I tend to rate my anime high if it has characters I like. One or two characters I am interested in can change my outlook on how I view an entire anime. However, if a series has uninteresting, blah or really annoying characters it's not going to get a high score from me. As tastes are subjective (no matter how many people on here try to say it is not), so just because someone else enjoyed a series, I might not have. I don't care about animation, a minuscule plot hole etc. If a series has likable characters and can get me watching one episode after another without counting the minutes until it is finished, without being bored then it is good enough, though it has to have some sort of plot to keep me invested. As anyone can see from my anime list I have pretty shit tastes anyways (wow just like everyone on here!) so I could care less about arbitrary ratings and opinions, unlike some people on this site.
As for manga...I mostly read series that an anime has not completely finished like Hunter x Hunter and Eyeshield 21. Also, if the manga and anime adaptation are different enough or I just don't like how the anime was adapted, I will try and read the manga if I feel like it would be worth it. I usually read manga that are my absolute favorites Haikyuu, Kuroko no Basket etc. as well. If a series has not been updated for a long time, I put it on hold. However, I am bad at keeping my manga list updated on here so it's not really accurate. I also enjoy playing RPGS including Dragon Age, anything Shin Megami related and Suikoden. I have the comments on my profile for friends only just because I don't like random people commenting on it. If you want to talk feel free to friend me or just send me a message :) Also, sorry if it sounds like I am rambling, I just like adding stuff to this profile lol.
As for how I rate my series...I enjoy anime with characters I like so anything with characters I am in to and an okay plot gets a pretty high rating from me. The plot doesn't even need to be anything amazing, it just has to have some sort of flow to it and not be all over the place. Furthermore, even if I don't like the main characters from something if I like the side characters it's going to be an okay series. I often like the side characters more than the MC anyways, especially in Shounen. I usually like faster paced anime, with some amounts of comedy and am not really a fan of slower paced or boring anime, but there are always exceptions.
My views and how I rate my anime are not set in stone and do change from time to time but it's nothing dynamic. Like a small increase or decrease in ratings to a some series here and there, changing how I rate my dropped series etc. Due to the fact I already have a good feel for a series and I put a lot of thought into rating them so my changes are nothing crazy. Endings don't mean that much to me either. Like if the ending was good in an anime but the rest of the series was not, or hey most of this anime sucks but it gets better later in the series...yea I could care less. My ratings would not change that much.
10 Ratings are My Absolute Favorites...I do no think any anime is a masterpiece and that they all have their flaws but I enjoy these series so much I can overlook their shortcomings. So my 10 ratings are series that are my top favorites and they are my favorites because they are 10's lmao. I do not see them as perfect and they can easily be 9 and even 8 ratings if I did not have a personal bias towards them. Like Yu Yu Hakusho could easily be a 9 or 8 due to quite a few boring episodes and arcs. However, the Dark Tournament to me makes up for it, thus it being one of my favorite series. Slam Dunk could also be a 9 because Hanamichi annoys the fuck out of me. But the side characters and Hanamichi's growth as a character throughout the series puts it into 10 status. Yuri on Ice I felt was too short to flesh out the plot and characters though, the amount of warm hearted feelings it gave me makes it a 10 in my book.
9 Ratings are also amazing series that I love but not enough to be my absolute favorites. It's kind of hard for me to explain but these series just did not give me the same feelings as ones I rated a 10 even though I still love them. Rurouni Kenshin for example there were characters that got on my nerves too much I just couldn't over look it as well as the long filler parts. Banana Fish a certain character died and I am not okay with that!! Demon Slayer I would have probably rated it a 10 rather than a 9 if it was longer at least the first season. We shall see what the second season holds for me.
Series rated 8 and 7 are pretty much normal meaning 8 being very good and 7 good. 8 are still favorites just not enough oomph to make it a 9 or a 10. It could be that it just didn't stand out enough, I felt it needed to be longer or still great characters but I didn't like them well enough to give it a higher score. Let's use Dr. Stone Stone Wars as an example. I loved the anime and the MC as well as a lot of the characters but the season was too short imo to really do much with even though I really enjoyed it it. I will probably rate it higher when the later seasons are animated usually because Shounen series for me really don't get going until later in the series. As for 7 ratings, I still see 7 as a high rating. Though maybe most of the series was really good and then it kind of started to decline or there were a few boring episodes but the good episodes balanced the series out. However, not enough to give the series an 8. Examples MAR was an anime I really liked but it started to bore me because it went on for too many episodes. Kino as much as I liked the series, there were multiple episodes that bored me and Kino and Hermes being really the only main characters and I liked them well enough but didn't love.
Series rated 6 are like MAL says...fine...nothing amazing...maybe just a cute simple story or a series I liked at first but started to get worse over time. Plot could be too fast but I still liked the characters etc. Could have some things I had issues with in the series too. Death Note I gave it a 6 even though I really liked it because I think it declined after what happened with L. 5 Ratings are basically my meh scores...Not horrible, not good just meh. Or I just really disliked the series for some reason but not enough for it to be a bad rating. Code Geass...I didn't like the main character and thought he was a giant D-Bag (the rest of the characters were ok) so I couldn't get into the series. Kuroshitsuji II...I wished it would have followed the manga. Some of my 5's are rated that just because the series was not for me, others are the plot was all over the place or too slow however, I liked a couple of the characters in the anime and I enjoyed some of the episodes.
