Some feels this episode. It had some emotions. On the other hand, I'm rooting for Eiichirou to do well. I mean, the kid is trying his hardest.

I think his control is getting better. Also for some reason, I'm really liking the way the OST was handled this episode.

Yuuki is a very interesting side character.
Didn't expect Eiichirou to hold against Miyagawa.
His control is really good, thats effort paying off right there.
Countering Miyagawa's powerful ground strokes by getting closer to the net was a very good idea.
I wonder who will win the set in the end.

Let me game begin!

Ei-chan is already having trouble since the shots are different from what he's faced until now.

So they're both winning their own serves and it seems that Ei-chan tennis has been studied during the parts where he served.

C'mon Ei-chan! Win the game!

I hope Eiichirou wins, he has trained a lot and is already halfway, even taking the initiative.
Also I want to know how he will face the challenge of finding a winning shot.

Best episode so far....really feels the tension and emotion of this match as well as seeing Ei-chan doing his best even counter-attack Miyagawa by changing his tennis ways. The adaptation was great....next episode will conclude the match and there is a little filer in it.

Ei-chan is completely able to see his weakness and utilize his strength!
Ei-chan disrupting Miyagawa and turning him to becoming the respondent!
Whoever gives up their serves would lose!
That preview looks promising!

I fuckin love this anime!!

Every sports anime should be like this.. just pure technique and passion. No bullshit superpowers, no extremely OP generation of miracles, no immature gloating or forced drama.

Ei-chan has lost so much that it makes it near impossible to predict if he'll lose or win this match!

This has to be one of the best series this season for me. I love the execution of moves and techniques. I hope Ei-chan can hold on and win. Cant wait for the next episode.

Man it's so fun seeing Eichiro improving this much :D

The way he realized his weak point and what's going on then started to change the pace of the game was awesome.

I really hope he can at least beat the 3rd round this time. He deserves it >.<

This episode was absolutely grand. I was gripped through the entire match between Ei-chan and Miyagawa. That had to be one of the most intriguing episodes of all and it was intense all the way through to the end which left me wanting next week to come. It's surprising this series has been executed so well that I'm looking forward to it more and more each week.

Wow, my heart was beating fast the entire episode. High tension! Loved the mood.

It's good to see Ei-chan putting up a fight. He's really growing throughout his game, learning, making mistakes and gaining experience. I'm guessing Ei-chan will adopt a serve and volley style of play. I think it suits him.

Nice to see Ei-chan committing himself as well. Crying over his losses (frustration) and his dedicationg is quite inspiring. I like his opponent as well, but I'm really rooting for Ei-chan. I want to see him victorious, doing that "YESS!!!" with a fist pump, maybe even a few happy tears. :D

Fun episode that also fell on the same day has the French Open final!

It's a close match! Ei-chan will have to change it up on the next game if he wants to break...

The only thing that bugs me, is Miyagawa. Nobody in their right mind would use two hands on their forehand and backhand. It would severely limit your potential and talent. Though maybe he didn't have a lot of potential so it makes him some what better.

I'm definitely surprised that hasn't been mentioned yet.

The thought of Eii-chan winning this is really tough to imagine. Eii-chan is barley holding his serve. In order to win though, he needs to hold his serve, break Miyagawa's serve somehow, and then hold his serve once more. Regardless, this is really intense and fun to watch! I love how the mental aspect of this game is being displayed too in this anime.

I wonder, will this go to a tiebreak? O.o That'd be pretty neat.

So they are 4 - 4 in the numbers of games won, right?
why did others say that this set will end the game?

Ei-chan is at a disadvantage whenever it's Miyagawa's turn to serve. That's because he doesn't possess a specialty shot yet so all he can do is keep returning Miyagawa's balls. On the other hand Miyagawa has been prolonging the match by "purposely" losing the sets which Ei-chan was serving in order to observe Ei-chan's pattern and determine which of his ground shot works best against Ei-chan.

When the score was 4-3 and it was Ei-chan's turn to serve, the expectation was for Ei-chan to settle the score to 4-4 but if Miyagawa, having learned Ei-chan's game, managed to use the knowledge he got and wins the set the score would be 5-3 and the next set will be his turn to serve (which Ei-chan would surely lose) making it 6-3 and Miyagawa's victory.

The match this episode was really thrilling and exciting to watch. but before that i must mention, when they were talking about how you were pretty much guaranteed to play a seeded player 3rd match, they showed the bracket and on the middle right, there were 2 seeded players who lost on the first round...heh kinda feel bad for those two.

Anyway Eiichirou Needs something to win this match, a winning shot? or will he keep up the volley tactic?

Amidst all of the current World Cup fever dominating the sports
this was a great episode about strategy and Eiichiro's current skill against a seeded player
Yuuki kun trashing him was amusing as always
Winners (un)forced errors were explained in such an understandable way
The point at 4-3 with changing strategy coming from Eiichiro was brilliant and realizing his opponent has tested him long enough to end the match there

Switching to serve and volley was just cool to see, though passes and lobs are more effective in real modern tennis nowadays

Now seeing how eichiro is struggling here, i had to go back to the manga to read eichiro vs miyagawa rd 2. That and the Ide match are probably my favorites of the series. Shame we won't get to them.

I'm with you there -- Ide is probably my favorite character/match after the match currently in scanlation. At least he's shown in the opening. Gives me hope there will be a second season... Baby Steps gets only better after all.

This match is absolutely incredible. I've never seen such wisdom and legitimate strategy come from a sports anime before. This match is intensity personified.

Sorry to be a nerd, but to put this in terms of a competitive "sport" I know well this episode was very comparable to smash. It starts and both players have an advantage(counterpick) and it's their goal to hold their advantage on their serve(counterpick). Takuya knows that it'll be hard to keep up, so instead of challenging Maruo head on and attempting to rush through the matches even on his disadvantage he does a genius move. That move being COLLECTING DATA! You're on the opponents serve(or in smash counterpick) and you have a disadvantage to lose anyways. This is where experimenting works. Takuya collects data on Maruo by experimenting while he has disadvantage, not for the win now, but for the ultimate win later! This is comparable to not rushing to take stocks and win the game, but rather feeling the opponent out to see their options and collect data so you can turn the disadvantage now to an advantage later.

Maruo being a genius spots this out, he understands why he's able to keep it even. It's not because he's lucky or doing especially well, it's because Takuya is collecting data on him! So what does he do? Maruo goes absolutely crazy and changes up what he's been doing completely, invalidating all of the data that Takuya's been collecting and making him regret dropping games to do so. And to counter this Takuya is forced to play out of his gameplan that he's been building up the entire time. Rather than fighting the opponent in an area that you know you can't win in change it completely. "I know I can't beat his ground strokes, but I can win this match!", is advice the Melee player Fly Amanita said after beating Sfat in a crazy comeback. He said he couldn't fix what was going wrong in the moment, so what he did was take out Sfat's advantage resetting the game to an unpredictable even ground.

This match is an intense back and forth with incredible insight on different mental plays and their counters. I LOVE Baby Steps. I left this episode a better competitor. On to the next episode!

Really good episode with a good pace too for this Maruo-Miyagawa match. The way Baby Steps matches go feel really refreshing and breezy to watch compared to a lot of other sports anime which tries to focus more on the hardcore intensity and drama of the matches, this one had some storyline to it but it felt more natural and non-melodramatic compared to a lot of other sports shows. Pretty easy to watch.
