How to best explain the similarity? Dark times in a world where the characters play a game, forfeiting effectively something important in the process, yet they seek to find their humanity. The world outside of the game is light and airy, yet the wishes - the question of whether they are worth it and the price one pays crops up.

Living normal school life with the addition of virtual reality battles and real-world consequences between the two.
Both anime feature battles that take place in an "alternate reality" that only a select few know about.
People are required to partake and win battles for prizes and to "stay in the game".
If you end up "out of the game" due to losses, you lose all memories related to the game.
Within both anime, feature the main character being thrown into battle before knowing what's going on, and people who try to abuse that early on in the story.
Selector is a darker and more psychological type of story, whereas Accel World is more of a hero fighting and becoming stronger.
Involves a game where you have to do battle and winning grants a reward beyond the usual but losing will erase you from the game forever.
Characters are introduced to a game that aims to reach the ultimate reward of unknowns, but if they lose during the game they lose all knowledge of the game and can't reenter.
Only difference is that WIXOSS is a card game while AW is MMORPG.
