This was an alright episode. Really liked the relaxing mood accompanied by the whistling. It looks like they had some noisy neighbors for a moment. I usually hate when that happens as well.

The hiking at night looked a bit tiring :/

Very hard road to the top, and the main girl is at the limit now. Altitude sickness... The girls who went ahead are in normal condition but can feel lack of oxygen. Two ways to feel better, very helpful.

Hikasa-san's English is not bad, as she told the foreign pair to quiet down. And the foreign guy (even though the seiyuu is not Japanese)'s Japanese is not bad, either.

Agreed. Looks like it will hit Aoi's morale hard, as there at the end it sounded like she was just wanting to quickly go home and sleep in her own bed. Well, hard to think much else when your head is throbbing.

This way pain to watch and Aoi was really suffering during her last part of the climb.
But I like that they did this episode as it shows it's not piece of cake to climb the mountain of this high.
And with lack of sleep or with bad physique one can run into some serious problems (and Aoi had both).
Friends trying to enliven her with no avail, noisy foreigners, feeling of wasted opportunity. This ep got as close to real life as it could get.

In altitude 2500 meters and up, the air is thinner, pressure is lower and amount of oxygen in it decreases. As matter of that, heart beats faster, and lungs needs to hyperventilate to get enough oxygen. Aoi may need to use gas bottle or drink sufficient amount of water to be ok. But I wonder if she would ever able to go all the way up there. But there is a challenge in trying, right?

Altitude sickness can be annoying i heard it happens mostly to people who aren't used to the thin air at high altitudes.
From what i heard chewing bubblegum might decrease the effect of altitude sickness.
And strangely enough i also heard that Viagra helps against it, not sure how exactly it works but it's one of those fun facts that makes me wonder how they discovered it.

I have to say it was pretty busy on they way to the top with Hibiki and Kokona chan, with that much people around climbing Fuji is very safe.

As expected, Aoi drags the team down. Though, I don't really blame her. Mt. Fuji is tough after all.

Good to see Kaede taking the lead and asking Kokona and Hinata go ahead while she looks after Aoi. She's the best!

Since when Kokona is this pro at whistling!? Hinata is just as good though!

Damn those foreigners are loud! I wonder what that guy was asking the girl to do so badly. O.o

That Milky Way view was amazing! Hopefully, they'll see the sunrise together soon too.

I kind of hoped Aoi would really reach the summit but with her past experience in climbing mountains (or lack thereof), I'm not surprised she got overwhelmed. Probably like from level 1 skipping to level 5 or something.

I couldn't help but laugh during this episode because of the foreigners climbing the mountain.

"Remember when that guy asked you to do that thing? And you said no?"
"O-of course I said no!"
"You gotta do it, man!"
"I-I can't do that thing!"
"Come on, you have to"
I don't care what they're talking about but I'd watch a show about those two.

It, depends. Even the same person travel to the same place can get it at once but doesn't get it another time. Various factors decide someone would get it or not. Such as my former boss, he could travel at the Himalayas (5000-6000m) with no signs of altitude sickness every time. I am not as good, I was down twice at about 3200 (once because I didn't sleep well previous night like what Aoi did), but I was fine other times. I've met some Tibetan who stayed at lowland for so long and returned to Tibet to immediately catch altitude sickness. You would never knew before you try.

BTW altitude sickness strikes everyone equally, despite of ages, genders, races and regularly doing sports or not. However, it's less likely to get it for someone climbing up by a car than walking.

The first sign of altitude sickness is dizziness, from mild to severe. You will have much faster heartbeat which can be painful, lose appetite, or want to throw up. Sometimes you felt your body is so light and can't control your legs. Then it can turn into serious headaches. (Not all symptoms will happen every time). When it got very worse, it can become pulmonary oedema or cerebral oedema which kills people. Of course I've never experience something that severe, but every year there is a dozen or two mountain climbers in my country died because of that.

I love the foreigners, nuff said. Their english is really good tho I think they are native... or at least half-japanese, the pronunciation of 'sumimasen' kinda gave off that image.

