Pitch an obscure anime series/film/ova, you think more people should watch.

I think at some point we've all seen an anime we believe is an undiscovered gem.
It's that anime you really enjoyed, but are amazed to see how few people have seen it.

So go ahead and pitch it in this thread, minus spoilers.

I'm classing obscure as 20,000 or less users on this database.

I'll start first with:

Otogi Zoshi - Just over 3000 users.

It's a series that starts in Japan, the Heian Period, 1000+ years ago and has the following.
Samurai, Bandits, Onmyōji Mystics, a not as it seems main character and an interesting mid season twist.

Your turn.....
“I just spent the last two years thinking that you guys knew more than me about life and I just found out that you guys are just as dumb as me.” “Duh-doy.” “Yeah, duh-doy.”

Ooo ok I've got one. I stumbled on it a while back and gave it a shot as it was fairly short.

Chirin no Suzu

Only 2848 users

Don't judge a book by its cover here, it gets surprisingly deep and dark. I'll only talk about the first 5 minutes or so here, but basically a wolf kills a lambs mother, and the lamb sets off to grow stronger so he can challenge his mother's killer, and the only one he sees who can teach him how to survive is the wolf himself.

That one's an awesome movie.

I remember watching it after Love, Chunibyo & other Delusions.
It was interesting to watch a darker, more realistic take on Chunibyo.

Rather than a series, I'm going to focus solely on movies and OVAs in this post.

Happy Birthday: Inochi Kagayaku Toki - Currently has only been completed by 1001 people. It is the most emotional thing I've ever seen.

Circuit Angel: Ketsui no Starting Grid - Currently has only been completed by 372 people. This is a must for those interested in motorcycles, and even though I'm not really that into motorcycles, I still enjoyed it.

Mujigen Hunter Fandora - Currently has only been completed by 464 people. This is a fun space adventure OVA with a hot blue-haired girl in bikini armor. It was created by Go Nagai, and was originally scheduled for North American release roughly 30 years ago, but the release got cancelled due to lack of support/funds. An English dub was made, however it's not available online, and you can only watch it with English fansubs. You'd have to buy the original 3 laserdiscs to get dual audio.

Nozomi Witches - Currently has only been completed by 353 people. The "Eye of the Tiger" ripoff music in the OP is awesome, and this OVA is a lot of fun to watch. The protagonist is literally "One Punch Man" from 1992.

Salamander - Currently has only been completed by 383 people. This OVA is based off the Konami shmup Gradius installment "Salamander," better known to North American audiences as "Life Force."

Soratobu Yuureisen(Flying Phantom Ship/Flying Ghost Ship) - Currently has only been completed by 2615 people. This is an interesting movie, which a young Hayao Miyazaki worked on. It was also supposedly the first Anime ever officially released in the Soviet Union.

I never waste an opportunity to talk about Tentai Senshi Sunred. It's a comedy that spoofs the super sentai genre (power rangers, jiraiya etc).

The main character, Sunred, is a super sentai hero who fights against the evil organization Florsheim, which is trying to conquer the world. The twist is that Sunred is lazy and kind of a jerk, while the monsters from Florsheim are actually really nice, being polite and even doing comunity service. Florsheim's leader, General Vamp, is even BFFs with Sunred's girlfriend, Kayoko, and they have a cooking segment together.

It has short episodes, each divided into small segments, so the story never drags on. The art style is very simplistic, which I think helps a lot with the comedy. At times it's very silly and other times it's actually very sweet and heartwarming. It's the kind fo thing you have to watch to understand. The first three episodes (12 minutes each) give you a good idea of what you're getting into.

Like everything made from Nippon, especially the kids shows.

They are amazing and not many ppl here at MaL have seen them.

Same with alot of Shoujo.

Maria-Sama etc, a later season is really good.
And if I remeber right, the 4th season have been completed 2k times only.

And it shoud be something everyone shoud altleast watch once.

I suppose people are confused by the name what this show is about, magic, voodoo?

