That's sorta what happened to me, as well. I joined in late 2015, luckily only a few months after I had officially started watching anime - not counting Saturday morning 'cartoons'. I had been using pencil and paper up until that point, so switching to this was a real blessing.

haha, I actually signed up to MAL because of my older sibling... He is my first friend on the website, funnily enough. He's not really into anime much anymore, though...
Haha, it's the opposite with me. I'm the one who got my younger siblings to join this site, and they both use it pretty regularly. One of them doesn't really watch a whole lot, but the other one binges like there's no tomorrow, and I'm kinda jealous :D.

Definitely. When I first joined it was because a friend had showed me PocketMAL, and I thought it was pretty neat so I made an account and added the shows that I had seen so far. I probably would have run out of anime to watch if I hadn't joined MAL. Now there is no shortage of places where I can find interesting stuff, whether it's from the popularity pages or through Reviews or clubs or from my Friends' profiles.
Are you glad that it made things a whole lot easier to organize and choose what you can watch/read?
Considering I was legit physically writing stuff down, this is so much nicer. Now I mostly use things like Recommendations and MALGraph to add more similar stuff to my list, and that helps a lot. It took a while but now I also have a good system developed for how I organize and get through my list, which wouldn't have been possible without all the specific details you can add on your List (Progress, Tags, Dates, Priority, etc.)
I get very sad whenever MAL goes down. I usually jump to AniList in the meantime because it has one of the larger databases and I can easily import my list (and honestly I really like the design and layout), but it doesn't have all the functionality of this site so I only stay there until MAL comes back. |
