THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Holy shit, some of the monsters in this series are more hideous than I had thought.

The fighting felt pretty colorful and ecstatic, almost gave me a Kill la Kill-like feel. Papika is awesome but the beating she took was painful to watch especially since it was against her friend controlled by the mask. Glad Papika made a nice return at the right place at the right time though!

Kokona and Papika make a good team. My favorite episode so far from this series.

Well that sure felt random. Lotsa crazy anime and film references. Star Wars, Mad Max, Dragon Ball, magical girls, etc... perhaps mostly though, for me, Space Dandy what with all the unique worlds. Either way quite the trip. So Yayaka works for the KKK? Trying to keep sense of all this might not even be necessary though, the stunning visual feast is clearly the main draw.

No fucking clue what's going on, but WHATEVER, those fight scenes are sick!

Yayaka and the twins are here and they seem to be with an even more shady bunch (KKK vibes). What the hell is going on?

Holy shit. I'm absolutely in love with this anime based on the aesthetics alone, but it's really bumming me out that it has so far been pretty random and nonsensical. I have a hope boner that maybe it'll all make sense by the end of the show, that would be the best thing ever. If it all amounts to "check out this cool art and animation" that would be kind of disappointing, but at least it'll be entertaining while I watch it!

Finally magical girls transformation, been waiting for this! I really wonder if there's 3DCG involved in this anime.

Not really a mind twisting episode compared to the previous two, but a colorful and lively one fight scenes are lit and more magical girls and boy(?) appeared. I think this will be a KKK-ish vs Flip Flap to take over Pure Illusion. This's getting good.

You can see a tad here and there

If you can't find it on the first watch it's being used correctly.

This show is lit, the Gung ho powered transformations and poses were on point, same with Yayaka and the twins. Bleeds camp, I love it.

If we get a world as fun as this every few episodes I'll be a paid man. The show is far from nonsensical, I feel bad for anyone who's negatively affected by the way the show is strung together. Easily the most entertaining thing I've seen all year.

Man, I really hope it doesn't develop a stupid half-baked plot, instead keep it simple and nothing more than a setup for these fun adventures.

As for the episode itself, this was the most enjoyable one for me so far. It also showed a glimpse of what could be a strong emotional core for this show, Cocona's character and her search for identity and meaning in the world.

The animation and art is great but the story and characters are awful. I will continue watching, but the only redeeming factor is that it is animation porn. The characters are sub par, and the director is terrible at show and tell in how they develop their characters.

Another great episode. It seems that yet another aspect of the parallel world is used to explore sexuality and identity, which is even spelled out towards Cocona and her lack of identity. Add all the sexual metaphors that are ongoing and the kind of identity they are talking about is very clear.

Lots of Mad Max references too.

Its interesting that KKK seems to chant the name of "God of Healing/Truth", I wonder what that is about. Maybe in true KKK fashion they are trying to "cleanse" the world or something?

I'm really interested in how you're interpreting the show then. I mean, I love it, but it really does seem pretty nonsensical at this point (not in a bad way, but in a "literally what the hell is going on" way). If it's far from that, it would imply that you understand everything that's going on right now, no? If the show explains itself before it ends, it will in no way feel random or nonsensical, but as it is right now, I haven't caught any explanation for a lot of things. Some of them I don't really expect to be explained this early on, but the reason that it feels random instead of just not explained yet is the fact that specifically Cocona isn't really questioning it very much. She was reluctant to involve herself at first, but now that she's mostly past that, the fact that she can take everything in stride makes the whole thing feel pretty random. Every episode so far takes place in a totally different setting all contained within Pure Illusion, the existence of which has not been explained, nor has it been explained why there are holes that lead to it in seemingly random places in the real world. Cocona and Papika can turn into super saiyan/magical girls but even though clearly Cocona has never turned into a magical girl before and hasn't been told how or why or that it is possible, she still seems totally comfortable doing that while reciting a line about cutting everything, and she does so with a smile. The anime feels nonsensical because all of these amazing things keep happening and while Papika is perhaps more involved than Cocona (and is just generally more aloof anyway), Cocona is more or less a completely normal girl who was just dragged into this. In fact, her first instinct was to distance herself from Papika and avoid this weird abnormal life that Papika is introducing. It makes sense why she's able to be friends with Papika now, but it does not make sense why she's so accepting of the actual events around and within her. Hence, nonsensical. If a story presents a distinct lack of realism with an attitude of "eh, just roll with it" then it is nonsensical to me, how would I be expected to make sense of something like that?

Now, I feel like Cocona's strange reaction is probably going to be something that gets a lot of attention from the show as it progresses. The (beautifully designed omg) villain/monster girl was mocking her for being so empty of a person (and this emptiness could be a reason for her ability to just take in Papika's aloof nature and just roll with it), and I feel like Cocona's personality will probably be related to whatever themes this anime tries to convey, if any. Or at least I'm really hoping that it does. But I don't think that it's reasonable to say that this show is "far from nonsensical," because it's presenting a lot of wacky worlds with no context to draw from because they're just being thrown into this other dimension suddenly, and in spite of all of the crazy events taking place, soft-spoken and relatively-normal Cocona is still able to return home and have a normal conversation with her grandmother without even hinting at what she's actually going through. I think that Space Dandy is a good example of a show that was similarly nonsensical at first for seemingly being ok with everyone dying somewhat regularly, and then at the very end it stops being nonsensical because they actually explain why all of that is possible.

