The story line involves the idea that you enter a world that is a virtual reality. They have similar art styles and the game play for the characters is different, but the real world repercussions are more drastic in one series then in the other, but they are still there.

A great story, characters, and a very nice ending. It's also about a guy who fights in "another world".

Anti-social in the real world but a pro in the virtual realm, both series' main male protagonist makes a name of themselves in their perspective series. Both series adapts sci-fiction themes with a virtual world setting. And in that world, there are wonders that defies the laws of nature. Although the main male protagonists' personalities contrasts a bit from each other, their spirit of fighting have a similar taste. They are also joined by companions including a main female protagonist with elite skills of her own. I recommend both series for fans of gaming adventure and action packed drama.
report Recommended by Stark700
A rather odd recommendation due to major differences in genre, but also maturity in content, there is a certain appeal regarding the characters which both series share. The characters aren't cardboard cut-outs of each other though, not in the slightest, nor are the plots. More of, same feel, but something majorly different, if viewers of one might give the other a chance.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
How to best explain the similarity? Dark times in a world where the characters play a game, forfeiting effectively something important in the process, yet they seek to find their humanity. The world outside of the game is light and airy, yet the wishes - the question of whether they are worth it and the price one pays crops up.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
The main setting for both Anime is a school. There are interactive avatars, more prevalent in one Anime then in the other. The main character is looked down upon in the real world because they happen to not have any ability that allows them to succeed in the real world, but once they get to the "game" they end up being important in some regard.

Gaming worlds with fun rules and creative concepts. '.hack//Sign' brings you a game where characters best each other for personal gain or other benefits. 'Accel World' puts effort into both the character development and exciting match modes for extra flavour. Friendship is an integral part of the series where nothing is impossible if you work as a team.
report Recommended by ShanaFlame
The "other world" is a dark Gothic place filled with only a few places of light and bright colors. The "avatars" are other selves representing what one wants to throw away based on their human desires and scars. There is also a lot of action and the characters are in themselves interesting.

While their world settings are different, both Accel World and Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai (Unbreakable Machine-Doll) involves with technology that contain main mysteries. Both series' main female protagonist are capable of fighting in their perspective worlds and also seems to have an affection towards their partner/friend. There is drama, comedy, and romance involved although the responses the main protagonist delivers to their female friend/companion greatly contrasts with each other. Both series also takes place at a school life setting where students learn more than just general academics.
report Recommended by Stark700
The art styles of both Anime contain Gothic elements. The story lines are dark. The main characters are nobodies. Technology is in some manner involved. A game is involved that could leave one completely out of the game for good. Things slowly get revealed over time. They also have interesting casts of characters.

QFT what the previous recommendation writer said. Feel free to hate on the protagonist of Accel World at the beginning for his pathetic attitude & look down on Ikki (Air Gear main protagonist) for his lackluster attitude at the beginning. However, they both will grow and expect their character development from ep 1 to the final ep. Both series are strong.
report Recommended by Ani-Blast
Similarities: Both involves the characters getting in to the game. Both involves a 4 people protagonist. Dissimilarities: One is more of First Person RPG, while the other is sort of a MMORPG. In one anime the character can get out of the game either voluntary or if he/she got beaten in the game, while in the other anime the character is trapped in the game. The female lead in one anime is an 8 year old kid, while the female lead in the other anime is a year older than the MC.
report Recommended by Nasty001
The "worlds" in both Anime share similar elements to them despite having different concepts. There is also the element of getting to come home and becoming a better person by fighting in these worlds to survive and the characters grow in maturity over time.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
.hack is one of the forerunners to the virtual reality genre, but in particular, this short .hack series and Accel World focus on main characters who are misfits of sorts even within the gaming world, yet who end up becoming heroes.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
These stories involve the main characters having online avatars that are used online, only to find themselves negativly effected in the real world by what goes on in these worlds. The themes are also very dark.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
Though these two Sunrise series have greatly different settings, there are many surprisingly recurrent themes: A physically weak male lead who gains the power to create their ideal world. A contract with a mysterious girl with a potential hidden agenda. Strong production values and intelligent action. Most importantly of all, high entertainment value!
report Recommended by HeliosAflame
Mecha, willpower, nice plot, the protagonist is so motivational, the speeches too!! One of the BEST anime out there!
report Recommended by SeraphimGRG
The stories revolve around a game that takes on a bigger meaning then just being a game. Real world friendships are formed and in the long run goals are formed as well. They also deal with digital worlds and getting away from reality, not to mention having abilities that can actually effect the real world in a positive or negative manner.

