So far, it has been terrible. There is no character or feeling to anything really. The animation is boring. The art style is lackluster. The setting is cliche. The main character constantly has a dull expression on his face and most of the show (so far) has been him having internal monologues. The most offensive thing though is that even the anime is impatient with itself. So far it's just been a series of pictures with a narration that summarizes what happened between them. I encourage skimming over boring stuff. In fact, I would skip over it if the show doesn't. But I expect you
...
to reach something after a skip. It's not reasonable to have 4 episodes of skimmed content. Show me something good.
After watching these 4 episodes, I went to the manhwa to see what they're working with and I read the first few chapters. It's strange because in the manhwa, the main character does have a personality. He's not the same dull husk as in the anime. I actually don't mind deviating from source material as long as the result is good. In fact, I think some extent of transformation is necessary because comics and animation have different restrictions as media. For example, because comics use panels, they cannot have entire paragraphs of dialogue/monologue so they cut them up with questions or make them simpler. However, that sounds really stupid when it's animated and voice acted.
The issue here is that they deviated from the manhwa to make it worse. My issue isn't that they deviated. My issue is that it's worse. If they made it better, I would be happy. But they didn't. We'll see if the anime gets better later on.

Many people draw or try to draw deeper meanings from this show, but I was never able to do that. I just kind of take it at face value. Although I will admit, when I listen to people explain their takes they do sound like well informed takes. I just lack the knowledge to understand these things. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it for what it is at face value.
Three teenagers get put through the wringer as humanity tries to survive an alien invasion. They struggle not only with their missions, but also their motivations (especially Shinji), interpersonal relationships and daily life. It was very fun watching
...
it for what it is. Although the animation isn't anything to write home about, it's very good at drawing and coloring its scenes. The way it sets things up is what made this show so enjoyable to watch. There's always something you want to know or something you want to see.
However, my favorite thing about the show is that as you near the end, there's this sense of loneliness that starts to overcome the tone. Everything slows down, becomes quieter, yet more desperate. It's a very strange tonal shift, but a very welcome one. As for the last episodes, I skimmed through them because I didn't want to watch a psychology seminar.
Very fun to watch and very unique.

Season 2 carried over all the downsides of the first season but not all of the upsides. The setting and premise are still nice. It's still entertaining. However, it's still very clear that the show isn't very good at setting up interesting mystery plots or making the world coherent. In the first season, that was covered up by the fact that there was a lot of buildup still happening. This leads you to ignore questions like "Is chocolate really a powerful aphrodisiac?" and how a lot of things get simplified and stripped off any nuance.
Season 2 brings the show's faults to full display. A lot
...
of the mysteries are really obvious. The villains are obviously villains not because of any deduction on my part, but because of the very obvious way they introduce these characters. They shine the spotlight on characters the story has no reason to care about. There's no alibi or justification to why they warrant screentime, so you're left with no choice but to recognize that they must be future villains.
A lot of the revealed "secrets" are something that should have been obvious to Maomao an entire season ago. The show revolves around her doing these elaborate deductions. But when it comes to very obvious facts, she acts completely oblivious and devoid of any thought.
The second season is very obsessed with "tell don't show." They don't want to show you Gyokoyuo's willpower, they really need Maomao to have an internal monologue about "Wow so this is what it means to be a high ranking consort wow shes so strong." The internal monologuing in general is just off the charts in the second season.
The first season suffered from Maomao being able to do everything. However, at least there seemed to be an attempt to tie this all back to "Maomao knows a lot about poison and medicine." The second season completely gives up and makes Maomao a detective for everything. Not only is she a poison expert, but also an expert on mirror manufacturing, construction, color blindness, politics, history, etc. It feels like the writers are just aching to give up on their setting and do a crappy modern detective story.