So to sum up, I hope that it doesn't come across as me trying to start an argument or something, but I do think that the anime is pretty random and nonsensical so far, so I'm interested in how you can make sense of it already.

Still so far it's mostly just laying down the framework. Simple as in being coherent without losing the sense of fun. Maybe wasn't the best choice of words.

No, it's fine.
I see what you mean about Cocona. I think we have different views on the severity of what being nonsensical entails.

I don't think realism or logic comes into it at all, the amount of information we're given is more than enough for the viewer to form a cohesive sequence of events that make up the short narrative of this small world.

You reached the conclusion of the episode and understood how you got to that point. Certainly there's lots of technical/scientific details that aren't explained and probably won't be, but the events are not without reason and are structured in a way that's simple enough to follow.

^^ Errr I think Neromon probably even covered what i was trying to say. I'm not very good at structured rebuttals ;~;

Yeah Neromon kind of cleared things up for me too :P I'm glad that you explained how you prioritize what makes things nonsensical, because I agree with your thoughts there. The episodes themselves aren't being conveyed improperly, like the storytelling isn't bad because I do understand what I've been shown for the most part.

I guess it's just the underlying logic of the world that counts as being coherent or nonsensical to me. I'm able to enjoy the sheer energy and emotion of the anime because it's laid out in a way where I at least understand the events that are taking place, but when I think of the show in general, it just leaves me wanting a little bit more logic so I can fully suspend my disbelief.

Anyway, thanks for replying :) for now I'm just gonna look forward to the new episodes and whatever they may bring.

Man this episode is crazy! I feel like the plot is already there, but it hasn't surfaced all the way. So i'm still kind of like "Wtf this is so random" but in a good way.

It looks like the villains were introduced, and their leader looks like he is apart of the KKK.

I do hope they explain the mechanics of the world, because I'm pretty confused when it comes to the transforming, and other things.

Thrown into planetary orbit by a dark spiderwitchevilthingoflust, then landing directly on said creature? Oh yeah, that's certainly something. A new, surreal world each episode, with a theme and (probably) meaning behind? Ah yes, I'm definitely in for this.

So... Uh, it seems that episode 3 hints towards the fragment thingies being related to sexual/sensual desire/feelings/lust. At least the [wtich] girl was a representative for that, and her and Cocona's behavior during the attempt at fragment stealing quite clearly was.

And in said episode, things got real dark and damnedly interesting.
Cocona being without much of an identity was clearly stated, previously shown through her absence of ability to choose a school to attend.
Also, there appears to be other adventurers - cruel ones too - or might the dark girl have been a native of that surreal world? Hm. She was bored, hinting towards having been there for some time...
Oh my, now even more of dem other guys showed up, finishing off the [witch] and taking its orb of [something mysterious and powerful] - instead of being kind and giving it to our pair. The cult of KKK-like guys appear to be their employers, needing the orbs for something, while the guys our pair are connected with seem to be opposing the cult.

Orbs and fragments. Fragments are found by adventurers, owned by adventurers, wanted by [witches]. Orbs are the cores of [witches], wanted by the cult and hunted by adventurers. Adventurers compete for orbs, it may seem - that trio gave it to the cult, so this seems more like a conflict between factions.

Swapping hair color, and the similarity of their suits, is a great way to signify them being a closely related pair. (the hints at mutual love too, of course) The cult [leader] called them the [something] halves of the [something] Drive (?). Okay, they are definitely important then. And predestined to be.

And, uh, oh my, those that transformation scenes did show some skin, no, shove it into your face. The series in general has had some "fanservice" 'till now, but this episode ramped it up quite a bit. I hope this thing doesn't emphasis their assets much more.

A last note: Please, people, why do you need to connect this with drug-induced hallucinating so often? It dominates too many of the Crunchyroll comments, at least. This is indeed absurd, but there is no need for people to be on drugs or be mentally ill for stuff like this to be thought up. Seriously. And there definitely are clues to what is going on, and quite a lot at that. (I hope this doesn't sound all too disdainful)

I can forgive the crappy characters and lack of a plot as long as they keep giving us interesting worlds and great animation. And I actually like that this show doesn't bother to explain anything or you know...make any sense. Unfettered nonsense can often have the most room to spread it's artistic wings.

Mad Max!!! and the KKK guys remind me of Hellsing Ultimate. So far it seems like there are two competing organizations to obtain that stuff from inside Pure Illusion. And Cocona and Papika are two very special agents with a unique power. Hopefully we find out soon what the stuff they obtain is used for.... This week was much more entertaining than the first two I must say, if only by virtue virtue of being a pure sakuga festival. I'm also glad the show did change its formula and proposed a more busy and action-packed episode, which I believe suits the style of this series a lot better than the more contemplative approach adopted in previous episodes. Pure Illusion really seems like a world that was made to be actively and constantly interacted with, so it's only natural that Cocona and Papika's adventures would become wilder and wilder as the story progresses. I still have no idea where said story is supposed to take us, nor am I particularly invested in our two magical main girls at the moment, but I'm nevertheless eager to see what else the staff (especially the animators) have in store for us.
