 9/10 for the anime
Made me cry, amazing heartfelt story, top 25 Openings of all time for me, what else can I say other than if you have not watched it already go watch it!!!

This anime had some of the highest highs in any anime for about two seconds. It had some really great moments, but in the end it ended up dragging on for to long and felt like it was stretched way to far. And I was overall not satisfied with the ending, it was very predictable and I felt as though the 24 episode build up was NOT worth it in any stretch of the imagination. I would only ever recommend someone watch this if they are really into romance. But if your not stay far away from it, don't waste your time.

As of writing this review, only 5 episodes of 'Re:Monster' (2024) have been released.

So far this is just your standard Isekai power fantasy, with the main character having a similar power absorption ability as seen in 'So I'm a Spider, So What?' (2021) and 'That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime' (2018). It's most similar in quality to the former, the one about the spider, as it doesn't subvert expectations in any major ways and no intriguing plot emerged, as we saw with Reincarnated as a Slime.
For myself, I find the levelling up progression enjoyable and easy to watch due to its fast pace, ...

Soul eater is a masterpiece. But two characters really made it so good. Crona Gorgon and Maka Albarn. Most characters were enjoyable, sure. But without them? I would only give this a 7. Tenchi Universe and Love Hina are usually what come to mind when someone says “harem anime”, and Tenchi does not deserve this. It’s a space opera with a love-triangle and some of the best-written female characters of 90s anime you are ever likely to find.

Only Aeka and Ryoko are even interested in Tenchi himself, the rest just find themselves in his home through circumstance and become his found-family. Sasami is never sexualised (thank goodness) and has a big-brother-little-sister dynamic with him which is wholesome and inoffensive. Washu plays with him but has her own stuff going on. Mihoshi is a ditz and just happy ... to be somewhere she can relax in, she has more of a relationship with Kiyone who also has very little to do with Tenchi - their interactions are some of the funniest and most “real”, like childhood friends who are stuck together for better or worse. Ryoko doesn’t really take her feelings seriously until the show develops, and seems to enjoy using Tenchi to tease Aeka until she starts to let her walls down and really sit in her feelings.

The girls as usual have archetypes - the sassy one, the ojousama , the sweet child, the ditz, the put-upon voice of reason, the unpredictable crazy one, but that’s not all they are. Each character is multi-faceted and goes through some kind of development, they all have their feelings explored and have a lot to say. Tenchi himself is kind of the bland everyman, but he’s also snarky (at least in the English dub) and genuine - he treats everyone genuinely respectfully and doesn’t necessarily want to be in any of the situations he finds himself in, flirtatious or dangerous. It’s unusual to see a protagonist of this supposed genre be humble and disinterested sexually, and he isn’t OP in any way - if anything Ryoko is portrayed as the most powerful. There are clear reasons why everyone finds themselves in the same vicinity and even though the series feels a little disjointed at times, especially in comparison to the more concise OVA, it builds to a well thought out conclusion which is satisfying and cozy.

It might be nostalgia talking but this is a classic with fewer tropes than people give it credit for. The English dub is by far one of the best that have ever been made which is a miracle for the time in which it was produced, and I honestly would recommend it over the Japanese original (but again I did watch it in English first and at age 11 so there is bias at play here). Give Tenchi Universe (or Tenchi Muyō) a chance if you want to delve into the classics, it is far more accessible and far less gross than most of what came after it.

tl;dr: A sequel season that has flashes of what was good about the first season but is overall pretty mediocre.

The second season of Knights of Sidonia continues the story of Nagate and company as they fight against the Guana in an effort to preserve humanity. However, beyond that the season is vastly different from the first and not for the better. What made the first season great was the world building as well as the major battles that always felt like such a desperate struggle for survival that they even had horror vibes at times. This season seems to go in a different direction.

