Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!

After dying a laughable and pathetic death on his way back from buying a game, high school student and recluse Kazuma Satou finds himself sitting before a beautiful but obnoxious goddess named Aqua. She provides the NEET with two options: continue on to heaven or reincarnate in every gamer's dream—a real fantasy world! Choosing to start a new life, Kazuma is quickly tasked with defeating a Demon King who is terrorizing villages. But before he goes, he can choose one item of any kind to aid him in his quest, and the future hero selects Aqua. But Kazuma has made a grave mistake—Aqua is completely useless!

Unfortunately, their troubles don't end here; it turns out that living in such a world is far different from how it plays out in a game. Instead of going on a thrilling adventure, the duo must first work to pay for their living expenses. Indeed, their misfortunes have only just begun!

An actual comedy, not just "anime funny". 9/10

TL:DR; The first few episodes have A LOT of screaming (why it's a 9 instead of 10 honestly) - get past that and you're in for a treat. I would describe this as the degenerate Looney Toons world of anime. Jokes have depth, characters grow, and there is a bigger cast than most mainline anime, AND they actually have a role in the story and are reused for future bits.


Full Review:
Let's get this out of the way now - those complaining that this is too fan-servicey have clearly not watched anime enough. For being flagged as a harem, ... it is definitely on the tame side. There's no creepy degin subtext about him wanting to be with his sister or having slave girls. This is wholesome, dumb fun, and I insist you challenge me on that.

Now onto the meat of this. What do you think of when you think of "comedy anime"? A bunch of panty shots, people getting slapped on the head, and either a comedy of errors or "omg so random". It's exceedingly rare to find a comedy that transcends culture and genre - and that's Konosuba. If you're looking for "anime funny", you'll probably hate this series.

Each character plays a role in the story and for a "bit". Characters aren't introduced just for the sake of a single moment, and that's why later seasons are even better than the last. So much so that the series improves with a rewatch, as you will suddenly be in on jokes you totally missed the first watch.

Truly, this gets better the more you watch. That in itself is a rarity in any medium.

Mixed Feelings

Konosuba is a silly comedy isekai, we follow Kasuma, a NEET loser who dies in the dumbest of ways, since he had a sad, shallow life he's allowed to reincarnate in a new world with a huge advantage to help him defeat the demon lord and his generals.

The animation is generally fine, although there's moments where you can notice a really sloppy job, but other scenes look like the entire budget went there. The characters are again generally fine, Aqua the goddess is very flawed: she's lazy, egocentric and cowardly, this along with her innate power makes her very interesting, same for Megumin who captures ... a girl adolescent quite well: Strong-willed, innocent, stubborn and playful, this along with her obsession with explosion magic makes her the best character in my opinion, she's relatable, well-written and powerful but with drawbacks. Our MC Kasuma is very perverted and self-centered but in the end he never abandons his allies, his schemes are also very entertaining.

Where it falls off is with Darkness, she's just a blank slate with no personality other than being obsessed with the idea of being raped and tortured, when she's on-screen everything revolves around how she's rabidly and uncontrollably salivating to the idea of being taken advantage of in the most creatively disgusting ways, it gets old really quickly. The surrounding secondary cast is somewhat interesting but filled with "unimportant girl with huge bouncing tits" types.

The pacing is odd, I feel like we're not seeing big chunks of the original story, we get developments like new characters introduced along with big story dumps, overall sometimes things feel rushed, but the story is able to maintain a constant stream of jokes and an entertaining plot, the story is this anime's strongest suit I would say, still very basic. The comedy is not the best, it usually revolves around fanservice, this is also one of those animes that insist on giving the audience creepshots up girl's skirts and chests, this includes girls that look very underage...

I really liked the cute, peaceful intros and songs with soft pretty visuals and a lovely sound design.
Even with all my criticisms I found this show funny with a mostly charming cast, but after seeing more, I can confidently say it doesn't get better than this.

I'm gonna be honest with you, I stayed away from this anime after seeing the Sylvia and orc girls scenes on Twitter. Only later to find out that it was from one of the movies, not the show. So I forced myself to watch the show. Normally, I would stay away from these types of anime since they're mainly uninteresting and use tropes I hate, but I decided to make an exception to see if my hatred for this show was justified or not. After watching this season, I can say with full confidence, my hatred for this anime is valid. However, while I do ... find a lot of it insufferable and unfunny, I will admit that, as a satire, it does a fine job, some of the jokes are funny even though I didn't laugh, and the chemistry between Kazuma and Megumin was cute. Besides that, I still don't like it and have no plans on re-visiting it. I'm just glad to be finished and to get all this out of my system.