Its tags are - Action, Mecha, Military and Sci-Fi.
One the best action titles I have ever seen especially in its second half...and it is only 48 minutes. The plot is thin and derivative but the battles with the robotic prototypes are great.

In terms of anime, I would go with Saber Marionette J (sci-fi harem), those who hunt elves (90s super fun isekai) and Attack no.1 (oldschool sports about badass girls in the 60s-70s)

https://myanimelist.net/anime/1045/Elf_wo_Karu_Mono-tachi
https://myanimelist.net/anime/573/Saber_Marionette_J
https://myanimelist.net/anime/1550/Attack_No1 (fansubs are almost completed)

In terms of manga, I would go with Cestvs (gladiators!), RED (Native americans and the old west) Rokudenashi blues (delinquents!) and Sylphid (Horse racing)

https://myanimelist.net/manga/17233/Kentou_Ankokuden_Cestvs
https://myanimelist.net/manga/12713/Red (scanlations started recently)
https://myanimelist.net/manga/4444/Rokudenashi_Blues (scanlations covered so far 1/2 of the manga)
https://myanimelist.net/manga/16328/Kaze_no_Sylphid

And then, good comedy stuff like "Samurai papa", "Trickster" and "Mizore chan"

https://myanimelist.net/manga/10414/Trickster (super short)

it seems to me that it will or already has become a series, maybe on some streaming service, so it's already popular, possibly, but back in the 90s, few people had heard of the Baki the Grappler OVA and it's awesome.

For an anime that can get a bit cheesy, wierdly over-the-top and even outdated at times, it has much better story and characters than expected. And the comedy is not hilarious, but pleasant, amusing and put in the right places. The matches are sometimes repetitive, but get tense when necesarily, and the training arcs looked borrowed from military camps. And lot of volleyball tossed directly to the girls faces. All for the team. You are probably gonna enjoy it even more than me.

While it doesn't completely abide by your rule of less than 20,000 users, it only has just north of 15,000 completions so I thought I would pitch it. Kemono no Souja Erin is absolutely brilliant. I just recently watched the series and was completely blown away. Erin is easily the most well-developed female protagonist I've ever seen, and made her way into my top 5 characters before I even finished the show.

The story is an epic that spans over 8+ years of her life as she overcomes hardship, loss and discrimination, and it touches on many themes relating to coexistence, personal discovery, and the bravery to stand against the injustice of the laws and codes of the land. It's a shame that many people will avoid the series due to the assumption that it's a kid's show. Tbh it's one of the best stories I've ever seen, anime or not.

White Heart Baekgu

Only 82 ratings but do not be mislead. Series is popular in Korea. It is about the friendship of a girl and a dog, forced to take part in dog fights at some point. I have the region free DVD with English subtitles too. Very good series with its own sensibilities, as good as most anime series with 13 episodes.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/10623/Hayan_Ma-eum_Baeggu

Leafie, a Hen into the Wild

Less than 1000 ratings but this is actually a CGI Korean animated movie with the most profits in the country's cinemas. There is also an English dub but unfortunately they removed some scenes in the finale,so I'd recommend the original with subs. The removal of those scenes took away the whole meaning
, deemed by some as inappropriate for younger Western viewers. It seems other dubs were based on the English version. Very touching childrens movie, based on a popular book.

If you were me:Anima Vision

South Korea faced a very turbulent political climate up till the 90s, where the abuse of human rights was quute common. Country had dictatorship and a hardline conservative democracy for decades. In order to make people more aware of human rights and reconciliation, various directors collaborated and made a series of live action films titled If You Were Me,using drama and satire to point out various social issues in the country. Animation couldnt be left out of the picture,so an animated version was produced. It is available on DVD with English subs. I liked the short Bicycle Trip about the status of immigrants and refugees in the country, by known director Lee Seong-Kang (Yobi, Mari Iyagi) and another short about a father and his baby daughter with special needs.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/10259/Da_Yu_Hai_Tang_Movie - Slightly above 20k members. For a movie comparable to Ghibli films that's criminally low. It has amazing visuals, a beautiful world and a nice story.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/6505/There_She_Is - A short romance with no dialogue iirc. Manages to send a clear message whilst also telling a realistic story all within five 5 minute episodes. Currently at 18k members.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/5226/Souten_Kouro?q=beyond%20the%20hea - I haven't actually watched this yet but it looks interesting and undeserving of such obscurity, only 13k members and 3k completed.