Mind numbingly boring. Recently there have been only two types of fantasy anime. The ones who actually want to tell a story, and the ones that want to tell you one of the three template stories with different hair colors on the girls. This is the latter. I left my party of comical mustache twirling assholes but I am secretly the best and now Im surrounded by a harem of girls. Then on the side there's a fantasy story that isn't well developed and you don't give a shit about anyways. Reviewing this doesn't even feel like Im reviewing this specific anime, it feels like
...
I'm reviewing 20 anime that are identical.
The dialogue feels like an AI summarized how isekai/fantasy interactions usually go. The character design feels like it was made in 5 minutes with premade anime assets. The animation isn't the worst I've seen but it sure isn't anywhere close to good. The cast doesn't exhibit much personality or show any feelings. They just say things like "We will fight this together" and other boring staple phrases.
The problem with these shows is that they are clearly written by people who copy each other, so they keep building on each others' ideas until they lose track of what the original concept was supposed to be. In other words, you're watching a copy of a copy of a copy of etc. until it's so far removed from what it's supposed to be copying that it doesn't make sense anymore. For example, having an "Adventurer's Guild" isn't even necessary for a fantasy story. Hell, it doesn't even make sense in this one nor in the other countless anime that follow this template. Off the top of my head, I could say that Mushoku Tensei, Frieren, Eminence in Shadow and countless other anime managed to do a fantasy story without this stupid "adventurers guild > fight dungeons" template.
This pattern extends everywhere. The guild exists because other slop has the guild. The dungeons exist because other slop has dungeons.
If I want to be charitable, I would say it's good that this anime doesn't have as much stupid, unjustified fanservice. But it's always trying to also be that. Such as when their party camps outside, instead of sleeping around the campfire or away from each other, they line up and put the MC in the middle of 4 girls. That or some random quips by some of the characters teasing some sort of crush which you don't even see develop in the show. It's really stupid and robotic. But I guess the other slop has harems so they half-assedly tried to match that as well.

Very over the top and very edgy. But for the first time, that kind of anime exaggeration feels like an upside. It also has my favorite quote in all of anime. "The only promise a man doesn't break, is a promise he makes to himself." This perfectly describes Lelouch.
In a horrifying world where Britain continues to colonize most of the modern world. Lelouch, an exiled prince, swears to exact revenge on his father. He leads two lives, one as a British noble studying at a school in Japan. The other is an enigmatic leader of a Japanese resistance group.
Code Geass is interesting because you can
...
view it as many stories in one. Most are good, but some are bad. The most obvious one is the overarching plot of the fictional Japanese resistance against the British empire, with all its politics, strategy and plotting. But there's the substory of every character individually. Furthermore, there's also the story of the relationships between all these characters.
The most interesting nexus of all these stories is the main character, Lelouch. An intelligent, narcissistic and cutthroat teenager with a newfound strange superpower. His personal story has been an absolute treat to watch. Not to mention, the show does a tremendous job of taking into account his personality + motives and translating that into how he treats others.
There are some bad aspects of the show, but they're mostly on par with usual anime faults. The most annoying one is that the school life aspect of the show is incredibly boring. The least interesting characters are the ones from the school (not counting the ones that exist outside the school too). There's also some random fanservice. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's kind of shocking how explicit it is. The fact that it's a mecha anime is also a downside for me because mecha fights are kind of boring.

The summary is that it's a massive, incoherent mess that doesn't have any proper direction. Things happen completely out of left field. To add insult to injury, some things are also left completely unresolved. There's some random incest and fanservice thrown in for some reason. The romance is also completely out of left field where the MC becomes a couple all of a sudden. It is also written so horribly that you're left to wonder why they even bothered.
The sad thing is that the main plot actually did have some potential. I'm a sucker for these stupid plots where the protagonist wins through an unconventional
...
skill or power against all odds. The most surprising thing is that the show sets up the premise amazingly. Usually, other shows struggle with making the unconventional power feel unconventional. For example, Asta's anti-magic in Black Clover gets overtuned. Other shows had a similar problem where the MC's unconventional power doesn't seem like it should go unrecognized in his/her world.
Chivalry of a Failed Knight doesn't suffer from this issue, the MC's abilities DO feel unconventional and unorthodox. It does make sense why they wouldn't be recognized. However, it also makes sense how he wins his battles. Chivalry of a Failed Knight sets up a very good potential story about hard work and perseverance. It's sad that everything besides the main premise is so horribly written though.

