Asian culture is not and was not to celebrate consuming animals that killed fellow persons through the argument of effectiveness. Probably.

At least it's not a western influence.

Most of the natives of the americas would support that mentality, and they're of asian descent. Never waste what is killed. Eat the meat, make something of the skin & bones.

Yes, but it's strange to think of eating them as a way to channel the dead explorers' energy or something. Can't imagine native americans would think that neither.

Not really, she was just talking about chi basically... Their life force was stolen by the bird, and she took it back, so it's like that person's life helped her, it's poetic in a way. You must be thinking about the person's literal body cells getting into the meat making it quasi-cannibalism or something...

That's poetic in a way, yes. So long it's just life force and not human meat. Applied to animals alone feels better though.

That's how almost everyone understood that as, as semi-cannibalism. And the talk of Riko as "cannibalism is ok since the chi flows back that way"
Which is odd to say, since chi or any kind of life force isn't directly bond to the meat, or isn't it?

It's referring to the literal energy which comprises your body, the EM; cells and other such things are just constructs of that, which when consumed etc is manifested into other compounds and energies etc. You don't turn food into kinetic energy by magic. Granted that one didn't have much time to digest. They had a tonguey thing, so doesn't seem like they eat bites, but more like chisel away and suck. Again it's about spiritualistic optimism. You're gonna break real fast if you don't tell yourself things like that like a fool... Only a fool dwells on the thing and is unable to move on and seek merits. If it was modern humans going down there, they'd go insane real fast.

I mean if you get real pedantic, the material always goes full circle through nature anyways... if you traced the material, you would find it coming back to human consumption eventually, so most of the taboos are only avoided in close proximity really. You're better off not having all these's arbitrary morals about it.

Reminds me of Grisaia...

I personally don't have gripes with them eating the human-eating animals- it's natural for irl humans to do that in some way or another, but the creepy thing was that from my view Riko herself was viewing the consumption in a 'quasi-cannibalistic' way. Maybe it was poetic but I felt she was using realistic language

Not that that's a huge problem

How to go to that Abyss?

Ah, started with the brutal senario and that OP Riku overpowered those monsters and saved our MC! I actually like this show that how its being so creative and not repetitive and something not generic! Could had been 2-cour show, then it could turn out to be "Masterpiece Anime of the Year".

5.75/6 for the episode.

I'm so good at being aware and intuitive and thinking on my feet with stuff like that, contrary to the mundane world we all live in... What am i even doing on earth? Why am i here when literally all my skillsets are suitable for somewhere else. At the very least, when society collapses, i won't be one of the ones that fall with it.

Lanz said:
Riko's speech on the meat was v creepy, that world is quite so too
It's not creepy at all. The cycle of energy and material comes back around. It's better to make light of and appreciate nature's way. Better to eat it than to let it rot. If anything, the societal norms we have in the west that are contrary, is what's disturbing.

and you'd be right. i decided to drop it this week. my friend dropped it last week, and at that point i was like "eeeeh it doesn't happen often enough that i can't ignore it". then this week happened.

it's just not appropriate. and i disagree with it 'not being sexualized', because we all know who this shit panders to. what's the purpose of having naked children? you don't need it for "realism", so there's only 1 other explanation for it.

it's a shame too because the premise of this series is really cool. but whatever, this season is full of cool shows so i won't miss it too terribly

Really? Dropping it because of THAT? Ok, she was nude. Ok, she's a little girl. But, 1. She's not a real human being and 2. There's literally nothing there. She's as washboard as washboard gets. I don't see the issue here.
Ya, frankly, seeing the nudity as an issue actually exacerbates the issue... instead of just letting naked people be naked people, it's "OMG IT'S SO IMMORAL!" Who fucking cares? Nobody should.

Benmashi said:
And for the hanging up naked, just shows how f*cked up their world is. I surely could have done without that scene tbh. Doesn't ruin the narrative though.
It's a punishment not much different than the strap (i'd say it's less bad). Sure it's deranged, but we were also there not very long ago, and it's even still considered normal by some. If you think it's the nudity that's messed up then you're priorities are way backwards.