Series rated 4 and below are just disappointments...bad adaptions, specials and OVAs that bring nothing to an anime, anime that bored the crap out of me, bad pacing, or just a bad series, or a series that just did not live up to what it was supposed to be. An example is I just finished watching Space Dandy, which is supposed to be a comedy...I did not laugh a single time and found most of it boring. As it is a comedy that is supposed to make people laugh but did not make me laugh, I gave it a 4.
I rate series based on personal enjoyment and do have some annoying and over complicated way to try and score my series. The higher rated a series is on my list, the more I like it...yes that is it...mind blown! I do not rate series lower then a 3 because why should I try and push myself to watch something I know I will not enjoy. When I can be trying to find something to watch that I might like? If it was something I was going to score lower than a 3, it was probably something I watched only a couple of episodes of and deleted.
As stated in my profile at the beginning, I try not to drop shorter series because I can finish even ones I dislike well enough. (Only talking about series I would rate 3 and above.) Anime I absolutely hate, most of the time don't even end up making it onto my list because I do not even bother watching enough episodes to add them. If I drop longer series I try to watch a good amount before dropping it...At least enough to in my mind form an opinion on it. I rate all dropped series as average or bad because that is what I view them as...nothing abysmal or amazing just average. It just seems unfair to me to rate something lower than that I wasn't able to completely finish no matter what opinion it gave me.
Reasons for dropping a series can be teeny such as...I just found it boring or it wasn't for me. To larger issues such as the anime started out good but went to shit, pacing, bad adaptations, hating where the anime was headed etc. To petty shit like I just hated a character who ruined the series for me. I mean sometimes I can finish series I don't really like, other times I just can't and have to drop them. Basically if I find myself getting so bored of a series that I am not even paying attention to it, is usually when I drop it because why try to even watch something I cannot focus on enough to try and finish. Also, if it seems like I am counting the minutes until an episode is over with and cannot wait until it is finished, is grounds for dropping a series.
For my on hold anime, I try not to keep something on hold for long periods of time because I'll forget what the series was even about and have to rewatch it again anyways. So I try to keep on hold series to a time limit of a few months to a year at the most. I put series on hold when it has been in my watching list for long periods and I haven't watched it, just to declutter my list. I will get back to watching them just not at that moment. Probably after I finish a lot of the seasonal anime I am watching. I also put series on hold if I want a break from it, or am not in the right mood for it....This is One Piece atm. It's one of my favorite series I just don't feel like binging it right now.
Other than that if I am debating on dropping or giving an anime a second chance I might put said anime on my on hold list, or if a series pissed me off so much I need a break from it etc. (I don't have anything on my list like that right now). Mostly my on hold is my list with intent to finish series, I just found other anime I wanted to watch first and will come back to it later list.
I don't have really one way of watching anime, I just need to be in the right mood to watch it. I do prefer to binge series if I am really enjoying an anime. It is difficult for me to watch only one episode of something currently airing if I am really getting in to it. But also it's hard for me to wait until it's completely finished airing to start watching it as well...see the conundrum lol.
I sometimes watch seasonal anime as it airs or wait until it is completely aired to finish watching it, it just depends on how I am feeling. If it is an anime I really want to watch I will probably watch it as it airs or wait for a couple of episodes to be released. For anime that has already aired I just watch what I want to watch usually higher priority stuff first. Though at the moment I am trying to complete shorter series and lower priority ones to trim down my PTW list a bit.
I torrent my favorite anime and store it on a 8 Terabyte hard-drive and watch it on a WDTV box. If you have not heard of one, it is like a stream box but can store downloaded videos as well as stream. Probably one of the best gadgets I have ever bought.
I also stream series and watch it on my Google Chrome-cast. I tried watching it on my jail-broken Fire-stick but it is too hard to find streams for series. My favorite streaming sites are Netflix, Crunchyroll, GoGoAnime, Chia Anime and 9Anime.
I tag my series with a demographic tag and then the year the anime started airing. Then I just copy whatever genre tags are in the anime description. Though I wish MAL would better tag certain series as a lot of demographic or genre tags are missing, not uniform with others in the same series or not correct.
Types of characters I like...I usually like strong and independent female characters and most of the time stotic or cool acting male characters and bishounen!! Types of characters I dislike are really generic, useless, jerk, and crybaby male characters and bossy, clingy, useless, whiny, bitchy and Mary Sue like female characters. I tend to like anti hero types of characters and really hate characters who kill characters I like lmao...cough...Blackbeard cough... also dislike characters who have huge egos when they really just suck (looking at your Kuwabara!). Also dislike really naive and idealistic characters who do not think of the consequences of their actions. However, there are always outliers for all of these. I don't mind the characters from the character types that I dislike who change for the better and have good character development (ex: Endeavor, Erina etc.) it is the characters that refuse or do not change that I have a problem with.
So...my profiles usually have a character theme so of course I have to have music to match :)...
