You are correct that the one thing I should have before watching the movie is the first episode of these two series you wrote about.

The number of episodes has to be one of these series for it to make sense. The stories seem to connect to the movie, so I don't think watching anything other than episode 1 will double the fun of the movie.
If you can afford it, I'd suggest you watch Kitaro in the Graveyard and all 6 episodes of the 6th season before you go see the movie.
Personally, I enjoyed it a lot, and I hope you do too!