At the end of the day this is a fantasy world and it should be appreciated as such. Whether it's great characters or not, whether it's moral or not... There's plenty of anime with great characters and shit plot, plenty with shit characters and great plot... There's plenty of gore-fest anime, and nobody whines about that... Just arbitrarily picking and choosing what to whine about with no logical consistency... damn the western world is retarded.

As i made clear, the nudity isn't an issue for me. In the show even with the "strung up naked" tossed in, it never strays to the macabre. But still, getting punished with ruler was a thing in our world, hanging up a kid and whipping is something else. Also Nat's story of the kids in his hometown before he went to the orphanage, is more disturbing.

And people can get very fickly, that's always been the case. Just look at Sia's videos Chandelier and Elastic heart. How many people on the internet looked to deep into that and were blind for the artistic side of it. Complainers gonna complain i suppose.

People have been punished by much more than a mere ruler, but anyways. When did anyone say anything about whipping when tied up naked?

My mistake. I thought the director did that in episode 2. She just holds a stick in the strung up scene. Either way, it's that scene i was referring to. As for the clips of Sia. Some people complained using Maddie (the dancer) in the clips the way she was portraye

The corpse weeper is kind of freaky, it mimics the sounds of help of its victims. Poor cave dweller. Still, it's scary thinking you'd hear someone crying for help and then you encounter that thing waiting to eat you.

Finally, Regu uses his cannon beam again. So awesome, wished he used it more or show us other tricks he has up his sleeve.

Why is Regu blushing with a shirtless Riko? She looks just like another boy without her shirt. lol

Riko is savage, after seeing that corpse weeper eat a human, she grilled the motherfucker and turned it into wagyu steak.

Ozen doesn't seem to like Riko or either of them.

To be an object created by man, Reg is far too human, the mystery over him gets stuck, wow! There is nothing to complain about in this episode, even this time the soundtrack succeeds in giving more emphasis to moments of anxiety and releasing even more vivid feelings of dramatic and melancholy during the narrated events. Really raw and without spinning of certain scenes. Fabulous the scene of the "Incinerator", reminds me so much of Genos's character, Reg has not even his brother? XD

Reg is definitely the best possible partner Riko could have for the Abyss. He channeled some kind of amazing inner strength/memory from his past and his arm became a goddamn incinerator. That whole scene was pretty cool.

Anyone who is describing non-descript nudity that was well explained/required in the story (Riko's clothes were covered in vomit, was Reg really supposed to leave them on her?) as "fanservice" or "lolicon shit" needs to grow up. The camera didn't pander on her body at all, seemingly avoiding any long shots that could be misinterpreted as fanservice.

I hope this White Whistle chick won't give them a hard time.

I'm certain Regu is a cyborg since there's no reason for a Robot to have emotions or genitalia. Guessing he might've been a Diver that was severely wounded and had some of his body replaced with artificial parts. Would be cool if that explains the voice he heard in his head.

I love how bizzare the beasts look here. The fact that they're drawn differently comparing to the other elements of the show just makes them all the more eerie.

Although the show reminds me of a Ghibli film at first, the dark tonal shift and unsettling atmosphere of the world are gradually giving me Shinsekai Yori vibes. Wouldn't be surprised if the story becomes extremely disturbing later.

This anime is really cute and is full of bright colors and adventurous spirit, but it's also really, REALLY morbid and frightening when it wants to be. Seeing Riko's outlook on survival while eating that creature's meat really spoke volumes on life in and around the Abyss. In a way, it makes the farewells in the third and fourth episodes even more impactful, as everyone knew that they might not ever see each other again. As such, Riko and Reg can't be picky about their means of survival.

So far, I'm really liking Made in Abyss. There's this great feeling of mystery surrounding the series, and it's really great in building atmosphere with its good amount of silent moments, letting viewers observe the environments and characters' actions. Though, as of thus far, there's only been the rustic fantasy city and forests to show off. While the scenery is really beautiful, it's also not really varied. Though, criticizing the show for not showing off more might be a good thing, as it means there's a lot of potential for imaginative places and creatures as the main characters dive deeper into the Abyss. It's like watching a playthrough of a dungeon crawling RPG, but one with a greater emphasis on both wonder and danger.