In terms ... of world building and overarching plot, it kind of feels like it threw out most everything that the first season was setting up. It doesn’t just ignore the various related plot threads completely, but rather it comes up with what feel like overtly convenient and forced means of getting rid of them really quickly. For example, placenta Hoshijiro , Kunato’s angst, the pacifists, and the Council of Immortals really don’t matter at all. It does that so the focus is more heavily on a single plot thread centered on Ochiai and some smaller plot threads that stem from that. But these are far more generic and less interesting than the plot threads thrown away. And they’re not all that well written either.

Another area this season feels like a step back is the action. There still is some really good action this season. However, the biggest problem is that there simple isn’t enough action. There are only two battles that felt like they had the intensity and weight of those from the first season, the one in episodes 3-4 and the one from 9-12. And even with the final battle, it felt like pacing was too slow which made it less exciting than it could be.

What it has instead of the action is doubling down on the slice of life and romance/harem stuff. Now I’m certainly not opposed to content like that in anime like these as it can often help with pacing. But the first season wasn’t very good at it, and this season is even worse. It doesn’t really flesh out characters or build up investment in them, and it’s just not all that entertaining or amusing. Character’s are as flat as they were in the first season. There is apparently what is supposed to be relationship development, but it’s moments that happen very abruptly without any proper build up, and thus it doesn’t really feel like it flows well at all. And though I think there was an attempt at a character arc for Nagate, it really didn’t work at all and the final sequence of the last episode that was meant to showcase it fell completely flat.

The art and animation are very similar to the first season, meaning good at mech action but terrible at handling people. However since there’s much more of an emphasis on the people when they’re out of the Garde this time, this results in the art and animation of the season overall being weaker. The OP has a pretty good song, though I still prefer the first season OP’s song. The ED song is okay. The visuals of both are pretty dull. The soundtrack has good tracks, but it felt like it was pretty much the same tracks as the first season without any new tracks or new mixes, which got kind of boring. Also, it straight up played the OP song of the first season twice in the last episode, which was definitely overkill.

Por ahí esta review no hace justicia el amor que tengo por gintama, pero son dos OVAs que van al punto así que me es mas fácil escribir sobre esto que de otras partes del anime. Y cuando me enteré que había un arco de una "poción de amor" en esta serie que nunca falla en hacerme reír a carcajadas, lo quise chequear de toque.

Es un arco estúpido mas de gintama en cierto modo, pero es simplemente maravilloso (se sostiene mi teoría que Gintama brilla mas mientras mas estúpido se pone). Básicamente es Sorachi subvirtiendo el tropo de la "poción de amor" ... que se vio en ochenta series diferentes tanto orientales como occidentales y llevándolo al extremo mas ridículo que se te pueda ocurrir. Ya hasta la ley de que te "enamorás de la primera persona que ves" después de consumir la poción es refutada y exagerada hasta con fetiches sexuales demasiado estúpidos y chistes de testículos bien propios de gintama.

Tsukki es de mis personajes femeninos favs de Gintama y el GinTsuki es mi ship favorito de la serie, así que esto fue literalmente el mejor banquete que me podían servir a la mesa. Es ridículo lo mucho que puedo relatear con la estupidez de Tsukki enamorada y como Gintama se burla a leguas de este enamoramiento y de su caracterización como tsundere, simplemente me rio demasiado. La dinámica entre ellos dos acá es explotada hasta el absurdo y la verdad que da grandes resultados.

Nomás hay un par de problemas con estos OVAs. A nivel narrativo, si es verdad que la villana no es gran cosa, me sirvieron las cosas que le decía Tsukki pero es medio bleh la motivación y la historia que tiene también es muy x. Al lado de la comedia que es sublime eso se queda algo corto. Y el otro problema (el mayor, aunque no es culpa del capítulo en sí) es que estos OVAs son imposibles de conseguir en buena calidad. No están subidos a Crunchyroll ni están en buena calidad en ningún server pirata, yo lo conseguí en 480p en una página llena de anuncios y lo vi no solo porque es canon sino porque me llamaba la atención el concepto, pero es probable que mucha gente se lo saltee por esas razones y si ya estas enganchado con Gintama para mi no tiene desperdicio.

