https://boundingintocomics.com/2020/01/23/several-anime-conventions-announce-new-ban-on-attendees-wearing-ahegao-clothing/

Three different anime conventions have announced new policies specifically banning attendees from wearing ‘Ahegao’ print clothing, citing reasons such as “feedback from staff, attendees, guests, and the industry” and the “social climate” for the ban.

Meanwhile sexy cosplays are still allowed and sexual content is still sold. And, most damning of all, incredibly violent content is treated as absolutely fine.

But funny faces on hoodies are a no-no.

Someone on here once shared with me an insight on how the Japanes otaku community views westerners. They view most westerners as dumb brutes who glorify violence and see anything violent as "adult" and anything cute as for children.

If you still genuinely don't think normies ruin the community, and believe their puritanical bullshit won't go further until the scene is completely infantalized to keep the mainstream happy, then you're either an idiot in denail, or you support these people and are just trying to gaslight the rest of us.

To everyone else, I'd emplore you to not support westernization. Do not sub to CR or Funimation or any other western service. Do not go to the cons listed in the article. Support not the industry, but specific anime that you like, with merchandise imports.

"It's just a silly meme clothing thing dude"

If it's just silly meme clothing, why are these fake fans so up in arms about it? They care enough to ban it from conventions. They will throw you out of an anime convention for wearing a piece of clothing with no violent content or any sexual organs. They are insane and will definitely not stop here. Their goal is infantalize anime.

Damn now we can't identify the true people of culture.

Joking aside the part where they reference the "social climate" as well as "providing a place for all ages to enjoy" just makes me laugh. Next thing you know they'll ban all cosplays that have a sword or gun prop. Wait, didn't some convention already do that some time ago? Oh well we live in a clown world. Hope no other conventions follow this train.

either all sexual content should be banned, or none, you cant pick and choose which sexual content is okay and which isnt. if they ban ahegao hoodies then what about, like you said, sexual cosplays? why only target ahegao hoodies??? ive never heard anyone complaining, most people I know find them funny.

I have a hoodie myself which my ex girlfriend bought me and ive worn it just outside once, loads of people complemented it and said it was funny. then, the people who didn't watch anime couldn't recognise that the face was sexual. I honestly dont understand what the issue is with it... surely there are far worse things you can wear?

I agree with banning them from cons that don't have age restrictions at least. It's illegal to show kids porn so ahegao faces go that category. They aren't also allowed to sell hentai, yaoi or yuri to kids at least where I'm from. What comes to sexy cosplays, not biggest fan myself, but as long as they aren't showing nipple or genitalia it's not that different from going to beach is it.

I mean the "sexy cosplay" is not a valide example here, do people go to conventions with nude cosplay? Did you never go to a beach? There's nothing sexual about it, sexual would be really showing something.
But the rest of the argument I understand.

must be the genre

ahegao = hentai (the kids can google what it is later back in home)
sexy cosplay = ecchi

so hentai is hardcore and not children friendly lol

I don't support banning them, it's just a stupid design and one of the least retarded shit I saw in the one con I decided to attend but let's be honest, the only people wearing this crap are 13yo edgelords who depserately want to prove how cool and edgy they are, I won't really miss them. Still, censorship sucks. I really hate certain shit in conventions but I would never advocate banning them.

You know, not everyone feels comfortable with ahegao hoodies. The vast majority of normies don't know what that is, but these conventions are attended by people who watch anime. The hoodies don't show nothing explicit but let's not act clueless, most people there will know what those faces imply lmao. Some people just don't want that shoved in their faces, it's not that deep.

Most sexual content being sold in convetions it's not showed to you unless you ask for it or the covers (asuming you are talking about dj or R+18 manga) are barely explicit or more subtle about it. That's why people don't bother with that.

I do agree with what you said about the westerns and how some are just extremists and want absolutely everything to be infantalized but I get where they are coming from when talking about the hoodies.

Their only "funny" faces, yeah right...!

Clearly ahegao faces are disturbing and way worse then someone walking around in a skimpy outfit, since ahegao faces literally signifies that the character just had an orgasm and is pleasured out of their mind, so yes, it's very inappropriate and a good choice in banning them!

I’m this close to buying an ahegao hoodie and t-shirt just because of things like this.

I actually don't like those kinds of hoodies myself. But the double standard when it comes to the cosplay and merch sold at conventions is very confusing. They just randomly enforce rules to appease the fake outrage.

Are you seriously comparing wearing a "sexy" outfit with wearing a hood full of orgasmed faces? Do you really think that the equivalent of an ahegao hoodie is a Sailor Moon cosplay?

