Naruto

Moments before Naruto Uzumaki's birth, a huge demon known as the Nine-Tailed Fox attacked Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village, and wreaked havoc. In order to put an end to the demon's rampage, the leader of the village, the Fourth Hokage, sacrificed his life and sealed the monstrous beast inside the newborn Naruto.

In the present, Naruto is a hyperactive and knuckle-headed ninja growing up within Konohagakure. Shunned because of the demon inside him, Naruto struggles to find his place in the village. His one burning desire to become the Hokage and be acknowledged by the villagers who despite him. However, while his goal leads him to unbreakable bonds with lifelong friends, it also lands him in the crosshairs of many deadly foes.

One of the most classic shounen anime of all-time; But this review in particular will focus on the childhood adventures of Naruto Uzumaki and how he navigated his journey on becoming stronger as a ninja. It's a long ride of an anime compared to today's standard but I do recommend it as a starter anime to watch.

Animation (6.5/10) - It is good for its time in the earl 2000s. But its quality is really showing of its age that it was something published a long time ago. As a casual, it wouldn't be too obtrusive with our viewing experience but there are compilations online showing ... that in a closer look, the show at times cheaped itself out lol. But still majority of the battle scenes especially were decent so props onto it.

Storyline (7.5/10) - I think its major arcs were really good and can hook you up easily. But the thing about Naruto in general is, they have dragging filler episodes. Sometimes its just by an episode, sometimes a whole bulk of it which I think was one of the things that really shaved off some points to this ranking. But still, their main story is enjoyable and really a distinguishable build-up for a greater progression in their series' future.

Soundtrack (8.5/10) - Naruto has one of the catchiest and versatile music library I've ever heard on. From the OSTs, sound effects, background music and so. They are really enjoyable and memorable to listen to both inside and outside of the show's context. It ranges from Rock, Traditional Japan, a bit of Japanese Pop and so on. Couldn't complain.

Mixed Feelings

In a lot of ways, Naruto is better than its sequel, Shipuuden. The power levels are tame so there is less of "throw explosive lasers at each other until one side wins." Naruto is also characterized in a more interesting way than his Shipuuden version. He's a cheeky prankster which makes for an entertaining and endearing main character. I know that he had to grow up, but that's just a shame.

Despite being a fan of the series, partly through nostalgia and partly through appreciation, I think some parts don't stand the test of time. The animation in most of the show hasn't aged well. It's ... inconsistent and even feels choppy at some points. There's also the aspect of people staring at each other for too long, padding the runtime. The yapping is cheesy a lot of the time. The villains aren't characterized in an interesting way (in this part at least). Also, the bulk of the story doesn't happen here, making this a really long introduction.

Obvious advice: Don't watch the filler. If there's anything that can cut down the staring and filler, go for it. It's very cheesy and old, but it's also unique and memorable.

Ah, Naruto! The legendary anime promised us not to see ninjas, instead it showed us supernatural youngsters who shouted their attacks at the top of their lungs - because of course stealth is overrated. The hero Uzumaki Naruto starts off by latching onto the stomach of the evil nine-tailed fox. Instead of being a dark, dead ninja, he spent his time destroying Stoneface and shouting "I want to be Hokage!" As if his name would fall on him if he pissed off his legs.

But hey, Naruto has a special quality: he doesn't get discouraged, just like he doesn't have the ability to think easily. ... His life motto is actually "my family is dead, so I get a free pass to be a jerk to everyone". It's called the Sharingan. By the way, if he's a little creative, he can solve 90% of your blindness problems. But no, Sasuke chooses to throw himself at people with names like "Madara" and "Orochimaru" as if being the last member of his clan wasn't enough.

His entire character arc can be summed up as him yelling "Sasuke-kun" as if he were auditioning for a soap opera. His main ability in most of the anime is to distract enemies while Naruto and Sasuke show up. But don't worry, in Shippuden they gave him super strength because if you can't help yourself you can at least smash things.

It's like Disney auditioning in Evil Stepmother. His obsession with young people's bodies (which is very creepy by the way) and his snake-themed attacks make you wonder if he knows what he's capable of. Don't even get me started on the ninja system: death tests for children, job postings that have to be done by the elite, and a bunch of adults who can't feel like they own this system.

There's a demon inside him. Solve their problems. Realize that the entire anime is mad at Naruto for chasing Sasuke because Naruto thinks revenge and freedom are better than being with a dark-skinned guy and a girl who doesn't know that she wants something evil. After hundreds of times and thousands of ninja videos, the lesson seems to be: "If you are disappointed and it's not enough, even the highest thoughts will be yours. Friends."

Simple and short, Naruto is like that tasteless food that you know is bad for your health but can't eat. With all the noise, endless flashbacks, and incredibly long lists, there's something fascinating about it. Or maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome after a series of events.
