hard hitting and dark and yet beautiful, one of the best anime series of the 90s. some moments had me sitting up with my hand over my mouth in shock (guts what have you done?), while others were really touching. what really sets this apart from any other fantasy shounen is the depth of the characters, specifically guts as he deals with his past, himself, and the guilt he accrues throughout the season.

the animation is a little janky at times, sure, but it was the 90s and sword fights are hard to animate impactfully. fortunately, what makes this show so enthralling is rarely the brute action. even in the battle heavy episodes, what is usually more interesting is the clever tactics the hawks use to win.

berserk was beyond genre defining, it reinvented fantasy in its entirety, created tropes that are still in use today, and has inspired some of the greatest pieces of media of all time.