Felt Aoi there. Hope she doesn't give up. Altitude sickness seems to be much more serious issue than I thought it would be.

Yama no Susume is very relatable to me, not like the average slice of life. I haven't had much experience with mountains, but I've experienced bad altitude sickness once. Also, Aoi's stages of frustration, indecision, disappointment, trying to console herself with something else, and finally wanting to be in her bed instead of a sleeping bag are very familiar to me ;) Most people would be that stubborn after getting their hopes up so much.

Lovin' the conversations the foreigners are having, lmao. The whistling was indeed very relaxing. I wish more animes hummed or whistled to create an atmosphere like that.

... and there's the scrambling bit. And the curse of the concave slope setting in as well.

Her vision's blurring. Sit down, Aoi. Sit down. Now. While you're still in control. The worst thing that can possibly happen is that you fall... That's when the injuries can come. The others aren't exactly helping matters.

If you're not used to being high up, which, let's face it, Aoi isn't, then I guess the altitude sickness affects you more.

And so, Aoi has to stay behind. And Kaede with her. Still, if they can at least get away from the camp it shouldn't be too hard to find somewhere where the sunrise is just as impressive.

There's a long gap between the start of the light and the sun actually rising. Don't worry, girls. You'll be fine.

I got it one time from flying. I brought dramamine but forgot it at home. I got so nauseous, I was throwing up. It was horrible. I had to sit down when we got to the airport before going to the car rental place. The flight attendant even came up to me and asked me if I needed anything. The nausea went away about 30 mins after landing but that night I had the worst headache ever. I thought my head was going to explode. I made sure I had dramamine for the flight back and the difference was night and day. No nausea, no headache, nothing.

I really felt for Aoi in this episode, so sad.

I also really want to know what the foreign gal did. hmmm....

As expected, she couldn't make it :( But there is always a next time. Like Kaede said, the mountain doesn't go anywhere.
I'm not really sure what Aoi expected, after all she doesn't excercise very much, at least she seemingly didn't for the last few years, ever since her accident. She only started climbing a few months ago probably, and even the last one almost made her stop, which wasn't this high :/
Still, I can understand her wanting to go this much.

Well, I knew it wouldn't be as simple as it seemed. It's a shame that Aoi couldn't reach the top but as Kaede - Best Girl - said, the mountain won't go anywhere. There will always be a second chance Aoi!!

P.S.: The emotions Aoi went through were really credible in my opinion. From disappointment to obstinacy and finally sadness. It was very relatable for anyone who couldn't reach a goal after making a great effort.

Well, sometimes you need to stop as well.. Need to know, when to stop.. I mean, even if they wouldn't go to the end this time.. Who cares?.. They can just try again, and again.. Being up in the mountains requires getting used to the air and to atmospheric pressure.. It'd be stupid to continue in the state Aoi is in now.. Yeah, maybe she'll get better after the night.. But if not - fuck it.. It's not like there is higher mountain in Japan they need to hurry to climb anyway now..
The only question is, whether Aoi will get discouraged after this climb or not.. It depends, I guess.. But I'm fine either way.. I don't really see in Aoi too strong passion for mountains.. As well as I see interest in her, if she'll decide to continue climbing.. So I'm fine either way, really.. Whatever Aoi herself will want..

God, that little girl is so tough 😲!

The atmosphere of the mountain was so vivid! I almost felt like being there! It revived the sensations I experienced while climbing mountains myself. While those mountains were not as high as Fuji, the highest summit I climbed was a little over 2500 m.

Now I wonder how I should prepare for a trip to Mount Fuji. If I have the chance to get there, that will certainly be my only chance.

4th and 5th scene where they do stuff with the jackets, both in this one episode! Holy shit!

Also find an anime that literally puts a FLEECE jacket in it.
That credit also goes to Yama no Susume!!

The story itself is of course also written well.
These english-people are really funny actually.
That Aoi didn't made it to the top is a nice little drama point and I like that it turned out this way, so the story can still go on and they didn't reached their main goal so quickly.

All in all a GREAT episode!