En fin, muy bueno, no se si llega a ser el peak de comedia que son el arco del escandalo, el de la popularity poll, la owee y el del genderbending pero no tiene mucho que envidiarles. Aguante Gintama!

Probably this review won't make justice to the love I have for Gintama, but there are only two OVAs that go straight to the point so it's easier for me to write about this than write another parts of the anime. The moment I found out there was a "love potion" arc in this show that never fails to make me laugh out loud, I wanted to check it out immediately.

It's another stupid Gintama arc somehow, but it's simply marvelous (it sustains my theory that Gintama shines the most when it's stupidity gets overbearing). Basically this is Sorachi subverting the "love potion" trope that we have already seen a thousand times in eastern and western shows, and taking that trope to the most ridiculous posibilities it can offer. Even the law that you "fall in love with the first person you see" after consuming the potion is rebuted and taken to the extreme, with very stupid sexual fetishes and testicle jokes in the best possible Gintama-fashion.

Tsukki is one of my favorite female characters of Gintama, and GinTsuki is my favorite ship of all the series, so this was literally the best meal that the show could serve me. It's ridiculous how much I can relate with Tsukki's enamoured stupidity and how Gintama takes her crush and tsundere behaviour to absurd limits, I just simply laugh way too much. The dynamic of these two is explored in it's most absurd limits and it shows great results.

There are still a few problems with these OVAs. Narrative wise, it is true that the villain is not amazing, I liked what Tsukki said to her but her motivation its quite meh, and her story it's not great. Compared to the comedy, which is sublime, this falls a little bit short. And the other problem (the biggest one, though this isn't the chapter's nor Sorachi's fault) is that it's impossible to watch this in good quality. It's not uploaded to Crunchyroll nor is in good quality in piracy servers or torrents, I got this in 480p in a page full of ads and I watched it not only because is canon, also because the concept got my attention. But it's very possible that people will skip this for those reasons, and if you're into Gintama this is not a waste of your time at all.

Well, this one is great, idk if it gets to the comedy peak that the arcs of the scandal, popularity poll, owee and the genderbending one reach, but it doesn't have much to envy of them. Gintama forever!

Flip Flappers is basically a lighter version of Puella Madoka Magica with a generous pinch of magic mushrooms. It follows the duo, Cocona and Papika, as they flip-flap their way between dimensions, adventuring as magical girls in an LSD-infused world. Each episode is a journey into a different dimension, which comes its own landscapes, physics, and artstyle. The genre-bender nature of this anime is reflected in its storyline, which jumps around as much as the imagination of a child with ADHD as they sample through various TV channels by chewing on the remote. You've got everything: magical girl transformation scenes with loli fanservice, villains practically ... dressed up as the KKK, characters super saiyaning a Gundam, a green bunny with a mouth between its eyes named Uexküll like wtf is this Elon Musk naming scheme (Edit: Apparently it's named after an animal behavioural scientist. Maybe this whole anime was a psychological experiment). This Alice in Wonderland, Spongebob imagination box of a show perfectly captures the feeling of sinking deeper and deeper into insanity - the more I watched, the less I could help but question, "WHAT THE FUCK AM I WATCHING??".

And yet, I'm not a fan of this anime. For starters, you get thrown into it with absolutely no explanation whatsoever. Cocona is just a random student who was basically conscripted into the mahou shoujo army by some little twerp on her flying surfboard who thinks it's all fun and games. The show might as well be tagged as NTR as Cocona somehow eventually enjoys this thrill of nearly dying all the time. The relationship between Cocona and Papika is about as consistent as teenage drama: at times it feels like that of a mother and a peanut-brained runt, and at other times, it's like watching two of the gayest lesbians known to womankind. Papika also has to be one of the most strangle-able characters in existence because good lord, the number of times they scream each others' names is like a fight scene between Naruto and Sasuke. I swear I will go crazy if I hear 'COCONA' one more time because I've already heard it 238 FUCKING TIMES (proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B-tsxruIcs). Because of how wildly disconnected each episode is, I found it difficult to get invested into the 'story'. I think the producers wanted to provide some mystery by having you figure things out along the way, but because of how random everything was, any possible explanation for anything in this show would just feel entirely unconvincing. There were many occasions where I wished it would just stick to one thing. To its credit, however, I did begin to enjoy the show halfway through, but only when my brain gave up and finally decided to just accept what I'm seeing.