Uhhh, dealers at conventions need to see ID before they even show you the hentai/yaoi. And you need wristbands to see any hentai or gory anime or panels. And skimpy cosplay isn't in any way comparable since there's nothing inherently sexual about the human body.

Meanwhile anyone, including little kids, can see and smell an ahegao hoodie. Don't matter if it's cropped, you're forcing people to look at porn without their consent. Sonic the Hedgehog inflation diaper fetish art doesn't usually show any genitals, surely it's fine to wear those in public going by your logic?

Totally agree; and I don't mind at all because I always thought ahegao clothing was gross. :/

YUP. Sexy cosplay doesn't count either because it's not public indecency as long as genitalia is covered.

"They view most westerners as dumb brutes who glorify violence and see anything violent as "adult" and anything cute as for children." Well....technically they aren't entirely wrong...

As for the topic, yes it's really stupid and hypocritical to ban a specific type of clothing and still allow revealing costumes. However, to me this isn't something worth getting so worked up about. I mean, if I'm told I have to remove or change one piece of clothing just to get into an event I'll be annoyed and pissed, but in the end I'd do it since it takes so little effort to do. Now, I'll refer quickly to about something that happened to a friend of mine while we were hanging out. I won't give names, but there was an establishment who would not let my friend in simply because he was wearing shorts. Was he annoyed, yes. But he didn't make a big deal about it. Now...this may not be the best example because there's no way he could just take off his shorts, but the core problem is still pretty much the same.

Wow, literally anything is an excuse for piracy these days, isn't it?

If it's just silly meme clothing, why are these fake fans so up in arms about it? They care enough to ban it from conventions. They will throw you out of an anime convention for wearing a piece of clothing with no violent content or any sexual organs. They are insane and will definitely not stop here. Their goal is to infantilize anime.

Have you ever been on a convention staff, or around those who are? I happen to be involved with a convention that's considering an ahegao ban, and while there is support for the ban, there's plenty of concern and dissension from those who want to avoid a "slippery slope" towards banning sexy cosplays or other erotic content. Some oppose the ahegao ban entirely for those reasons. (Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing them gone, but I worry that the time and resources we'd spend enforcing a ban would be a net loss in the end.)

It's all about striking a balance between freedom of expression and making sure the convention space is as comfortable and welcoming as possible, in order to preserve the long-term viability of the event. If we alienate children/teens/families too much, that means an aging attendance base, and consequently, an aging staff that can't keep up with the mental and physical demands of running a convention, meaning the convention breaks down and falls apart. Most staffers that come on board in their 20s are likely those who attended the convention as teenagers and feel they want to contribute more after "maxing out" their enjoyment as a convention attendee. If that personnel pipeline breaks down, it creates a staff that completely ages into their 30s and 40s and is more at risk of being "out of touch" with the fandom, meaning that the attendance base continues to age and contract as congoers lose interest, get too busy with careers/children, or literally die off. (See also: sci-fi conventions.)

Convention staff, for the most part, are all-volunteer, i.e. unpaid, beyond not having to pay for badges and food/lodging costs during the event. While not every convention staffer is a superfan who's seen thousands of anime titles and keeps up with dozens of airing shows every season, we wouldn't be sacrificing our time, talents, and resources to serve a fandom and congoer population we didn't love and respect. Sorry if that conflicts with your narrative of FemiNazi NPC SJW (((boogeymen))) hell-bent on taking away your fun and O-Face hoodies. Though the "insane" part may be true, albeit for different reasons.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.

Normies are already somewhat ruining the anime community. I find it disturbing how many people in the anime community of all places complain about anime girls having squeaky voices or hate on traditionally feminine characters like Orihime from Bleach or Asia Argento from High School DxD.

The very guy who introduced me to anime said he hated those characters "because they are useless." To which I respond... A. Since when the fuck is healing a useless power? And B. Not every character has to be a fucking fighter/warrior, I especially prefer to see female characters in gentle roles such as healing or being the MC's supportive girlfriend.

Never liked ahegao faces. And it's clearly faces from hentai/porn. So I think it's okay to ban people wearing such outfit.

As for sexy cosplayers, I see nothing wrong with them. As long as they don't show nipples or genitalia.

As for adult manga/doujinshis, you can just put artists that sell such stuff in differrent corner or put a warning banner or something on their stand. So people will know that the stand sells adult contents and thus can wither avoid it or approach it.

I'm not a fan of ahegao Faces/Hoodies they are just creepy and cringy not to mention disturbing.
They are associated with hentai as such they are not appropriate for kids and younger anime fans in general.
They are not part of anime culture as much as they are part of hentia culture.
They belong at hentai con if such thing actually exists LoL.
I don't have a problem with sexy cosplayers, since they are not nude and some cosplays are more lewder simply because of the nature of characters being cosplayed like Ryuko Matoi. But then again I'm a cosplayer so I'm kinda biased in that regard.