Seeing Reg's laser kamehameha made me realize something. If these raiders risk their lives to go down the abyss to gather relics that is in demand world wide, wouldn't it make sense to develop some kind of weapon to help them agaisnt these beasts? All they're carrying are mining instruments and others but no weapon whatsoever. That's why they die. Also I like Riko's little speech about eating meat.

It's definitely getting darker here. Corpse Weepers in the 2nd layer only means that there will be even worse creatures down there. Good thing Reg's Incinerator was there to save them both again.

And by eating meat, the circle of life continues~ They managed to get to the end of the 2nd layer too.

Booooo.

Nothing scary here. I wonder why they have given this a high rating.

Whatever Riko told this episode about is just Archaeology 101. No dark stuff at all. F**k this series.

So we met the crying reapers and the 2 of them got through with it because of some shitty plot armor that Reg develops to save Riko. The entire episode is just one big pile of jokes and stuff. We see more of loli body of Riko and lame jokes about journal and stuff.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was better than this. 1000x better.

One more episode, then I will drop this. Such a over hyped series, yet ZER0 development in the status quo for 6 episodes. If this is the case, I might as well rate it a 6/10 for not living up to the expectations.

I bet the next episode will be focusing on how humans can be monsters sometimes and stuff like that. And there will be a plot twist showing how cruel the world really is. Otherwise, this is just the worst.

Without change,we end up becoming the very person we hate.

This episode was okay.

The creatures were cool, and the fight with the corpse-weepers was pretty awesome. Reg's use of his "incinerator" was neat.

The past few episodes have just been missing something.... and I can't really put my finger on it.

I went from feeling like this show was awesome, to feeling like it was just alright.

I think part of it is the knowledge that there's only 13 episodes, so I feel like each episode has to be extremely important. That said, I guess I just haven't felt like enough important things have happened in the past few episodes.

For instance, this episode really didn't reveal anything new. Reg used his "incinerator", but we didn't get any explanation of how or why he has it, why he can only use it occasionally, why it affected him the way it did, etc.

I also feel like this show spends a lot of time on really random, seemingly trivial things. We got an extended scene about food, and a talk about the semi-cannibalistic rituals of the cave raiders. While somewhat interesting, I didn't feel it was really needed.

In the same way, the time Riko spent lamenting the loss of her journal also felt wasted.

I understand that, in the grand scheme of things, these scenes aren't that long... but it brings me back to the number of episodes and feeling like every moment needs to be important.

Perhaps it will be moot and there will be more than one season. I guess we'll see.

I absolutely agree and understand you. Until now it's been pretty much "child's play". But I assure you from now on we are getting much more serious.

Whew that's good to hear, I thought I just wasn't getting it or something. I mean the show is good, but I guess coming into it knowing how well critically received it is made me think I was missing something.

The corpse-weeper was pretty cool and we got to see Reg's blaster arm in action again. Maybe it's just the visual presentation but this time the Incinerator looks even more powerful than the last one. Reg is really a handy partner. They've descended that far already by taking shortcuts. This episode also expanded more on the cave raiders' culture with all the meat talks which was very interesting.

Reg - (she'd also add a note about how my penis looks like real one. I hope note is gone for good)
Riko - don't worry, I'll just make a new one!
Reg - (d'oh!)

Also, we meet in the end of episode someone who apparently knows Reg. Let's see where this is going...

"The resilience of those who live here was built up for the sake of life in the Abyss."

The part about eating the beasts who feed on cave raiders and the cyclical nature of their deaths seems like an addition to one of this show's overall themes. I get the feeling that diving into the abyss and sacrificing one's self is controlled either by the orphanage head or some other part of their society as a "necessary sacrifice for the greater good."

Ozen looks so cool :D She should be the one to give them the cruel reality of their journey. It's so annoying to see despite Riko's stubborness from the beginning, she has not been punished or learned anything.