As much as I love stuff that makes me go WTF, the lack of any substantial sense of consistency in the storyline to firmly latch onto means that it's a bit too difficult for me to recommend.

The best way I can describe this show is that it was SO CLOSE to being SO GOOD. Ragna Crimson does all the hard parts of making an anime well, typically anime tend to struggle with making interesting powers, interesting conflicts, dynamic and deep characters and themes, and the like, but Ragna Crimson executes all these brilliantly. "Do you know the meaning of the word 'bartender'? 'Bar' means a perch to rest on, and 'tender' means gentle. So 'bartender' means 'a gentle perch.'"

This is a line from the first episode that sets the premise and the tone of the show, romanticizing bartending as a sophisticated and almost therapeutic vocation. Except that I am pretty sure that is not where the word comes from. A bartender is the person who “tends” the bar, as in “taking care of,” similar to "tending to a patient." This may sound like a strange nitpick, but it encapsulates the show for me.

The show is at its most ... interesting when it “talks shop” and explores the many kinds of cocktails, flavor, technique and bartending philosophies. If this is enough for you, you will have a good time. But in almost all other areas the show is awkward and unsatisfying.

The writing in the bar scenes feels very simplistic for what is supposed to be a conversation between adults about refined tastes and hardships in life. Sasakura, the genius bartender and the main character, explains every single detail about what he is thinking, what he is doing and what he means by it. Nothing is left unsaid or ambiguous so that the customer (and the viewer) can contemplate and interpret. Sasakura speaks more through words rather than through his drinks, which I feel goes against the premise of the show. When he mixes in some trivia and some life lessons, he often comes across as preachy rather than sympathetic. The stories that the customers bring to the table are also straightforward, like a rough day at work or doubts about a career choice. There are no layers to peel back, unusual personalities, or particularly complicated circumstances.

These interactions may be more enjoyable if the characters are charismatic or likable, but that is not the case here. Sasakura is just a “cool guy,” always poker-faced, both at work and outside of work, and he rarely says or does anything that reveals anything about himself. It is revealed in the first episode that he has some eccentric sides to him, but those have not been brought up again. I think his character is intended to be an enigma of sorts, but at the moment he just comes across as dull. Other characters are completely flat and get one-word descriptions like “perfectionist” or “workaholic,” if they are lucky. There seems to be an overarching story about recruiting Sasakura to work at a newly-open bar, but there is not much to it, and little progress has been made.

Unfortunately, not much is going on in the art and animation department, either. The cocktails themselves look nice, but the rest of the art is very bland; the bars look mostly flat and featureless. Characters are not very expressive and barely move, and most scenes unfold with characters sitting still and flapping their mouths. I understand that this show is a drama where people sit down and have drinks, but it does not look like the director is trying to do anything creative here at all.

I have not read the manga or seen the original anime adaptation, but I knew that they were well-regarded, and this show has not met my expectations so far. Going back to the “bartender” quote, I feel similarly about the show itself; it feels mildly pleasant but does not hold up to a closer look. This show is just not doing anything nearly as interesting or “elegant” as the subject matter itself, which makes the little annoyances all the more glaring. If you simply want to see great-looking cocktails, or if you want a calm, relaxing show to chill out to, you may enjoy this show. If you are looking for anything beyond that, I really doubt this show will deliver.

Here's a very short review.
This is preetty good for a anime that is best with popcorn and free time.A adventure and food anime of perfect combination.
The characters are pretty good written and lots of smile giving moments not funny though .very bland comedy as the characters have no emotions.cant understand its a serious or fun anime.
Well for some people will find it disgusting and vegans will be having ptsd over it.
Although the animation is topnotch.its even better than friren. The magic and blood is so fukin gorgeous. Even the foods animation is so good.

