incredible. beautiful animation, gripping story, mindbending style, compelling characters, and above all deeply important themes.
this anime is about a lot of things but the overarching story is about how rampamt stress, mental illness, and unhealthy work culture drive people into a corner so badly that they will use anything to escape, and how that escape can become a bigger problem than the stress.
this anime is both episodic and progressive. it touches on many issues like sexual abuse, horrible work environments, and alienation from community, but ties each one up into its grander narrative incredibly to outline the issue of modernity.

hard hitting and dark and yet beautiful, one of the best anime series of the 90s. some moments had me sitting up with my hand over my mouth in shock (guts what have you done?), while others were really touching. what really sets this apart from any other fantasy shounen is the depth of the characters, specifically guts as he deals with his past, himself, and the guilt he accrues throughout the season.
the animation is a little janky at times, sure, but it was the 90s and sword fights are hard to animate impactfully. fortunately, what makes this show so enthralling is rarely the brute ... |