I'm not sure if the anime is this bad or if I'm experiencing whiplash because I watched 3 amazing movies in a row. Sadly, I think it's the former. Slime 300 is categorized as a slice of life out of necessity. It's too unfunny to be a comedy. There's no conflict, no drama, no plot so there's no chance of it being anything else. I hate calling it a slice of life too because in reality, it's a slice of nothing.
The protagonist is immortal, the strongest, loved by everyone. She doesn't do much, doesn't want to and doesn't have to. The show isn't suspenseful, complex,
...
funny nor entertaining. You get to watch an assortment of anime girls do really boring and uninteresting things for 12 episodes. Each one of them feels like it lasts forever because NOTHING of note happens.
I know that in slice of life, nothing important happens either. But that's not what I mean. I actually do enjoy slice of life when done well. However, slice of life anime usually has unimportant but entertaining events. I don't want them to save the world, but I want them to do something I care about. Sadly, I cared about nothing here.
If you wanna watch anime girls do really boring things, go ahead. Otherwise, skip this.

My re-watch was definitely better than my initial watch. Noragami has a weird but interesting concept. It follows a minor Japanese deity, Yato, who tries to become popular and get his own massive shrine. He does all sorts of odd jobs to try and become popular. It's pretty enjoyable overall, but has a couple of weird downsides.
The first is that Noragami's humor doesn't land around 90% of the time, which gets annoying because actual storytelling will sometimes get interrupted by an unfunny gag complete with all the anime cartoony facial features. The second is that it's a superpower anime with a really weird power system.
...
The deities can't actually do anything by themselves, but they turn human souls into weapons and fight using them. It keeps getting more and more convoluted with the instruments gaining more and more hyperspecific abilities, all the while you're wondering why the deity seems to be just a normal person.
Its biggest upside is that the main characters are interesting and do interesting things. Yato takes the cake because he's lived many centuries, but he still acts very casual. His age and maturity still manage to slip through anyways because of his very jaded, pragmatic outlook on many things. Both its opening themes are amazing as well.
As for the rest, it's above par. The artstyle is good, but it's nothing too special. The story is there. It's coherent and it's enjoyable. There's not much to say really.

A lot of romcoms rely on an annoying, infinite tease to keep you interested. This one is no exception. I normally don't mind the infinite teasing. However, I expect there to be something else. For example, Tanaka-kun is Listless teases the romance aspect till the very end. However, the rest of the show is very entertaining even without the romance, which makes you care less about it. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. has a romance plot you know wouldn't go anywhere, but the show is funny without it and the romance plot is yet another instrument for the comedy. I can name other examples.
In
...
this anime, there is nothing else. It's just the tease. There isn't much comedy, there is no good story, there's no good romance, it's just the tease. When you look at the manga, the tease is still ongoing. It's going to be stretched out for as long as it generates income. I do have some responsibility though because I saw the "Romance" and "Shonen" tags and I deluded myself into thinking this will have substance.
The story is as follows: Mona tries to seduce Kuroiwa --> Kuroiwa tries to clear his mind because he's a monk in training --> Mona thinks he is unaffected/angry. Rinse and repeat forever.

The show starts off all fanservice and no substance. You have seen this formula a billion times already. Last year it was the Cafe Terrace show, now it's Tying the Knot With an Amagami Sister (from now on called Knot). It follows the usual formula of "guy who is kind of cold gets surrounded by girls and eventually has to choose a love interest. But don't worry deep inside he is kind but just puts up a front. Also he always accidentally gropes them or sees them naked." Completely typical.
Knot's issue is that it wants to have it both ways. It wants to give you
...
mind-numbing fan service with really shallow character tropes, but for some reason it also wants to tell a serious story. The serious story, however, is completely uninteresting. So it's just overt fanservice interrupted by long stretches of really boring storytelling. Even if you're watching this for the fanservice, it will be ruined by the shitty storytelling that seems to last ages.