Girls Band Cry is one of the most grippingly realistic anime I've seen in a long time, and I don't mean that visually. What I mean is that this anime can and will make you feel things. It's quite similar to BanG Dream MyGo in its style of drama, with a dash of Love Live's presentation (many of the staff worked on Sunshine) and a heap of Bocchi the Rock's charm and relatability, all without outright ripping off any of them. Each character is extremely relatable, and the writer pulls off a cool trick by making them quite flawed people emotionally-speaking, but ... not doing so in a way that's infuriating. The main character in particular, Nina, is one who I think a lot of people would find annoying on first glance, but I honestly find her incredibly endearing, and this is coming from someone who is very much her opposite in personality. The anime also does a masterful job of playing all the characters off each other - they all have wonderful chemistry, and if shipping is your thing you'll undoubtedly have a field day here. The plot itself, while perhaps a bit cliché as it's the tried and tested story of forming a band, is well-crafted and enhances everything around it very well. It manages to take a cast of flawed characters and create an optimistic story about communication and growth.

The vast majority of potential viewers who took one look at the 3DCG visuals and immediately left didn't do so without good reason. The stigma against these visuals is quite well-earned and is accurate in most cases. Ironically enough for a style that is often considered more realistic in, say, video game contexts, 3DCG models often look embarrassingly unconvincing and frankly just bad in the vast, vast majority of anime that use them.

Thankfully, Girls Band Cry looks nothing short of fantastic. The characters are all wonderfully expressive in ways a viewer would expect from 2D animation. For example, facial expressions are ordinarily quite stilted in 3d shows in a way that just doesn't feel right. Whereas in Girls Band Cry, each face is created to perfectly fit whatever the character is experiencing, the end result being an anime that delivers on an extremely memorable experience, oftentimes with character's expressions rapidly shifting through them in a wonderfully convincing way in some shots. Now imagine the care shown to the faces being given to the visuals as a whole, and you can begin to understand why I say that the visuals are genuinely one of the best parts of Girls Band Cry. Yes, they are actually *that* good.

Visuals are only part of the presentation, of course, particularly for a music anime. Thankfully, the music is all great, too. This is the kind of music that, while it initially seems good but unremarkable, you'll want to listen to more and more each time you hear the song. It's very, very good, and it's dominated my playlists these past 2 weeks.

You may have noticed that you don't recognize any of the voice actors. That's by design. When production started way back in 2021, Toei scouted five musicians, one for each band member. These musicians are the ones actually performing the music, and none of them have ever voice acted professionally before this. Despite this, the voice acting itself is quite well done, and if you've already seen the show you probably haven't even noticed this if you weren't already aware. It's honestly an impressive bit of directing, and I think it adds a bit of charm and homeliness to the show. Particularly impressive is Nina's VA, who is just 16 at the time of airing, quite similar to her own character's age.

Girls Band Cry is overall one of the most unique yet still good experiences I've had in anime, even just 4 episodes in. Honestly, all the dismissals I've seen of it as a ripoff of something else are closer to compliments than I think these same detractors think - this show really is on par with the excellent shows it's being compared to! It's a shame many won't give it a chance due to the lack of localization, unless or until it blows up like I think (hope) it will. In the meantime, you'll need to get a bit creative to see this one in most parts of the world until localization reaches you, but it's definitely well worth it.

Best feel-good, slice of life, female protag anime that I've seen in years. Honestly, a lot of the negative reviews I read just didn't make sense. It seemed more like people complaining were doing so because they were misidentified the genre. This is a recommended watch if you want something refreshing and endearing.

Ryza no Atelier is a great show if you're looking for a lighthearted coming of age story that still maintains that childhood innocence to it. It breaks away from the "teenaged classroom" model and gives us a freah take on "kids just being kids and finding their own way to become adults."
