Okazaki Tomoya is a delinquent who finds life dull and believes he'll never amount to anything. Along with his friend Sunohara, he skips school and plans to waste his high school days away.

One day while walking to school, Tomoya passes a young girl muttering quietly to herself. Without warning she exclaims "Anpan!" (a popular Japanese food) which catches Tomoya's attention. He soon discovers the girl's name is Furukawa Nagisa and that she exclaims things she likes in order to motivate herself. Nagisa claims they are now friends, but Tomoya walks away passing the encounter off as nothing.

However, Tomoya finds he is noticing Nagisa more and more around school. Eventually he concedes and befriends her. Tomoya learns Nagisa has been held back a year due to a severe illness and that her dream is to revive the school's drama club. Claiming he has nothing better to do, he decides to help her achieve this goal along with the help of four other girls.

As Tomoya spends more time with the girls, he learns more about them and their problems. As he attempts to help each girl overcome her respective obstacle, he begins to realise life isn't as dull as he once thought.

"Poignant. Compelling. Heartbreaking. Clannad is one of the most cherished anime of all times."

The first time I watched Clannad was back in 2008, and I just finished re-watching it for the 3rd time this past few days. Now I realize that will take years before I watch something that does the same impact on me like this anime did. I was moved by it the first time I watched, and the third as well, but surprisingly in a different way. Throughout all anime history this is one of the most notorious series in the romance/drama genre, not only for the emotional load it carries but read more

Opinions on Clannad seem to be bipolar; you either love it or you hate it. Whilst I feel the rave reviews for this anime are not justly deserved, I also feel it shouldn't garner as much criticism as it does either. For me, this anime is a living example of average.

I want to start positively before I become more critical and the positives that stand out most to me are the sound and the art, so kudos to the studio for that. The characters are well drawn and some of the landscaping, particularly the sunset are very easy on the eye and aesthetically pleasing. The read more

Here's the central problem with Clannad: it wants to tug your heartstrings, so it doesn't think about anything else. Unfortunately for this show, this means that it ends up being utterly contrived, unrealistic, and outright stupid.

This show expects us to believe that teenage girls act like five-year-olds. It expects us to care about these infantile, one-dimensional characters. It expects us to have genuine emotional reactions to the 'blossoming relationships' between our bland protagonist and these excuses for characters.

Is this too harsh? Let's look at the individual components that MAL expects us to rate anime by.

STORY: To be fair, the anime didn't have much to work read more

although alot of people seemed to really enjoy this anime, I thought the story was prettty humdum and faint. The main focus was to touch you emotionaly, but for someone like me (with a lack of emotions) it was just akward to watch the characters struggle with problems nobody really can relate to.

The protagonist (tomoya) was really annoying:due the fact that his father was an alchoholic and lost his job, he didn't have any respect for him. In my opinion, he really exaggerated every problem that came his way. People have to deal with problems like his really often, so he shouldn't act like read more

Anime: Kanon (2006)
The two main characters are very similar in their sarcastic tone. The story surrounds the main male lead's interaction with the girls around him.

Anime: Angel Beats!
Drama has similar fell and has same over the top comedy relieves. Both has great animation and music has been done by same composer.

Anime: Air
Both anime focus on a guy that doesn't know what to do with himself, and instead starts to help a girl fufilling her dreams. Also, the animations are quite alike, as they're both based on a visual novel by Key.

Anime: Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
Both Clannad and Ano Hana are good dramas featuring the development of friendship and a bit of supernatural events.

The main difference between thoso two is that Clannad has a lot more of funny scenes and jokes, while Ano Hana is on the cute side and deeply focused on its long drama.

If you want a soft drama, Clannad is your call. But if you really want the tears to flow, Ano Hana is the choice. They are two sides of the same coin.

Anime: Toradora!
Both are brilliant slice of life high school romcom dramas. It's mainly consisting of comedy (well done comedy) but every so often turn serious and dramatic - pulling heart strings. These can be from issues concerning love or family etc. Both are great watches if you are into romcom high school dramas.

Anime: Little Busters!
-Jun Maeda is the writer of Little Busters! that also wrote Clannad, Air, Angel Beats and parts of Kanon
-Both are adaptions from visual novels created by Key
-Both animes's setting/story goes by an omnibus format, and have small arcs for each heroine that doesn't diverge from the central plot of the story (with the setting intact)