Rag tag group of friends try to solve problems in another world, but things which appear lighthearted end up not being so. Both the main protagonists end up building up their team of friends over a period of time - but beyond that, snap - spoiler alert.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
Both protagonists are in a way hapless? Hapless means not helpless, but simply unfortunate in their luck. The amount of unfortunate each experiences also ends up balanced out by another character who stands by their side. The journey each go through also isn't straight forward either.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
The world that the characters resides is not only competitive but dangerous. In both series, there is action created by a game-like scenario where the characters gets involved in. Winning is a key factor to ensure bragging rights and survival. However, the adversaries the characters faces in both series often brings forth new challenges to test their skills and abilities. In both series, the characters' age range are also similar but more so are their determination to win/survive in the world that they reside in such a game-like scenario.
report Recommended by Stark700
On the net there is another world, a world that people can dive into. What seems to be a game isn't one like the main characters think and their lives end up being turned upside down. The suspense also builds up.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
Both protagonist are introduced to a game that changes their life forever, a game of battles. The protagonists are forced into scenarios where they are given certain abilities are made to fight against other users of the game. Both series feature themes of hardcore action and survival as the characters do their best to keep themselves in the game. Darwin's Game differs with more deadly stakes were its characters are pitted to kill each other, while Accel World features a more prominent story of character growth as its lead develops to become a powerful figure in and outside the game. Both anime contains sci-fi themes involving the virtual world as well as elements of comedy, action, and romance. Both anime presents a game like setting where avatars are present inside and involved in conflicts. Additionally, the main protagonist forms a bond with the female protagonist. Also, there is a mysterious atmosphere like feeling that goes beyond the walls of the virtual world and the real world.
report Recommended by Stark700
The protagonist, who is far too kind (kinda negative), teams up with someone strong to defeat enemies. Both are male and have a popular female fellow student as a partner who teaches him new things. Accel World and the Holy Grail War are both settings in which the main characters have to fight and win to gain something.

Casshern Sins and Accel world have both characteristics of humans, robots, and fighting. Yet both are completely different in story. Both have robots and fighting in another world-like place, yet Casshern Sins is more of the futuristic apocalyptic type, Accel World is more of the futuristic happy ending type . Accel World has more chicks while Casshern sins is sad and lonely. Either way both animes made me anticipated to see the next episode leaving me wanting more.

Accel World and Overlord are the same genres. Just like Accel World x SAO/ Hack etc. - Both anime focus inside of a mmo rpg game, world. - Both have strong MC's - Both are after something. Both series are fun and keep you on the sit to watch.
report Recommended by StarSlay
Both are action-packed romances in which the male lead swears to protect and serve the female main character. Both female leads are incredibly powerful but often lose control of themselves and it is their respective love interests who keep them in line.

And lastly, Both definitely worth your time to watch!! >.<

Both protagonists face obstacles and depression that hinders them from their happiness and goals. They also have people who help them realize that they can achieve their goals. However, Accel World has way more action and fight scenes and Shitgatsu wa Kimi no Uso has way more emotional impacts.
report Recommended by Soratinite
the same plot where it involves a MC whose life is full of shit, and an opportunity that has arrived in a cyberworld that given them a chance to be somebody. The differences, in Accel World, the plot was more of a sci-fi and cyberpunk, while Mahou Shoujo site has that dark magical girl theme in it.

We have both protagonist who are generic losers who had their precious big metal thing lost and they are sad without it. Now they try their hardest to get back their precious big metal thingy. The male protagonist is also very similar to female loli protagonist in Lance N' Masques. They're short, kawaii ~ and has nice big round faces; making them the most likable/lovable characters you'll meet in anime history.

Games that people can play. The virtual world and the real world are mixing together. The technology of the neuro linker allows people to play an online game- Brain Burst. Which takes place in a virtual realty. Here they compete with one another.

One Piece is the ultimate adventure story whereas Accel World isn't as bold or ambitious with the scope of its world, it does successfully characterize adventure and villains nicely. With regards to style and plot line not much is the same. Although accel world does have similar humor, a funny main character, and is largely about the bonds of friendship overcoming hardships. Accel world develops its characters adequately within a timely manner but always leaves a question about their past to be answered at a later date so that you can be kept questioning, similar to certain situations in One Piece anime and manga.

Not really the look but the feel of the anime. This is what .hack//L.O.T.T should have been more like.

The game's adventures of Accel World, are similar to the Akame ga Kill!'s battles. The shows provide several epic fights, with many cool powers and twists. too. The main girl is almost the same, and the group of heroes has to struggle against many various enemies.
report Recommended by Disillusion
Both have a futuristic "Twenty minutes into the future" style setting that is mainly focused around a interconnected cybernetic world that at first appears to be a video game; but is later shown to be something else that has far more dangerous consequences and potential for abuse in the real world. Both shows also focus on the protagonist's circle of friends as equally as it focuses on him.

Matrix style series and a whole new world on the other side. 'Zegapain' isn't solid in terms of storyline but you are able to connect with a few of the characters and in the beginning, it's pretty much hack and slash in mechs but halfway through the series, more plots will be revealed and the enjoyment would pick up from there. 'Accel World' deviates almost entirely from 'Zegapain' concept except for the fact that the characters are able to go to another world. Romances and battles are what makes this series very delightful to watch. Sure people who dislike the MC at first due to  read more

The style is in a modern Gothic where a lot of shadows are used in contrast to bright colors. The cast of characters are wide ranged and there is a mystery that they are forced to solve. A school setting is involved but the characters do go other places.

The anime deal with the issue of bullying, how people deal with bullying and the characters growing up in the adversities of being bullied. Those who have been bullied may relate.

What does medieval-themed anime has in common with futuristic teenage show? The answer is simple: quality of art. Animation and music fits so well with the proposed setting that you will believe you actually traveled through time, be it forward or backwards.

The concept of fighting in other worlds is similar, with just a small difference. Characters "Wave in" or "Burst Link" themselves to a world that mirrors the real world, while being something completely different that masks their identities while in the other world. Not only is there a similar world concept, but fighting each other is present as well as gaining unique abilities from battling experience or even from each other.