Tokyo Marble Chocolate - an ultra esoteric OVA by the people over at Production IG that delivers in virtually every conceivable department (it's a romantic comedy fyi)

Roujin Z - Fairly well-received by critics and movie-goers alike despite not having performed well at the box office outside of Japan. It also shares the same artistic vision and director as Akira, so if you want to watch something in its exact vein but don't know where to look, look no further as this will more than likely be guaranteed to satisfy that little niche of yours.

Les Misérables: Shoujo Cosette - based on the novel by Victor Hugo which means the story is actually good unlike in most anime. And if you are a fan of Usagi Drop, you'll absolutely love the first half.

This anime is about a futuristic world where there exists a race of people called the Mu (for their special abilities). Obviously , humans fear the unknown and the Mu are no exception. The anime follows the story of Jomy and of Keith who are in two opposing sides or are they two sides of the same coin ?

Don't judge a book by its cover here, it gets surprisingly deep and dark. I'll only talk about the first 5 minutes or so here, but basically a wolf kills a lambs mother, and the lamb sets off to grow stronger so he can challenge his mother's killer, and the only one he sees who can teach him how to survive is the wolf himself.

Tf reading that shit out give me goosebumps 10/10 would watch it

Granted it feels a little childish at the start, like you're watching an old Disney film. But by the end I was completely in to it. I gave it a solid 8/10, it's one I would definitely recommend.

Never noticed Zipang only has so few viewers, I wonder how I even unded up finding it.
Sadly its not a completed story, I guess many unpopular shows will be like this and I absolutely hate getting teased.

Is there a site to filter my completed list by total viewers? Because I really dont know how many views something has.

I know it has more than 20k views, but Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster is a gem which should get more attention. Its a 6 episode short series but it has a more complete plot than shows with 50+ episodes.
Wings of Honneamise could probably also qualify
"This emotion is mine alone.
It is for Madoka alone." - Homura
or how I would descripe Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica.

Sorry this is already the shortlist, I've seen 5k anime :>.

Also it's gonna depend on what you're interested in anyway. I like giving a selection of all kinds of shows so people can just pick whatever sounds interesting to them. I think it's better than me just telling you which ones to pick without even knowing what you're into. All these shows are good at what they're doing so just read their synopsis and see what sounds the most appealing to you.
I probably regret this post by now.

A-Girl

It's a short OVA, just one episode with a little less than 30 minutes in runtime. It tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who is dealing with an abusive relationship and falls in love with her neighbor. There's nothing too out of the standard in this romance, but the execution is so damn brilliant.

Starting with the gimmick of this OVA which is the main reason why I first watched it. It is almost completely (only a couple phrases at the end) silent. It is narrated like old silent movies, with intertitles and various pop songs accompanying the actions and thoughts of the characters. The narrative feels really experimental this way, and it has plenty of creative and evocative visual storytelling. The songs are great in context and blend perfectly with the images, and the shot composition is brilliant and very expressive with some truly amazing highlights.

The story... well, it's nothing too fascinating on premise. And the route the narrative goes is quite arguable and probably controversial. But to be honest I was totally drawn into it, and I accept every one of its decisions. There is something about this, even for a story that is probably too short for its own good, there is... space for the main character to make her decisions and to balance things in her life. Which is honestly amazing in something that tries to tell a rather emotionally complicated journey in less than 30 minutes, and for the most part succeeds at transmitting the gravity of every stage in it.

This little OVA is something else. It feels creative and unconventional, while never giving the impression that it is trying hard and badly to be so. It's wonderfully directed, it's reasonably well-paced and overall very satisfying in its emotional discourse.
