Kaijuu 8-gou

After the destruction of their hometown, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro make a pact to become officers in the Defense Force—a militarized organization tasked with protecting Japan from colossal monsters known as "kaijuu." Decades later, the 32-year-old Kafka has all but given up on his dreams of heroism. Instead, he cleans up the remains of the slaughtered kaijuu after they are defeated by valiant soldiers—including Mina, who has successfully achieved their shared goal.

Upon meeting his new coworker, Reno Ichikawa, Kafka faces a mirror of his past self: an ambitious young man whose one desire is to fight as a member of the Defense Force. Unfortunately, the two are soon involved in a freak encounter with a rogue kaijuu. Though Kafka demonstrates his innate heroic nature and rescues Reno from certain doom, he is left gravely injured.

While both men recover in a hospital, Kafka is seemingly attacked by another one of the beasts. As a result, he gains the ability to transform into a humanoid kaijuu with the strength and powers of the massive monsters menacing Japan. Dubbed "Kaijuu No. 8" by the military, Kafka resolves to use his newfound gifts for the greater good. Tied together by mutual respect, Kafka and Reno set out to join warriors like Mina at the forefront of the Defense Force.

The animation is very clear and appealing and the characters are all unique in their own right. The scenes are vivid and don't have the picture book feel when you watch it, everything is animated. The fight scenes and crisp and very fluid. I enjoy that aspect of the series the most.

The plot/story itself is very generic. If you have seen One Punch Man, Tokyo Ghoul, Solo Leveling, Parasyte, or World Trigger, Kaijiu No.8 takes themes and plot ideas from all of these series. Not saying that it's stolen but just saying that it is very similar and unoriginal. Enter the weak protagonist who stumbles ... upon unbelievable powers, and he has a dream of being stronger. In this story there is some kind of military force or group with a power ranking system. He tries to hide his powers and pretend to be weak because he doesn't want to let on about his powers. He is goofy/silly/outcast. He doesn't use the full extent of his powers but will probably do so when he is needed the most <---- all very overused ideas.

Despite all the commonalities Kafka has a personality that draws you in because of how different he compares to those around him because of his age. I found myself smiling or even laughing at times. Overall Kaiju No. 8 is worth a watch but as anime lover it won't be anything ground breaking or something that you haven't seen.

Mixed Feelings

Art - 8/10 Some high points, but overall pretty damn generic in this aspect,

Characters - 7/10 : Alot of the characters are forgettable and just nothing, I have no interest for the captains, and the MC feels like a side character, there isnt a clear "Lead" In this series and that gives it a lack of attachment and stakes.

Story - 6/10 : Its not bad, but its a pretty braindead story that you just watch for the fight scenes and not for the story, and if thats what you watch shows for I respect that, but the lack of a proper story effects my enjoyment.

Enjoyment ... - 7/10 : The Kaiju's Designs are really cool, and the fights are well animated, but there was no emotional stakes until the final 2 episodes which were the best of the series. Until than it was just fighting without stakes.

Honestly, this has been a disappointment. The opening and ending theme songs are amazing, but that's about it. The plot is rushed due to the 12 episode format. The first 2 episodes were great, but it slowly introduced more and more characters that the viewer couldn't care less about since none of them have any backstory besides a generic 30 second telling about a generic traumatic thing that happened in their childhood. Even the main character is just a one-dimensional shounen protagonist with little to offer in terms of relatability outside of his age which is close to my own age. It's basically just a ... show you can watch while you're waiting on another anime to release. I will likely just read the manga going forward since this plot was rushed and all over the place in terms of storytelling. It's just mind-numbing action and no substance, so if you're just looking for explosions and constant fighting then this anime is likely more suited for you. However, I value storytelling over everything so I have to give a negative review on the first season while remaining optimistic for the future of Kaiju No. 8.