People don't understand that there are anime & manga that are aimed towards older people as well, not just PG-rated commonly-known shows. This is similar to what happened in the US with South Park when it first started airing; banning merchandise at schools, many complaints from old people and religious organizations, etc, now it's commonly accepted among everyone. Now everything has to be catered towards children nowadays, cause the older folks can't have their fun without exposing more mature material to children. I think parents of the children attending conventions should take more responsibility and either come along, be informed about what's being presented, or check watch what their children are watching, otherwise, they shouldn't let children go to conventions in the first place.

I don't agree with the ban, but let's not downplay it for the typical agenda of being against Westernization, ahegao faces are of women literally mid-fuck.

Also it's straight up moronic to say "conventions are banning a certain type of clothing, that means Crunchyroll and Funimation are involved, don't sub". This seems like you were pissed off about the ban and then wanted to backpack on your distaste for Crunchyroll and Funimation into the topic even if they're less than relevant, it's not like streaming sites are responsible for this. All Western companies aren't suddenly responsible for every single thing another Western company does, nor will they all agree on every single thing, why are people still fearmongering over Westernization?

Yes good point there, parents should take responsability but how are they suppose to make sure their kids literally don't look at people just walking around. This isn't like avoiding the adult section in a comic book shop or putting firewalls in your internet browser you know.

Quite the opposite of thinking we should shield kids from these things. I find that nothing is healthier for a kid's development than hearing strangers use profanity in public, see people wearing inappropriate T-shirts, couples making out in public, and sexual content in movies/TV.

People in the 2000s/early 2010s didn't give a fuck. If you complained about stuff like this, people told you to grow up. But nowadays we're so sensitive and trying to make sure nobody ever has to feel "uncomfortable." The kids who are successfully sheltered from that stuff grow up to be the same insufferable people asking for these bans in the first place.

Yeah we should have the option to just be like,`look kids, this is the natural order of society, get used to it,´instead of shielding everything from them like a bunch of paranoid freaks.Kids are smarter than we give them credit for,and parents should be more open to actually explaining things like this to them rather than expecting them to never find out about this stuff `until they are ready´,even though they eventually will pick up on it on their own anyways.

And also this doesn't even mean banning all lewd stuff, you can easily make sure kids stay away from things like hentai/doujins boof just by having a sign for the parents to get the memo whereas what can you do about people walking around wearing those cringy ass hoodies? Coming from someone who loves his ahegao I won't be missing those hoodies and you guys are just overreacting.

Did you sir just question their right to degeneration? The reversal of cultural and moral development of human being is a BASIC RIGHT! to them. Why would they think of children? Children are objects just like hoodies to them. Not something they will find value in or care for. Check your privilege sir 'mkay?

Lol yes, I guess I should've known better

Those hoodies are stupid and only immature kids wear them.

This becomes a major problem when the ones wearing them are 30+ adults. Personally I would put them on a watch list of the local child protection services.

i was done with anime conventions when the main one i was going to banned lewd content, of course resulting in a huge loss of attendance

What kind of heathen's ban lewd content from anime con's? It's literally part of anime lmao.

idk why anime is SO POPULAR w sjws but it is

So maybe they were just stupid enough to think the few complaints they got were a large representation

You know.. how many companies bow to online outrage

Either way.. they plummeted in attendance lol

Personally i think that's fine to ban them, they are "cum face" hoodies. When you use that phrase, they sound a lot less edgy & cool. Plus they are all of women, so I can completely understand why they are being banned at conventions.

I wouldn't want to see hoodies of guys making the "cum face" when I was out somewhere. They are the definition of cringe for me.

I can understand some people calling this censorship, and it is, but I think it's common sense censorship as I can see how they would offend women. Wear them at home or out, just not at conventions.

It literally makes me cringe inside to hear people say that they think the definition of the anime community is an ahegao (cum face) image on a hoodie, yikes! I love my lewd content, but there's a time & place (yes I know an anime convention is the place to find all sorts of content, but not plastered on clothing so it's full on in peoples' faces. I can see how that would antagonise some women & parents who are worried about the bad influence on their kids).

Would you wear that top in front of your partner, mum or grandparents, or do you squirm at the idea of meeting them wearing a cum face hoodie?

I am sure in some places wearing it outside your basement can get you in trouble with police for "public indecency". Talking about the developed world.

Really, i've never heard that, but it wouldn't surprise me in a country like Saudi Arabia or the Middle East in general.
